The Star System On all our bulls, we put a box of stars at the bottom. This lets us take multiple affective EPDs along with what we know about the cow families and the conditions of that production year and summarize it all for you. In other words, if they’re a 4 star Calving sire, we know that the shape of that bull, his data & pedigree and his mother’s history all combine to make him one we wouldn’t hesitate to use on heifers. 3 stars means we’d use him on heifers UNDER SUPERVISION. Does this mean one star is a cow-killer? Absolutely not. We would NEVER sell anything we would not use in our own herds. PERIOD. One star calving ease means use on mature cows without a history of problems. For females, we’re taking longevity, udder structure, fertility under range conditions, mature size, fleshing ability, etc into account. That a bull gets 3 stars means he probably has a young dam. Carcass & growth follow the same principles.
Actual Performance vs. EPDs EPDs take into account performance & ancestry of many individuals across different production systems, climates, herds, etc. instead of just one individual’s performance in one herd in one set of circumstances in that particular year. Therefore, we consider EPDs a better indicator of that animal’s genetic abilities than actual performance. When we take weights, measure scrotals or scan for carcass traits, we have some bulls who are older than the average by quite a bit, and some that are younger. The breed associations take that data and adjust it using many variables and come up with a standardized number so that bulls can be compared on a more even footing. For example, what would this bull have weighed at 1 year old (365 days) given that he weighed 1325 when he was 400 days old coming off test. This tends to overcompensate younger bulls and penalize older bulls, especially in a herd’s comprised of earlier maturing cattle. This is why we recommend you look at EPD’s over actual performance. That is also why an older bull with an 1150 lb actual yearling weight might have a 1050 lb adjusted YW yet a higher YW EPD than a younger bull with a heavier ADJUSTED YW. Clear as mud?
Back by popular demand: Bulls Will Sell in Catalog Order!!!!
In order to make life easier for you, we are going to sell bulls in the same order they’re printed in the catalog. Please do not read anything into the sale order itself. The order is dependent on who would pen with whom (and not fight!) and how the bulls fit on a page with any available pictures. It is not meant to imply that any one bull is better than another!
We are pleased to again broadcast the Kniebel Cattle Co. and Downey Ranch, Inc. Production Sale “live” over the Internet. AGAIN THIS YEAR: Proxy Bidding Available. This means you can put in your maximum bid ahead of the sale at your convenience. Then on sale day, the computer bids for you. NO ONE, not even DVAuction, knows what that your max is. If something happens to your connection or you can’t be in
front of the computer, your bidding still gets done for you. Example—You put in a proxy for $5000 on Lot 12. An opposing bidder drops out at $3700. You own Lot 12 for $3800. First Time Users:
1. Visit the DVAuction web site at www.dvauction.com 2. Click on the “Create New Account” link at the top of the page. 3. Complete Registration and Apply to bid at the Kniebel and Downey Production Sale. 4. DVAuction will contact your bank to verify information. 5. DVAuction will then contact you to let you know you’ve been approved to bid and buy at the sale live from your
computer at home. After the sale: We will contact you to arrange payment and delivery. Alternately, you are welcome to call us. Note: You must have high speed internet access (DSL, T-1, or Broadband) to be able to bid during the sale. Any questions: Contact Tami with DVAuction at (308) 870-3661 or e-mail: [email protected] Or call DVAuction’s main office at (402)316-5460. We recommend that you register by Nov. 5 for on-line bidding. Every attempt will be made to complete your application even if it is on sale day. Questions? Call us or DV Auction for more information.
Not comfortable with the internet or afraid you’ll be busy in the field? Welcome to our 12th Annual Sale! Wow. Did you ever think we’d see this kind of cattle market?
Calves are up $1/lb this year. There was a time when we’d have thought $1/lb calves were high. Now, they’ve moved that much in one year. Cull cows are bringing $1400. A few years back, that would have bought you a bred heifer. Cull bulls now sell for what you might have paid for a yearling bull 5 years ago.
Is that good or bad? Beef prices are awfully high but consumer demand remains strong. That is testament to the cow/calf producer’s investment in good genetics that produce a product the customer is willing to pay for.
Corn prices are down again this year. And like we said, calf prices are up. Does that mean you can’t make money feeding? No. Good genetics still perform and fat cattle are at record highs. Keep your pencil sharp and your eyes open and there’s plenty of opportunity. Premiums on the right grids become more important every year.
There are lots of changes in our family & crew this year. In the Kniebel family, Kevin & Mary Ann’s oldest graduated from KSU and took a very good job with Elanco in Indianapolis. But don’t worry; she has a plane ticket and will be at her usual place behind the registration/settlement table with our good friend, Ginger Kopfer. Chuck & Kim’s middle daughter Chelsey, married Tanner Stucky this summer and their oldest daughter Mandy got engaged. But they will both be at the sale helping Kim provide the sale meal!
At DRI, we have a new herdsman. Abe Shanholtzer married and headed home this
summer. You’ll get to meet his replacement, Brock Graham, when you come. Brock is from New Mexico and brings a new perspective to DRI. Welcome Brock!
Barb’s folks, Joe & Sherry, continue to be involved in day-to-day operations. Kevin’s dad, Charles, still puts in long hours at the ranch. Kenny & Mary Gilsdorf (Mary Ann’s folks) just celebrated their 70th Anniversary. Bill & Diane Carpenter still farm at Garden Plain and help out every year during sale week (and other times!)
As usual, there’s a lot of other folks that help make this whole process possible. Friendships are what make life worth living. We have friends out back, in the pens, at the settlement table and less we forget, in the stands! Thank you for your continued support over these 12+ years. We are truly honored. Those of you who are new to our sale, welcome. We hope you’ll come to appreciate why 80%+ of our cattle go to repeat customers.
We’ll continue to bring the bulls through the ring live. The heifers will sell through video display. Next year brings a big change; the bulls will also sell video and not come through the ring. Everything will continue to be in pens, on-site, as always.
We’re grateful for this chance to earn your business. When we say we’re not happy until you’re happy, we mean it!

The last several years have been TOUGH. Multiple drought years have resulted in low forage quality (both grazed and harvested) which has had adverse effects on the cattle, especially the younger & older ones. Adding insult to injury, we had a wreck with the calves post-weaning. They were back on track by the time we started the bull test in December, but they were 100 lbs behind normal on the average.
Thus, performance data this year is being affected by multiple factors. However, those factors do not affect their genotype. We encourage you to rely on EPDs and genomics as you evaluate a particular bull and how he meets your needs. We continue to provide performance data, but if you will note, there are many seedstock providers who only publish EPDs. They’re telling you the same thing—rely on EPDs and genomics to measure the genetic merit of the animal.

Really solid calving ease here. Ge-nomics reinforce that with top 16% for CED. Put that with a top 1% for Heifer Pregnancy and this means more calves per cow exposed and more money. Rolled on test with a 143 ADG ratio. Interestingly, top 4% Tenderness. While few grids pay now, it’s coming.

Heart of the Herd Bred Commercial Heifers
25
KCC Bred Commercial Heifers AGAIN THIS YEAR: THERE WILL BE A BASE BID ON HEIFERS! We have always had a policy of honesty in all our business dealings. With the widespread drought, we’ve culled heavily over the last several years and now have room for more females. Rather than not offer any for sale, we decided the fairest thing to do would be to set a reasonable floor. Weaned calves are selling at $1400, open heifers are $1800, cull cows are $1400 and bred replacements are selling at record highs. And these are not just any bred replacements. These are heart of our herd heifers. There will be A LOT of heifers for sale this fall. Keep in mind that for the majority, the original breeder didn’t consider them replacement quality. Therefore, the base bid on all heifers will be $2900. Please do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions.
The heifers offered here are the result of keeping the top 1/3 of our own home-raised heifers. We then chose some from
this elite group for the sale. For these heifers to have made the cut, they had to pass strict criteria which includes: mom’s udder and stayability, calving date (first half of season), temperament, conformation, and weaning weight. They are then reevaluated before they are bred to good heifer bulls. Due to a Mary Ann’s rotator cuff injury, heifers were not artificially inseminated this year (that is a story in itself!). All heifers have had all their shots, dewormed, bangs vac-cinated, tattooed with their permanent number and are tested PI negative. Heifers will sell in lots of 3 to 5 and will not run through the ring. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presentation will run for each lot in the ring.

DRI is pleased to offer 45 bred heifers. They represent the top of our spring born heifer calves. To start with, we kept heifers that were neither too big nor too small, were born in the 1st 1/2 of the
season, had good temperaments, were good performers, and were structurally correct, etc. From that elite group, we selected heifers from the best cows. When all was said and done, we had less than 1/2 the heifers left. We are offering you 1/2 of the best of the best! These are NOT put together heifers but rather the top of our herd with generations of AI, tough selection and proven performance on the range and the rail. Synch’ed, AI’d then cleaned up with calving ease Black Angus. The heifers have had all their shots, have been dewormed, Bangs vaccinated & tested PI negative. Heifers will sell in lots of 3 to 5. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presentation will run for each lot in the ring.

We are selling more heifers than is typical this year. In 2012, we used quite a bit of heifer sexed semen. This year’s sale heifers are
the result of the 2012 season. We did the same in 2013 and just weaned another large number of beautiful heifers. We used sexed semen for 2 reasons: 1) the drought had our ranch down on cow numbers and we knew we’d have to regrow our herd as the drought eased, and 2) we figured our customers would be in the same boat. We iced it off with good conception rates, so we’re making more available to you this year. Heifers will sell in lots of 3 to 5. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presentation will run for each lot in the ring.

Group B (the following 3 heifers sell together)
We have never offered registered heifers in the sale. So why are we doing it this year? In one pasture, we had a group of 25 registered Red Angus heifers running with a bull we purchased this past spring. Prior to turnout, we synchronized and AI’d the group. Fortunately, 19 of the heifers stuck to their AI. The clean-up bull was bad and did not settle anything and so those 6 showed up open this fall at preg check through no fault of their own. We do not have a fall calving registered herd, so we decided to offer them through the sale. We are sick about this as we have NEVER sold our top pick registered replacement heifers. Our loss means you have a great opportunity to get top of the line reg-istered heifers! They are ready to breed and go to work for you. Heifer will sell in 2 groups of 3 and will not run through the ring. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presenta-tion will run for each lot in the ring.

In general, the AAA has set things up so that the higher the number, the “better” it is. In other words, for calving ease direct (CED), a bull with a 9 would calve easier than a bull with a 2. A higher marbling EPD means more marbling and so forth. However, please be careful not to think that bigger is always bet-ter. A bull with an outrageously high $Beef value may give you huge frame scores and hard doing cows. Higher milk values could lead in some instances to ud-der problems and cows that milk themselves down too much and therefore have trouble rebreeding. The other thing to consider is how much data is behind the num-bers the Association generates. We’re excited about the $EN value index which attempts to get a handle on more efficient cows. However, this the Association us-es Milk EPD and mature size only to calculate this num-ber. This misses those really efficient outliers (and some hard-doing ones too!).
The Red Angus Association is the only associa-tion that builds EPD’s from Total Herd Reporting (THR). THR uses data from the entire calf crop - not just the calves that were good enough to register. The biggest benefit of THR is the elimination of reporting bias from data used to calculate EPDs. Perhaps even more sig-nificant is the overestimate of performance of sires whose poorer performing calves are not reported. This next thought cannot be stressed too much. YOU CAN NOT COMPARE EPD’S ACROSS BREEDS!!!! Black Angus breeders consider BW +2.0 and below to be suitable for use on heifers, while Red Angus breeders will usually want a negative BW EPD. Having said that, here are the averages for par-ent sires in the AAA and RAA as of September of the current year:

Understanding & Interpreting Data
It’s no secret that both operations are big believers in retained ownership of quality cattle. After all, if you’re going to go to the trouble of stacking high-quality genetics and handling and vaccinating your cattle properly, why not reap the benefits? If you’re willing to go one step further and identify those animals, the story gets even better. You need to know how your own cattle perform, even if you never anticipate retaining ownership. As seen below, money will be made on changing markets and grid premiums. Therefore, retained ownership will happen more with grid proven cattle. Let’s take a look:
Value of 550 lb calf @ 2.55 on Oct. 1, 2014: $1402.00
Avg. feeding costs with $3.20 corn (650 lbs of gain): $420.00
Freight & Interest (calf) $40.00
Death loss (ours is lower, but we’ll use 2%) $28.00
Total costs: $1890.00
Breakeven price for May 2014 marketing $1.58
Oct. 1 Pricing through USPB for May 2015 $159.10 Potential for $13/head profit before any grid or Naturewell premiums. We averaged $110 in total premiums last year. There is opportunity for profit in this year’s market. Winner, winner; chicken dinner. $50 credit to the first person that calls and says you saw this!

Performance Data BW—Bull’s birth weight as adjusted by the American Angus Association or Red Angus Association. WW—Bull’s weaning weight adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 205 days YW—Bull’s yearling weight adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 365 days Scrotal—Bulls scrotal circumference in centimeters adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 365 days of age (1 year) Performance EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences) CED- Calving Ease Direct is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater
calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
BW-Expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny when compared to the progeny of an average bull in the breed.
WW & YW-Expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning/yearling growth to his progeny compared to the progeny of an average bull in the breed.
Milk-Also called Weaning Wt Maternal, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. In other words, it is that part of WW attributed to mi and mothering ability. It is compared to daughters of an average bull in the breed.
Scrotal-Expressed in centimeters, it is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to the progeny of an average sire in the breed. Available for BLACK ANGUS ONLY.
Stayability-The expected difference in probability of daughters staying in the herd at least 6 years. Since cows are usually only culled for being open before the age of 6, the EPD is primarily a measure of sustained fertility in female offspring. Available for RED ANGUS ONLY.
Carcass EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences) CW-Carcass weight, expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared to
progeny of other sires. Marbling-expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. REA-expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. BF or FT– expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th
and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. YG-predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score, and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units $VALUE INDEXES—Black Angus ONLY Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements
as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.
$Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.
Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
Reproductive Indexes—Red Angus ONLY Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic
predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers more than an indicator trait, it selects for producers’ desired response: pregnant heifers.
The ME EPD predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in Mega-calories per month. Differences in Maintenance Energy requirements can easily translate into differences in feed required to maintain body weight. While higher milking, higher growth (larger mature size) cattle typically have higher maintenance requirements, there are many Red Angus sire choices that defy these antagonisms - actually combining positive revenue traits (Growth and Milk) with negative Expense Traits (ME). FOR THIS INDEX, THE LOWER THE NUMBER, THE BETTER!
Total Maternal EPD (TM) predicts the rancher's actual observation of weaning weights of calves raised by an animal's daughters. TM includes the daughters milk EPD plus half of her genetic contribution to her calf's weaning weight EPD. The formula for TM EPD is:
TM EPD = Milk EPD + 1/2 (WW EPD)
