¿Qué le gusta de San Sebastián?Es una maravillosa ciudad parapasear, comer..., a la que siemprees un gusto ir. Y aunque sea untópico decirlo, es la mejor ciudaddel mundo para comer: MartínBerasategui, Arzak, Akelarre...

¿Y de su Festival de Jazz?Indudablemente, su programación,que ha sido siempre modélica.

¿Cuál es su relación con este im-portante evento musical?Desgraciadamente, no he sido asi-duo del festival porque el trabajome lo ha impedido. Leo con envi-dia el programa en los periódicos,y veo y grabo algunos de los con-ciertos que emiten en televisión.

Aunque este año estoy pensandoseriamente en acudir.

De la programación de este año,¿qué actuaciones no hay que per-derse por nada del mundo?No quisiera perderme nada, peroKenny Barron, Mulgrew Miller yCedar Walton son tres de mis pia-nistas favoritos. Tampoco me per-dería a Bebo. Ni a Phil Woods, otromúsico al que adoro. Ni a GilbertoGil, un genio del ritmo.

¿A quién le gustaría ver en el car-tel de la edición del próximo año?A Bill Charlap o a Eddie Higgins,dos pianistas fuera de serie. A JoeLovano, con Hank Jones, GeorgeMraz y Paul Motian, su nuevocuarteto. O al trío de Lee Kopnitzcon Steve Swalow y Paul Motian.Pero, sobre todo, me gustaría ver alniño Josele con los músicos queestán en el disco que estoy produ-ciendo con él, con música de BillEvans. Pero todavía es un secreto.

How do you like San Sebastián?It is a wonderful city to strollaround, to eat in... one I alwayslove to visit. And it may sound likea cliché, but it is the world’s bestcity when it comes to eating: Mar-tín Berasategui, Arzak, Akelarre...

And its Jazz Festival?Without a doubt, its programme;it has always been a model.

What is your connection with thisimportant musical event?Unfortunately, pressures of workhave not let me attend the festivalas often as I would have liked. Ialways read the programme en-viously and sometimes watch theconcerts shown on television or I

record them. Although this year Iam seriously counting on gettingthere and not missing it.

Of this year’s programme, whichare the performances you wouldnot miss for anything in the world?I wouldn’t like to miss any of it,but Kenny Barron, Mulgrew Millerand Cedar Walton are three of myfavourite pianists. Nor would I missBebo. Or Phil Woods, anothermusician I adore. Or Gilberto Gil,a genius of rhythm.
