ABOUT THE INSTITUTION
The Coimbatore Institute of Management And Technology (CIMAT) was established in
1996, by Kovai Kalaimagal Educational Trust. The Institute is approved by All India Council for
Technical Education (AICTE), Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), recognized
by UGC under section 12f & 2b of UGC Act and accredited with “A” grade by NAAC.
The institute offers two post-graduate programmes: Business Administration (MBA) and
Computer Applications (MCA). Another primary focus of the institution is offering to Ph. D and
M.Phil programmes in Management and M. Phil programme in Computer Applications. The
programmes are affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. The intake capacity approved
by AICTE for MBA programme is 60 seats till 2007 - 08 and increased to 120 seats from
academic year 2008 – 09 onwards. The intake for MCA programme is 60 seats.
To be effective in the current environment, professional education should provide broad
intellectual understanding of the new paradigm, newer techniques of decision-making with the
support of newer technologies and ability to work in different cultures and environment. Today
the nation needs young and competent professionals who can perform to the expectations of the
changing economy. Keeping this need in mind, CIMAT provides value based higher education
and develops the overall personality of the students by providing opportunity for enhancing
creativity, self-confidence, assertiveness, communication and leadership skills.
Promoting Body
The Kovai Kalaimagal Educational Trust (KKET) was started in 1992 to establish
educational institutions with the motto: ‘Light the Light within’. The trust has, so far, established
Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore Institute of Engineering and
Technology and Coimbatore Institute of Management And Technology at Vellimalaipattinam,
Narasipuram Post, Thondamuthur Via, Coimbatore - 641 109.
Environment
CIMAT is located at Vellimalaipattinam, near Narasipuram, sprawling over a land area of
10.15 acres, surrounded by green hillocks. The campus has a serene and studious atmosphere
with least disturbance and distraction. The students find the environment to be very conducive
for their studies. Facilities in the campus meet their needs for extra / co-curricular activities.

Building
The total built up area of the institute is more than 8937 sq. meters, which is spacious and
could accommodate all facilities to impart quality professional education. There are sufficient
numbers of classrooms, seminar hall, conference rooms, computer labs, library etc.

Objectives
1. To strive for continuous improvement in the quality of its services.
2. To provide the required resources, infrastructure and instructional facilities to meet the
needs of objective 1.
3. To enable continuous up gradation of the knowledge and teaching skills of its faculty
through internal and / or external training programmes.
4. To help the faculty to identify their strength and weakness and facilitate for qualitative
improvement in teaching, and
5. To strengthen the learning resources on ongoing basis to meet the requirements of the
curriculum.
ISO 9001:2008
The institution implemented the Quality Management System and registered for the ISO
certification in the year 2002. In the year 2005 the institution re-registered for further three years
for its Quality Management System. Again in the year 2008 the registration was extended till
2014. During the last several years after implementation of the Quality Management System, not
a single non-conformance was noticed in any of the QMS audit.
HRM Division
The HRM division of the CIMAT organizes Executive Development Programme to cater
to the needs of the industries, at the same time enabling the students to have abundant
opportunities to associate themselves in such consultancy assignments, which will motivate and
inspire them to develop their entrepreneurial and managerial skills and gain a broader
perspective.
Center for Research
A separate division is functioning in CIMAT to promote research efforts. All the
members of faculties of Management and Computer Applications are consultants. The division
undertakes research projects on its own and sponsored by other institutions, government
departments, UGC and AICTE, in topics of current interest. Research proposals are submitted to
the sponsoring agencies and they are implemented. It promotes industry - CIMAT tie-up that

brings the benefits of research to the faculty and students and the expert opinion of the faculty to
the entrepreneurs. Principal directly coordinates this division.
A research circle has been formed at CIMAT. Research scholars (M.Phil & Ph.D) present
their research design and take the guidance of experts and learn from interaction with other
scholars attending the meet.
CIMAT is offering full time and part time Ph.D programmes and M.Phil in Management
and Computer Science of Bharathiar University. So far 22 Ph.D’s are awarded, 23 scholars are
currently pursuing Ph.D in Management discipline and eight scholars are currently pursuing
Ph.D in Computer Science discipline. Ten candidates are awarded M.Phil in Management, six
scholars are pursuing their M.Phil in Management and eleven scholars are awarded M.Phil in
Computer Science and one scholar pursuing M.Phil in Computer Science.

Placement cell
The College has a placement cell, which helps the students in securing placement. It
arranges career-counseling programmes through psychometric tests. These tests bring out the
students strengths, weaknesses and their personal interests and attitude towards various career
options available to them. If needed, it arranges for any follow-up programmes to overcome the
weaknesses. Regular seminars are organized to enhance their career options. The details of

Library
An exclusive and full-fledged Library for MBA and MCA students with on-line
referential access is available. It includes database like DELNET. There are more than 24313
books with 15,344 titles. It has subscribed for 23 magazines, 32 national level journals, 15
international journals, 1520 back volumes and 1,965 CD’s in various disciplines.
Computer Lab
There are three exclusive state-of-the-art Computer Laboratories with Pentium IV
systems and core 2 duo processor. The laboratory-operating environment includes Windows NT,
Unix, Linux, Novel Netware and IIS. Internet facility and latest software like Oracle9i, Java and
Dot Net are available. Totally 225 systems and 5 servers are available in the well-equipped
computer labs. CIMAT Lab is powered with NPTEL. NPTEL program is used to enhance the
quality of education by developing curriculum based video and web courses. Each course
contains materials that can be covered in depth in 40 or more lecture hours. In addition, 110
courses have been developed in video format, with each course comprising of approximately 40
or more one-hour lectures.
Hostel
The institution is having well-furnished hostel rooms separately for boys and girls within
the campus. The boys hostel can accommodate 300 students and girls hostel can accommodate
250 students.

India Management Association in collaboration with IMRB, New Delhi. Thereafter the

CURRICULUM DESIGN AND STRUCTURE
(Effective from 2016 -17)
1.Introduction
The Coimbatore Institute of Management And Technology (CIMAT) was established in
1996, by Kovai Kalaimagal Educational Trust, a well-known Charitable Trust in Coimbatore.
The institute is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recognized by
UGC under Section 2f &12b of UGC Act and affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore It
is an ISO 9001:2000 certified institution.
The institute exclusively offers post-graduate programmes in Business Administration
(MBA) and in Computer Applications (MCA). The Institute was given autonomous status by
UGC and Bharathiar University from the academic year 2010-2011. CIMAT also offers PhD /
M.Phil programmes in management and M.Phil programmes in Computer applications. A
separate division the center for Research is functioning in CIMAT to promote research efforts.
The Center undertakes research projects on its own and sponsored by other institutions,
government departments, U.G.C and AICTE, in topics of current interest. Research proposals are
submitted to the sponsoring agencies and they are implemented as per the memorandum of
understanding. It promotes industry - CIMAT tie-up that brings the benefits of research to the

The Institution is having complete infrastructural facilities to impart quality education
with a state of the art library with ample reference material covering wide topics and computer
lab with latest systems. The laboratory-operating environment includes Windows 2003,
Windows NT, Unix, Linux, Novel Netware and IIS, Internet facility and latest software’s like
Oracle9i, Java and Dot net are available. A separate communication cell is established to
improve the communication skill of students. An association of Management studies –Horizon
and an association of Computer Applications – Netzone organizes various activities to develop

managerial ,technical and leadership qualities of the students .Apart from the association various
club like Finance Club ,Marketing Club ,HR Club ,Marketing Club ,Information Technology
club organizes special programmes for the development of knowledge and skillsets of the
students in their special area.
The Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) of CIMAT which is sponsored by
Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi aims to
promote and implement programmes for building curriculum and training personal and assisting
trainers by exploring their entrepreneurial aptitude and apply their conceptual knowledge in
developing business plans in entrepreneurial activities.

1.3 Quality Policy

1.4 Teaching Methods
The methods of teaching include conventional teaching methods like class room lectures,
seminars, conferences, assignments, case analysis, role play and non-conventional teaching
methods which include the utilization of audio-visual aids, book review program, class debates,
quiz, news upbeat, online test ,technical quiz , management games, computer aided simulation
games, industrial visits, field surveys, interaction with executives , corporate dossier, association
activities, expose students to current issues and latest developments in various fields.
2. Regulations
This regulation is effective from the academic year 2016 -17.
2.1 Eligibility for Admission
A candidate who has passed any degree of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore or an
examination accepted by the University as equivalent thereto shall be eligible for
admission to the Master of Business Administration (MBA).
2.2 Duration and Course of Study
Two Academic years with four semesters, the duration of the first and third Semesters-
July to November and the second and the fourth Semesters- December to April. The
duration of each semester is 90 working days with 5 hours a day.
2.3 The Medium of Instruction and Examinations
The medium of instruction and examinations shall be English.
2.4 Requirements for Attendance

a) A candidate will be permitted to take the examination for any semester, if he/she
secures not less than 75% of attendance out of the 90 working days during the
semester.
b) A candidate who has secured attendance less than 75% but 65% and above shall
apply with the prescribed fee for the condonation of lack of attendance. On the
recommendation of the Principal, he will be permitted to take up the examination.
c) A candidate who has secured attendance less than 65% but 55% and above in any
semester, has to compensate the shortage of attendance in the subsequent semester
besides, earning the required percentage of attendance in that semester and take the
examination of both the semester papers together at the end of the latter semester.
d) A candidate who has secured less than 55% of attendance in any semester will not be
permitted to take the regular examinations and to continue the study in the
subsequent semester. He/she has to re-do the course by rejoining in the semester in
which the attendance is less than 55%.
e) A candidate who has secured less than 65% of attendance in the final semester has to
compensate his / her attendance shortage in a manner to be decided by the Head of
the Department concerned after rejoining the course.
2.5 Restriction to take the Examinations
a) Any candidate having arrear paper(s) shall have the option to take the examinations
in any arrear paper(s) along with the subsequent regular semester papers.
b) Candidates who fail in any of the papers shall pass the paper(s) concerned within
five years from the date of admission to the said course. If they fail to do so, they
shall take the examination in the revised text / syllabus, if any, prescribed for the
immediate next batch of candidates. If there is no change in the text / syllabus they
shall take the examination in that paper with the syllabus in vogue, until there is a
change in the text or syllabus.
In the event of removal of that paper consequent to the change of regulations and /
or curriculum after a five year period, the candidates shall have to take up on equivalent

paper in the revised syllabus as suggested by the chairman and fulfill the requirements as
per regulations/curriculum for the award of the degree.
2.6 The Evaluation System
The major objective of the institution’s evaluation system is to motivate all students to
excel in their performance. The students’ performance is continually assessed through
Continuous Assessment (CA) and End Assessment (EA). The CA, EA break up for
theory papers is 25:75 and practicals is 40:60.

2.6.2 End Assessment Examination (EA)

a) Semester examination will be conducted at the end of each semester after
completing a minimum of 90 working days.
b) EA examinations for the odd semester will generally be held during November and
even semester during May.
c) The question papers for all the courses will be set by the external examiners.
d) The exam will be conducted for a maximum of 75 marks for three hours. The
passing minimum is 50% (38 out of 75 marks) and overall passing minimum
putting the CA and EA marks together will be 50%.
e) Question Paper Pattern:

Part B 25 Marks 5 Questions- 5 Marks each – either or type.
Part C 20 Marks 2 Questions -10 Marks each (2 out of 4 questions other
than 1st unit)

f) There will be two independent valuations for all theory courses with one valuation
by the course faculty and the other by external examiner. If there is a difference of
15% or more, the paper will be referred for revaluation to the result passing board
whose decision shall be final.
g) There will be single valuation for the extra credit courses. The examination will
be conducted for 100 marks. There is no internal examination for the extra credit
courses. The passing minimum is 50% (50 out of 100 marks). The question paper
format is given below.
Section A : 5 x 20 = 100 (Essay type question) - Total : 100 Marks
h) Since it is an extra credit course, it will not be considered for classification or for
the calculation of GPA & CGPA.
g) Supplementary examination will be conducted for the benefit of final year students
after 15 days of the declaration of the final semester results. Candidate who has

arrears in any semester can appear for the supplementary exam conducted in the
final semester.
h) A candidate may request for re-totaling of his/her answer script by applying
application addressing to the Controller of Examination through the Principal,
paying prescribed fees. This provision is available for all theory papers taken in the
EA. However there is no provision for revaluation of theory papers.
2.7 Grading
The following table gives the marks grade points, letter grades and classification
to indicate the performance of the candidate.

Improvement of Marks in the subjects already passed
Candidates desirous of improving the marks awarded in a passed subject in their
first attempt shall reappear once within a period of subsequent two semesters. The
improved marks shall be considered for classification but not for ranking. When there is
no improvement, there shall not be any change in the original marks already awarded.
Classification of Successful candidates
A candidate who passes all the examinations in Part I to Part V securing following
CGPA and Grades shall be declared as follows for each part:

2.8 Course Completion
Students shall complete the programme within a period not exceeding five years from the
date of admission.
3. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE – OVERVIEW

3.1 Mandatory Credits
The total mandatory credits to be earned by a student to qualify for MBA degree are 105.
The credit for a paper is fixed by giving due weight age to the contents of the curriculum.
The maximum total marks to be earned by the student are 2625.
3.2 Full Credit Courses
The programme has 14 core courses in the first year of study. There are 3 core papers in
the third semester and 2 papers in fourth semester. Four elective papers shall be opted by
the students during the third and fourth semester.
3.3 Cyber Security & Computer Applications in Management
Practical Examinations will be conducted with one internal examiner and one external
examiner at the end of I semester. 20 marks will be given by Internal Examiner as CA

3.4 Comprehensive Assessment
The students will be assessed on their conceptual knowledge in the fundamental courses.
Comprehensive assessment will be conducted at the end of II semester on the courses of
the I and II semesters. The assessment will be through online multiple choice questions.
Students who do not obtain 50% have to reappear for the assessment in the next semester.
3.5 Field Study
The students will undertake field study for one week in the second semester in a relevant
area. The field study will be a group task and the group size will be decided as per the
requirement. The faculty advisor and students will identify the topics of field study. A
report should be submitted to the faculty advisor within the stipulated time after
completing the fieldwork. The internal faculty committee will conduct viva-voce for the
field study. The report carries 20 marks and viva-voce 30 marks.
Students who fail in the field study and viva-voce examination / who are absent for the
viva-voce/ who fail to submit the report before the due date will have to re-submit the
report and take up the viva-voce examination during the subsequent semester

A course would be run with contact classes if there is a registration of minimum 15
students. However the final decision to offer the elective rests with the department.
Electives will be offered in specialization and sectoral streams. The student should opt for
any two papers in any one stream of specialization and any two papers in any one sectoral
stream for the third and fourth semester respectively.
3.7 Extra Choice Base Credit Course
Students can opt for extra credit courses from the second semester of their admission
only. They can choose any subject (except lab papers) from any semester from the cross
major subjects and they cannot choose the core papers / lab papers offered in the same
discipline. No student will be permitted to choose more than 4 such courses in a semester.

Major projects for six weeks will be carried out at the end of second semester in a
specialized functional area. A report of the project work should be submitted to the faculty
advisor within the stipulated time after completing the project work. Viva-voce for the
project work will be conducted in the third semester by faculty committee consisting of
internal and external members. The maximum mark will be 100 and the passing minimum is
50 marks. The external carries 75 marks and internal 25 marks; the external mark will be
evaluated and decided by both the examiners. Students who fail in the project work and
viva-voce examination or who are absent for the project viva-voce/ who fail to submit the

CURRICULUM DESIGN AND STRUCTURE
(Effective from 2016 -17) 1. INTRODUCTION
The Coimbatore Institute of Management And Technology (CIMAT) was established in
1996, by Kovai Kalaimagal Educational Trust, a well-known Charitable Trust in Coimbatore. The
institute is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recognized by UGC
under Section 2f &12b of UGC Act and affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore It is an
ISO 9001:2000 certified institution.
The institute exclusively offers post-graduate programmes in Business Administration (MBA)
and in Computer Applications (MCA). The Institute was given autonomous status by UGC and
Bharathiar University from the academic year 2010-2011. CIMAT also offers PhD / M.Phil
programmes in management and M.Phil programmes in Computer applications. A separate division the
center for Research is functioning in CIMAT to promote research efforts. The Center undertakes
research projects on its own and sponsored by other institutions, government departments, U.G.C and
AICTE, in topics of current interest. Research proposals are submitted to the sponsoring agencies and
they are implemented as per the memorandum of understanding. It promotes industry - CIMAT tie-up
that brings the benefits of research to the faculty and students and the expert opinion of the faculty to
the entrepreneurs.
The Institution is having complete infrastructural facilities to impart quality education with a
state of the art library with ample reference material covering wide topics and computer lab with latest
systems. The laboratory-operating environment includes Windows 2003,

Java and Dot net are available. A separate communication cell is established to improve the
communication skill of students. An association of Management studies – Horizon and an association
of Computer Applications – Netzone organizes various activities to develop managerial ,technical and
leadership qualities of the students .Apart from the association various club like Finance Club
,Marketing Club ,HR Club ,Marketing Club ,Information Technology club organizes special
programmes for the development of knowledge and skill sets of the students in their special area.
The Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) of CIMAT which is sponsored by
Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi aims to
promote and implement programmes for building curriculum and training personal and
assisting trainers by exploring their entrepreneurial aptitude and apply their conceptual
knowledge in developing business plans in entrepreneurial activities.
To be effective in the current environment, professional education should provide
broad intellectual understanding of the new paradigm, newer techniques of decision-making

2. REGULATIONS
This regulation is effective from the academic year 2015 – 16 for the students admitted
in the academic year 2014-2015.
2.1 Eligibility for Admission
MCA
A pass in any recognized Bachelors degree of minimum 3 years duration (10 + 2 + 3/4 years
pattern) in any discipline with core Mathematics (or) Business Mathematics at Higher Secondary
Level or A pass in any recognized Bachelors degree with 10 + 3 years diploma +3 years pattern
with Mathematics at Diploma level or Mathematics or Statistics as one of the subjects at the degree
level or A pass in any recognized Bachelors degree of minimum 3 years duration (10 + 2 + 3 years
pattern) in any discipline with Mathematics or Statistics as any one of the subjects and required to
posses the qualification as per Bharathiar University/Government norms.
MCA (Lateral Entry)
A pass in Bachelors degree of minimum 3 years duration in BCA, B.Sc.(Computer Science/
Computer Technology/ Information Technology) or equivalent with Mathematics as a course at
Higher Secondary level or at Graduate level and required to posses the qualification as per
Bharathiar University/Government norms.

2.2 Duration and Course of Study
This Course of Study shall be based on Semester System. This Course shall consist of
six Semesters covering a total of three Academic Years. For this purpose, each Academic Year
shall be divided into two Semesters; the first, third and fifth Semesters; July to November and
the second, fourth and sixth Semesters; December to April. The Practical Examinations shall
be conducted at the end of each Semester.
2.3 The Medium of Instruction and Examinations
The medium of instruction and examinations shall be in English.
2.4. Requirements for Attendance
a. A candidate will be permitted to take the examination for any semester, if he/she
secures not less than 75% of attendance out of the 90 working days during the semester.
b. A candidate who has secured attendance less than 75% but 65% and above shall apply
with prescribed fee for the condonation of lack of attendance. On the recommendation of
the Principal he will be permitted to take up the examination.
c. A candidate who has secured attendance less than 65% but 55% and above in any
semester, has to compensate the shortage of attendance in the subsequent semester besides,
earning the required percentage of attendance in that Semester and take the examination
of both the semester papers together at the end of the latter semester.
d. A candidate who has secured less than 55% of attendance in any semester will not be
permitted to take the regular examinations and to continue the study in the subsequent
semester. He/she has to re-do the course by rejoining in the semester in which the
attendance is less than 55%.

e. A candidate who has secured less than 65% of attendance in the final semester has to
compensate his / her attendance shortage in a manner to be decided by the Head of the
department concerned after rejoining the course.
2.5 Restriction to Take the Examinations
a. Any candidate having arrear paper(s) shall have the option to take the examinations in any
arrear paper(s) along with the subsequent regular semester papers.
b. Candidates who fail in any of the papers shall pass the paper(s) concerned within five
years from the date of admission to the said course. If they fail to do so, they shall
take the examination in the revised text / syllabus, if any, prescribed for the
immediate next batch of candidates. If there is no change in the text / syllabus they
shall take the examination in that paper with the syllabus in vogue, until there is a
change in the text or syllabus.
c. In the event of removal of that paper consequent to the change of regulations and / or
curriculum after a five year period, the candidates shall have to take up on equivalent
paper in the revised syllabus as suggested by the chairman and fulfill the requirements
as per regulations/curriculum for the award of the degree.
2.6 The Evaluation System
The major objective of the institution’s evaluation system is to motivate all students to
excel in their performance. The students ’ performance is continually assessed through
Continuous Assessment (CA) and End Assessment (EA). In the lab orient courses the
students performance is assessed through theory examination and continuous assessment of
their programming skills. In the lab oriented courses the CA and EA break up is 40:60. The
EA break up for theory course is 25:75.

2.6.2 End Assessment Examination (EA)
a) Semester examination will be conducted at the end of each semester after completing
a minimum of 90 working days.
b) EA examinations for the odd semester will generally be held during November and
even semester during May.
c) The question papers for all the courses will be set by the external examiners.
d) The theory exam for lab oriented courses will be conducted for a maximum of 75 marks
with three hours duration. The passing minimum is 50% (38 out of 75 marks) and overall
passing mark will be 50% putting together CA and EA marks

e) The practical examinations for lab oriented course will be conducted for 30 marks
with three hours duration. The question will be set by the course coordinator along with
external examiner.
f) There will be double valuation for all theory courses, with one valuation by the
course faculty and the other by external examiner. If there is a difference of 15% of
marks in the two valuations then, board valuation is final.
g) There will be single valuation for the extra credit courses. The examination will be
conducted for 100 marks. There is no internal examination for the extra credit courses.
The passing minimum is 50% (50 out of 100 marks). The question paper format is
given below.

h) Since it is an extra credit course, it will not be considered for classification or for the
calculation of GPA & CGPA.
i) Supplementary examination will be conducted for the benefit of final year students
after 15 days of the declaration of the final semester results. Candidate who has arrears
in any semester can appear for the supplementary exam conducted in the final semester.
j) A candidate may request for re-totaling of his/her answer script by applying
application addressing the Controller of Examination through the Principal, paying
prescribed fees. This provision is available for all theory papers taken in the EA.
However there is no provision for revaluation of written papers.
2.7. Grading

Improvement of Marks in the subjects already passed
Candidates desirous of improving the marks awarded in a passed subject in their first

shall not be any change in the original marks already awarded.
