When you talk to someone and use their name, it is polite to add san to their name. It can be added
to either a surname or a given name. kun can also be added to young boys names, and chan can be
added to young girls names.
sensei is added to the names of teachers.
So, if you were talking to a lady called Akiko you would say akikosan.
If you were talking to a young boy called Toshi you would say toshikun.
If you were talking to a young girl called michiko you would say michikochan.
If you were talking to your teacher Mr Tanaka you would say tanaka sensei.

When saying your phone number in Japanese, the numbers are said one after the other and zero is used for 0.
You also say no after the area code or where there is a gap. No is pronounced like the no in not.
Moshi moshi もしもし means ‘hello’ on the phone.
You then say your family name followed by desu です.
Look at the dialogue below.
The word for phone is denwa でんわ and bangoo ばんごう means number. Nan ban なんばん means What number? The ban is short for bangoo.
