WebFOCUS Update
UK WebFOCUS User Group2nd October, 2013
Information Dynamics influencing the BI Landscape
Data increases in size every 12 to 18 months This is accelerating because of social media and other phenomena Companies typically leverage less than 20% External sources of information enhance perspective
Size of user audience is increasing Mobile workers expecting Google‐like access to corporate information Customers and partners demanding better web view of their data Sophisticated users and novice users growing simultaneously
Security issues getting more complex Government regulations Information take‐out Separating customers (multi‐tenancy)
Requirements change rapidly Business happens faster (Decisions need to be made quicker) User requests continue to stack up Pressure from “IT‐less” tools

WebFOCUS Data DiscoveryR‐based Clustering Capabilities
When data discovery involves too many measures the process is flawed With too many measures an analysts can spend days and months investigating data with little result
However, if you can apply “machine learning” algorithms like clustering you can give an analyst a head start on discovery.
44Original Data Set New Clustered Data Set
Clustering – a function of R – can inspect large amounts of data and automatically determine relationships. Clustering charts can visually expose those relationships WebFOCUS is unique in this ability
Cluster Visual

Visualization Scalability
This is a treemap chart that allows you to visualise multiple measures via a multi‐level hierarchy. Here we see overall population by country in North America,
separated by religious affiliation (both represented by size). Color represents the % growth or loss in a segment – very powerful visual
Treemaps
Matrix charts are very popular now. Think of them as a crosstab report where each cell is a chart. For us any chart we do can be in a cell (pie, bar, line, map, treemap,
etc.)
Matrix Charts (A.K.A. Small Multiples)
Notice the sliders on each of these charts. This is very useful when
you are showing lots a visual over a “wide” time period. Days in a
year, Or months over 10 years for example. Slider moves the chart through time. The bottom slider can be adjusted left and right to
shrink or increase the time period.
Slider Charts
Notice the tooltips: These are “hoover over” pop‐ups that give you additional information about an item. The tooltips can be
edited by a designed to include things like – maximum value, average value, total value etc.
Tooltips
We now have lightweight maps. These are our own maps that are built‐in to the product and don’t require an outside API. Countries and major cities are represented and can be color‐coded as you see here. We are looking into getting these maps down to zip code level
for all areas.
Map Charts
We will have our own built‐in lightweight maps Polygons representing countries and major subdivisions
They will be extensible We are working with 2 External Mapping companies
For more extensive capabilities Packaged Metrics (e.g. Per capita income)
Notice the that these 3 charts are all interacting with each other. The selection in the bar chart on the right is highlighted using the same color in the other charts. The unselected areas are greyed out. This is automatic standard behavior in our new Active
Visualisation product target for first release in 8003 later this year.

WebFOCUS CloudWhy?
Increased Adoption Pay as you go (lower startup costs) Easy to deploy (faster time to value) Pay only for what you use Handle variable workload demands
Value for IT Offload administration and management Many Execs are welcoming the opportunity to offload infrastructure, expertise requirements and on‐going maintenance
SMB organisations have little/no IT Staff
Value for the Business An opportunity to be independent from IT As validated by the strength of the self‐service BI market, business units are increasingly marginalizing IT's involvement in BI projects
Cloud Terminology
Virtual Cloud Hosting Shared computing resources Uses virtual servers and partitioned storage Multiple tenants
Private Cloud Hosting Dedicated hardware environment Partitioned or dedicated storage No sharing of resources
Managed Hosting Services Minimise the need for IT skills on the part of the customer Operating System installation and configuration Web/App server installation and configuration Firewall installation and configuration Backup and restoration Monitoring and alerting Network management
