2015 SUMMER SCHOOL PROPOSAL
Returning Programs New or Modified Programs Elementary Reading Extended School Year
Middle School Reading STEAM Camps grades 4-6 Middle School and High School Credit Recovery STEM Camps grades 7-9
Early Warning System Summer Success Class App Camp grades 7-9 High School Credit Advancement Senate Bill 319 Reading (SB 319)
The Academic Team, Full Cabinet, and the Academic Strategic Planning Committee (ASPC) viewed this proposal and provided input.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
• Grades listed throughout the proposal indicate the grade students will enter in the Fall of 2015. This reflects the method used by DESE required for summer school application and approval.
• Online enrollment will be investigated to assist in the process of student enrollment in all programs.
• Elementary reading/math assistance programming will continue in the summer of 2015. • Elementary student enrollment will be completed earlier in the spring, allowing additional time
for teacher input and review prior to finalizing lists. • The Early Warning System Summer Success Class will continue. Twenty students who are
identified as meeting at-risk indicators of dropping out will be invited to attend. The focus of the program will be to prepare students for the upcoming school year by providing instruction in content and study skills identified as essential for the next grade. There will be minor programming changes in 2015 based on feedback from the first EWS program in 2014.
• Middle school and high school credit recovery and credit advancement will continue in the format used the past several years.
• Extended School Year and SB319 will continue as required by law. • Additional summer programming will include the modification of the STEM camps for grades 4-
6 to STEAM Camps. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics.
• APP Camp will be introduced in 2015. Beginning in the middle school grade level, this enrichment camp allows students to build mobile apps from concept to marketing presentation.
