Soviet air has red Guards (better air or barrage),orange Regular, and yellow LRAF (strategicassets only usable once per month). The 23Fighter-type air units give the Soviets a decisiveair-superiority advantage.

Germans receive a randomly drawn Alert or Flakbattalion each turn. Two Flak Divisions were inAGN, and these were not normally used as front-line troops. Alert battalions represent scratch unitsof police, training, and the like.

Soviets just have the pair of Flotilla naval units. These represent mixed fleets of light craft andbarges, some armed with rockets. They fire anoccassional barrage along Lake Peipus or Gulfof Riga.

Germany’s chronic lack of fuel made it hard to keepplanes in the air and to train new pilots. The twoflavors of air units, combined with the inability to useConsolidation (per 1.7c), shows the declining state ofthe Luftwaffe circa 1944.

HG Panzer 1 Division is the largest “hypothetical” unitin the German mix. This division was railing towardthe Baltic Gap area when it was diverted to the Warsawarea, and in the game players can randomize the possiblearrival of these kinds of what-ifs, not rolling for theunit until the possible arrival turn. Strategic Fog of Waris thus integrated into the arrival schedules for playerswho don’t mind diverting from the strict historical OB.

Historically, the Soviets managed to isolate AGNfor several weeks in August, during which timethe bulk of German forces drew supply from severalports (chiefly Riga). One possible priority targetof the Red Air Force will be these vital ports.
