AMPAIGN FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN  ACHIEVEMENT 330-747-12

Initiate a Community-wide Campaign for African American

Achievement to engage, encourage, educate, motivate,organize and mobilize parents and students to achieveacademic excellence. The Campaign is a coordinated,intensified and sustained effort to 1) raise awareness of thecrisis in education for African American students, 2) strengthen

the abilities of families to provide the best social and culturalskills for their children, and 3) support Best Academic Practice

students, parents, teachers and schools.

SPREADING THE WORD THAT . . .ACHIEVEMENT MATTERS!

Parent Student Union 330-333-3484The Purpose of the Parent Student Union is to provide aCollective Family Resource Support Network which EmpowersParents and Students to know and use their Roles, Rights,Responsibilities, Powers and Options to achieve success.www.parentstudentunion.com 

Achievement Month  Encourage African American churches, fraternities, sororities,

and professional and civic organizations to use their monthlymeetings to identify, recruit, award and celebrate youth who areachieving and Doing the Right Thing.

Media Campaign  An intra-community-wide communication process targetingAfrican American families, churches, organizations, committeesand events will be launched to promote the message that

African American Achievement is taking place and needs to beaccelerated.

CREATING CONSUMER DEMANDFOR BETTER SCHOOLS

Community Education Leadership Summits  Drawing upon the expertise, time and resources of the AfricanAmerican community’s youth, spiritual, professional, academicand entrepreneurial leaders; Education Leadership Summits will be organized to analyze and communicate Best Social,Academic and Career Practices our parents and children.

Data Collection  A key activity of the Campaign is to illustrate what exists forchildren vs. what ought to exist. Campaign data collection willseek to assess if . . .

1. Younger children have access to early qualitychildhood socialization and education;

2. Teachers are highly qualified and fully prepared;3. Students are ready to learn, and learning from a

curriculum that challenges and prepares them forhigher education, entrepreneurship and the world ofwork in the 21

stCentury;

4. District schools are fully equipped and organized forteaching, learning and success; and

5. Youth, in and out of school, have access to qualityprograms which support their social and educationaladvancement and overall health and economicdevelopment.

Advocacy  Data collected will indicate the action steps the local communitymust take to correct the problem. Advocacy will include

education workshops, one-on-one meetings and high stakesnegotiation. It will draw upon the resources and opportunitiesthat local businesses and other community stakeholders canprovide to schools that are, and are not, meeting highexpectations and Best Social & Academic Practices.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

The Campaign for African American Achievement is acommunity-based movement that embodies the values ofpositive social development, academic achievement, economicindependence and self-determination.

Among children and youth, the Campaign will foster:1. Positive attitudes about social and academic

achievement;2. Consistent and enthusiastic participation in school;3. Commitment to meeting and exceeding educational

standards;4. Increased social polish and improved navigational

skills; and a5. Heightened sense of history, community and self-

worth.

As a result of the work of the Campaign Partners,our community will see:

1. Schools that are more focused on student learning ansuccess;

2. Higher proportions of qualified, motivated successfulteachers in our community schools;

3. Increased enrollment and graduation, passing ofrigorous courses; and

4. Increased access to, and involvement in positive youtdevelopment programs.

In short, the Campaign for African American Achievement will help rejuvenate the Community, raise the social andachievement levels of our children and prepare them to meetthe demands of the 21

stCentury.

RESPONSE TO THE SOCIAL, ACADEMIC & CAREER CRISIS 

FACING OUR YOUTH, FAMILIES & COMMUNITY  

Our Children Our Destiny

The Third Strategy is aimed at advocating in public policy

arenas, which influences the lives of our children and youth andholding them accountable for the outcomes expected.

The Second Strategy focuses on identifying, supporting, promoting,awarding and sustaining Best Social, Academic & Career PracticeStudents, Classroom Teachers, schools and family support systems.

The First Strategy concerns the Role, Rights, Responsibilities and

P.O.W.E.R. Options of the Family and Community to ensure our children:

A) Are properly socialized at home and receive a liberating, quality and equitablecultural education within the family unit;

B) Acquire spiritual understanding and technical skills-based education in thecommunity; 

C) Receive a quality and equitable education which ensures they are preparedto graduate, meet higher education standards and the demands of the 21st Centur .

When we are successful at creating systemic change, the indicators

listed below will serve as evidence of our accomplishments and the successof our children:

• More social and enhanced survival and success skills,

• A heightened sense of history and self,

• Better grades and higher test scores,

• A larger group of African American graduates prepared for highereducation, entrepreneurship, and the current and future workforce.
