BIOLOGY OF HEDGEHOGS

� Solitary

� Nocturnal

� Life-span 5 - 8 years

� “Average” age of death was 3.2 years

SEXUAL DIMORPHISM

� Males

� Ventral prepuce

� Females

� Vulva close to anus

� 2-5 pairs of mammary teats

SEXUAL DIMORPHISM SELF-ANOINTING (“ANTING”)

� Elicited by unfamiliar person or object

� Lick the new object repeatedly until frothy saliva in mouth

� Rub saliva onto skin and spines

HEDGEHOG HUSBANDRY

� Adequate cage size for foraging

� About 0.3 square meter of floor space

� Avoid wire flooring

� Absorbent substrate

� Paper products

� Dried wood chips

� Not cedar

HEDGEHOG HUSBANDRY

� Cage furniture

� Ceramic food bowl

� Water bottle or bowl

� Hide box

� “Sleeping bag”

� Rocks, wood, tunnels, and other enrichment

HEDGEHOG DIET

Insectivores

� Hedgehogs in the “wild” eat:

� Beetles, Ants, Termites, Grasshoppers, Moths, Centipedes, Earthworms

� General preference for centipedes, millipedes

� Eat dead vertebrates and eggs occasionally

� Eat the whole insects

� Insects contain up to 15% fiber (NDF)

� Insects are generally low in vitamin A

INTEGUMENTARY DISEASES NEUROLOGIC DISEASE

� Demyelinating paralysis

(“Wobbly hedgehog syndrome” )

� Progressive ataxia → paralysis → death

� Ataxia and paralysis begin in hind legs

� Progression of symptoms over several months

� Age of onset: 1-36 months

� Treatment: none (supportive care)

� Etiology: unknown (hereditary?)

NEUROLOGIC DISEASE

� Demyelinating paralysis pathology

(“Wobbly hedgehog syndrome” )

� Multifocal symmetrical leukoencephalopathy

� Lesions in the white matter tracts of the brain and spinal cord

� Axon degeneration

� No inflammation
