Introduction• SD 85 Vancouver
Island North
What was needed?
• A new school.• The old school was 55 years old and had
reached the end of its life.• A new school could have taken 5 years to
build and there would have been a multi-purpose room for a gym.
What was done?
• Could a modular ex CFB school building on the grounds of PHSS be used?
• Randy Ball, Director of Works and Maintenance SD85 thought so.
How was it done?• Secretary Treasurer, John Martin
knew there was an Annual Facility Grant Fund with around 1 million dollars in it.
• Could this fund be used?• Superintendent, Kathy Bedard
and John Martin presented their proposal to the Board of Education.
• The Board of Education liked the proposal voted on a motion and the process began.

“One of the important outcomes of renovating and seismically updating the school, including the gymnasium and the library, is that Alert Bay School became one of the safest schools in the district”
• “Taking into account the importance of the “3 R’s”, we ‘recycled’ an older building, ‘reduced’ the footprint of the school, and ‘reused’ parts of the original school, including furniture, cabinets, and treasured artwork”
