BarclaysConnectwithWorkisaninnovativeemployabilityprogrammethat’saimedatindividualswiththeaptitudeandattitudetoentertheworkplace,butwhofacebarrierssuchasalackofqualifications,experienceorconfidence.Theprogrammeconnectsindividualsaged16andoverwithbusinessesthatarerecruitingbutstrugglingtofindskilledandmotivatedindividualsfortheirworkplace.Togetherwithaselectionofcharitypartnerswetrainpeopleinthejob-specificskillsthatbusinessesarelookingforandsupportthemintojobsorapprenticeships.

Atthesametime,nearly40%ofemployerssayalackofskillsisthemainreasontheyareunabletofillentryleveljobs,*whileunemploymentintheUKcostsaround£2.4bninunemploymentbenefits.
Althoughtherearemanyemployabilityprogrammesthatoffergeneralskills,thereareveryfewprogrammesthatofferrealskillstrainingwithactualjobsattheendofit.BarclaysConnectwithWorkhelpstoaddresstheskillsgapandgivesbusinessestheopportunitytodevelopadiverseandskilledworkforce.

Barclayssupportsbusinessestosourcejob-readycandidatesthroughthemilitaryVETSprogramme.VETS(VeteransEmploymentTransitionSupport)findsfull-timeemploymentforex-militarypersonnelofallageswhoareexperiencingbarrierstoenteringwork.Itbringstogetherbusinesses,leadingmilitarycharitiesandtheMinistryofDefencetogiveex-militarypersonnelsupporttotransitionintocivilianlife.Withapproximately12,000personnelleavingHMForceseach
year,businessesthatparticipatewillgainaccesstowell-trained,motivatedandtalentedindividualswithtransferableskills.
VETShasafive-stepmodeltoprovideend-toendtransitionsupporttoex-servicepersonnelandtomakesurebusinessescanaccesstheindividualswiththeskillsneeded.

Whilemanyindividualssuccessfullymakethetransitionfromthearmedforcestocivilianemployment,asignificantnumber
struggletotranslatetheirskillset.Manyareeitherunabletofindmeaningfulemploymentorhaveacceptedjobsthatdon’tmatchtheirexpertise,aspirationsortruepotential.
TheVETSprogrammeunderstandstheresponsibilitywehavetohelpthisvaluedsectionofsociety.Byrecognisingtheextensiveskillsveteransdevelopthroughyearsofmilitaryservice,suchasleadership,integrity,projectmanagementanddealingwithuncertainty,weaimtobringtheseskillstothecommercialworld.

LifeSkillsinspiresmillionsof11–24yearoldstogettheskillstheyneedtomoveforwardinthe21st-centuryworkplaceandoffersworkexperiencefor14–19yearolds.AsoneofthebiggestyouthemployabilityprogrammesintheUK,LifeSkillsworkswithteachers,parentsandbusinessestohelpyoungpeoplebyprovidingfreetools,tipsandworkexperienceopportunitiesthathelpbuildconfidenceandboostemployability.ItalsoprovidessupporttoUKbusinesses–theycanuploadworkexperienceplacementsontheLifeSkillsplatform,whichteachersusetofindtheirstudentsasuitableopportunity.

Withjustunderonemillionyoungpeoplecurrentlyunemployed,progressingfromschooltotheworkplaceismorechallengingthanever.Thisiscompoundedbythefactbusinessesrequirenewstarterstohaveabroadrangeofskillsandanunderstandingoftheworkingenvironmentmanyyoungpeopledon’thave.LifeSkillsofferssupporttobridgethatgap,focusingonworkskills,peopleskillsandmoneyskills.

Followingthecompany’s52%growthin2015,andhavingspokenwithBarclaysabouttheConnectwithWorkprogramme,CEOFaridaGibbsconcludedthatherownbusinesscouldbenefitfromopeningitsdoorstoapprentices.
Barclays,charitypartnerCatch22,andGibbsS3workedtogethertorunanassessmentcentretosearchforpotentialcandidates.Asaresult10screened,trainedandpromisingcandidateswereputforwardforinterviewbyGibbsS3.Faridafoundthistobeaveryeffectiveapproach:“Itwasagreatwaytofindyoungtalentinacollaborativeway.”Twosuccessfulcandidateshavealreadystartedtheirapprenticeships.16-year-oldConnieisafrontofficecoordinatorwhokeepsadminuptodatewhile17-year-oldCamillahasjoinedthedigitalmarketingteamandhasafocusonsocialmedia.Moreapprenticepositionswillbefilledsoonandfurtheropportunitiesarelikelytobecomeavailableasthebusinesscontinuestogrow.
EachapprenticeisreceivingtrainingonthejobandundertakinganNVQcoursealignedtotheirchosenarea,sotheyaregainingqualificationsaswellasexperience.ABarclaysmentorisalsoassignedtoeachyoungperson,providingsupportthroughouttheapprenticeshipperiod.
Faridaisimpressedwiththedynamismtheapprenticeshavebroughttoherbusiness:“Theseyoungpeoplearepassionate,motivatedandwillingtoworkhard.Theywantthisopportunity.”Thebenefitshaveextendedbeyondwhatsheexpected.Shepointsout:“Ithelpstorebalanceyourbusiness.Wehaveseenasignificantdifferenceinhowtheteamsoperate.Theapprenticesareaddingvalueandenergy.”

VETS and ISSHavingworkedwiththeVETSprogrammesinceitsinception,globalfacilityservicesproviderISShasfoundthatparticipationhasprovidedsignificantbusinessbenefits.
Recognisingtheinnateskillsthatex-servicepersonnelbringtothetable,theyhaveevencreatedrolesspecificallyforveterans.TheobjectiveofVETSistosupportthosewhohaveservedus.ISSalreadyemployshundredsofex-militarypersonnelacrossarangeofsectorsandlevels,aswellasasignificantnumberofcurrentreserves.AndtheVETSprogrammegivesthemaccesstoevenmorefromthisvaluabletalentpool.ISSneedspeopletheycanrelyontoensuretheirservicesaredelivered,regardlessofthechallengesthatcomeupalongtheway.Veteransarecomfortableworkingautonomously,arereadilyadaptable,andgoodatthinkingontheirfeet.Allofthishelpsensurethejobisdone.
However,ninetimesoutof10,aveteranwillnothavecommercialexperience.PriortoISS’sinvolvementinVETS,theirrecruitmentprocesseswouldhaveoftenpreventedtheseveteransfrombeingshortlistedforaninterview–despitetheirskillsmakingthemidealcandidates.AspartoftheirworkwithVETS,ISShasnowadapteditsHRpolicytosupportthistransition.
SincejoiningVETS,ISShasbeenuploadingover20management-leveljobstotheVETSwebsiteeveryweek.AllVETSapplicantswhofulfiltheessentialcriteriaonthejobdescriptionreceiveanautomaticinterviewforanyroleinthepublicsideofthebusiness.
Complementingthis,ISShasmentorsacrossthebusinesshelpingveteransseekemploymentaswellasofferingtraining,suchasCVworkshopsandhelpingtoidentifyareasthecandidatemightflourishin.
With75%ofveteransbelievingthatemployersdon’tfullyunderstandtheirtransferrableskills,thepositiveimpactofVETSisobvioustosee.Bothfortheveteransthemselves,andforforward-thinkingbusinesseslikeISS.

Havingattendedaschoolatthebottomoftheeducationleaguetablewheremotivationandaspirationswerelow,hedecidedtofocusondevelopinghisskillsandhelpinghiscommunity.LifeSkillsbecamethefirststepofthisjourney.
WhatappealedtoMohammedaboutLifeSkillswasthat,afterworkinghiswaythroughthecontent,hewasabletoputalltheskillshe’dgainedintopracticethroughaworkplacementwithBarclays.Thisprovedtobevaluable,“LifeSkillshasallowedmetogainvaluablepeopleandinterpersonalskillsandhelpedimprovemyconfidence.”
HehasputhisskillsdevelopedthroughLifeSkillstogooduseeversince.SomuchsothathisworkandachievementswithcharitieshavebeenrecognisedwiththeDianaAward.Plus,beingBradfordbornandbred,hewashonouredtoreceiveaYorkshireChildrenofCourageAward.
Mohammedisnowayouthadvisortothe#iWillCampaign,spreadingthemessageofsocialactionanditsbenefitstoyoungpeople.And,duetohisinspiringsuccesses,hewaschosenasDeputyChairfortheLifeSkillsYouthAdvisoryCouncil,whichhecalls“theapexofmyjourneysofar”.
Throughthisrolehehasbeensharinghisexperienceswithyoungpeople,parentsandbusinesses.“IhopeIcancontinueinspiringthosearoundmethatyoucanachieveanything,regardlessofyourbackground,ifyouworkhardandbelieveinyourself.”
MohammediscurrentlystudyingaccountingandfinanceattheUniversityofWarwickandhasplanstore-launchhisownsocialenterprise.Plushe’shelpingotheryoungpeopletolaunchsocialenterprisesthemselves.Hislong-termaimistobecomeanMP,“EverydayI’mgettingcloserandclosertothegoal.”
