2014 SUN BELT BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Formed in 1976 the Sun Belt Conference quickly rose to the greatest heights of collegiate athletics and the league continues to fi nd itself at the pinnacle of competition as a member of the 10-league alliance of the Bowl Championship Series and soon-to-be College Football Playoff. Because of its status as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines. The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league and its member institutions. The Sun Belt Conference signed a new multi-year agreement with ESPN, Inc. in 2012 that results in unprecedented national coverage for the league. Fans of the Sun Belt Conference can look forward to seeing more Sun Belt teams playing on national television on ESPN and ESPN2 and additionally the ESPN deal will result in more coverage on ESPNU. ESPN will continue to televise the conference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 32nd straight season in 2013, marking its longest affi liation with any conference in the country. The conference’s regional television partnership with Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST) enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach millions of households. The addition of volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’s television package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league than at any time in its history. Success has been easy to fi nd in recent years as well. Over the last fi ve years the Sun Belt Conference ranks sixth out of the 11 FBS conferences in postseason bowl game winning percentage. In fact, the Sun Belt Conference ranks ahead of noted “BCS AQ” leagues – the ACC, Pac-12 and the Big Ten. The Sun Belt Conference maintains tie-ins with the GoDaddy Bowl and the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl and come 2014, the Sun Belt will also send a team to the newly formed Camellia Bowl. A team from the Sun Belt Conference has played in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl since its inception in 2001. The SBC has won four consecutive R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl games and six out of the last seven. The GoDaddy bowl, meanwhile, has an agreement in place with the Sun Belt Conference and Mid-American Conference to provide teams for the game. The Camellia Bowl will match-up the Sun Belt Conference against the Mid-American Conference (MAC) beginning in December 2014. The game will be played yearly at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala., before the Christmas holiday and be televised nationally on ESPN or ESPN2. The Sun Belt Conference will also be part of the rotation for the newly created Bahamas Bowl and Miami Beach Bowl. Sun Belt student-athletes have a history of performing well in the class room as well. With sights set on raised benchmarks, 96.2% of teams that will make up the 2013-14 Sun Belt Conference are performing above the future Academic Progress Rate (APR) standard of 930 as the NCAA released its latest fi gures in June. Beginning with 2012-13 NCAA Championships, teams must earn a minimum 900 four-year APR or a 930 average over the most recent two years to be eligible to participate. For 2014-15 championships, teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two years to participate in championships. In 2015-16 and beyond, teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships. 153 of 159 Sun Belt teams are currently performing above the 930 benchmark. Prominent Sun Belt alumni include Lyndon B. Johnson, former President of the United States (Texas State), former All-Star baseball player Luis Gonzalez (South Alabama), former member of the United States Senate and House of Representatives John Breaux (UL Lafayette), country music superstar Tim McGraw (UL Monroe), CEO of Duck Commander and Buck Commander Willie Robertson (UL Monroe) and DeMarcus Ware, an All-Pro NFL linebacker (Troy). The Sun Belt Conference contested the 2013 football season with eight members – Arkansas State, Georgia State, UL Lafayette, UL Monroe, South Alabama, Texas State, Troy and Western Kentucky University. UALR and UT Arlington compete as non-football members. Come the 2014 season, the Sun Belt will have four new members in the league as Appalachian State and Georgia Southern were added as all-sports members and Idaho and New Mexico State have been added as football playing members. Both Appalachian State and Georgia Southern bring with them highly successfully football programs and each team will begin the process of transitioning to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) immediately. The 2014 Sun Belt football season will mark the debut of both in the league schedule and standings. Additionally, both the Mountaineers and Eagles will be able to compete for the league championship in football for the 2014 season. Both teams will fi rst be eligible to compete in a spot for a postseason bowl game come the 2015 season. Idaho and New Mexico State are familiar partners of the Sun Belt Conference, having been football members from the league’s inaugural year of football in 2001 through the 2004 season. Both members played an integral part of forming the Sun Belt Conference for football and now add strength to the league. Both teams will be immediately eligible to compete for the Sun Belt football championship and also for a spot in postseason bowl games.

When visiting New Orleans, you can fi nd something magical and unforgettable every day. Whether it’s an opportunity to sample our exceptional cuisine, to learn about our rich cultural heritage or a music festival you seek, New Orleans has something for everyone. Our laid back, friendly culture inspires guests to relax, kick up their heels and live it up.
The city is experiencing millions of dollars in hotel renovations and upgrades, there are more than 1,300 restaurants to choose from with new eateries popping up all the time and a variety of attractions to enjoy as well. The city balances a love for tradition with the energy of innovation, resulting in an eclectic vibe found nowhere else.
In New Orleans, you’ll fi nd the roots of jazz and a blossoming culture that has been long described as being unlike anything else in the United States or the World for that matter. The city is one of the nation’s oldest and has an atmosphere rich with a mix of French sophistication, Creole, African-American, Caribbean, Irish, Haitian, German, and Vietnamese, all creating an energy that can be described as something greater than the sum of its parts.
New Orleans is known for a host of attributes like its famous Creole food, abundant entertainment options, music of many styles, nearby swamps and plantations, 18th & 19th century architecture, antiques, streetcars, museums and much more.
Nicknamed the Big Easy, New Orleans has long had a reputation as an adult oriented city. However, the city also offers many attractions for families with children and those interested in culture and the arts.
New Orleans is an incredible, vibrant, bursting at the seams, melting pot of a city. Whether you’re coming here for the music, the food, to meet some fascinating new people, to experience Mardi Gras, or to just party all night long—or all of the above—a visit to New Orleans is never the same trip twice, but always memorable.
A timeless city with a unique way of life, New Orleans is a celebration. Steeped in European traditions and Caribbean infl uences, the Big Easy calls curious minds to sounds and aromas fueled by three hundred years of history.
From the moment you arrive New Orleans will beckon your ears, allure your eyes and enchant your heart. Follow the scent of gumbo fl oating out the kitchen window, foster a path that leads to the sounds of drums and a Blues guitar, create the route that welcomes you to a historic mansion or a hidden courtyard…
New Orleans is many things to many people – a home for the arts, a hub of innovation, an agent of inspiration. After the meeting, explore your own New Orleans. Take the historic streetcar down a line of shady oak trees on St. Charles Avenue, enhance an art collection in the Warehouse/Arts District galleries, and feast on authentic culinary delights that call Louisiana home.
We believe our lagniappe – a little something extra – will stay with you, calling you back to discover the mystery behind our magical city. New Orleans is and will always be a picturesque metropolitan, a culturally rich haven and an authentic experience.

Getting to New Orleans has never been easier, with many different options for those wishing to travel to the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport services the New Orleans Metropolitan areas and is very accessible.
Located in Kenner, La., Armstrong Airport (MSY) is the gateway to one of the most exciting cities in the world – New Orleans, legendary for its history, food and good times.
There are plenty of fl ights into New Orleans. Airlines operating out of the Armstrong International Airport include: AirTran, Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental, Delta Air Lines, Frontier, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, U.S. Airways.
In addition to Armstrong International Airport, fans can also fl y into Baton Rouge’s Metropolitan Airport or Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport. Both are about an hour’s drive into the city.
Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport (BTR) is located just 70 miles west of downtown New Orleans. American, Delta, United and US Airways operate frequent jet fl ights from BTR to hubs in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Atlanta, Houston, and Charlotte. A pleasant atmosphere with convenient fl ight times and connections to hundreds of destinations worldwide make BTR the easy way out of town. Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (GPT) makes fl ying easier with great low fares. Gulfport-Biloxi International is currently served by fi ve airlines offering nonstop service to Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, and St. Petersburg/Clearwater.
Those looking to get around town without a car can utilize one of the many taxi services in the city. There are over 1,200 taxis available on New Orleans’ streets and at major hotels that will take you to your destination. In addition to the taxis, the city also has a public transportation service through busses and street cars.
Getting around New Orleans by streetcar is a great way to see the city. There are three different lines: St. Charles, Canal Street, and the Riverfront, each of which originates downtown but takes you different parts of the city. Streetcars in New Orleans offer $1.25 and can be paid with exact change when you board. Refer to page 25 for streetcar routes.
The city of New Orleans also has over over 80 buses on 32 bus routes running throughout the city. For
Getting to New Orleans
TRAVELING VIA CAR?
more information on the streetcar lines or the city busses, please go to www.norta.com. This website also has updated information on each streetcar/bus (page 24) line throughout the city.
Geographically a small town, New Orleans is quite accessible throughout all parts of the metro areas via cabs and taxis. A cross-town ride from your hotel to a jazz club or neighborhood restaurant is typically under $20, and a safe, fast way to get from point A to point B if you’re unsure of streetcar or bus stop locations along the way. A cab ride typically costs $33.00 from the airport to the Central Business District (CBD) for one person and $14.00 (per passenger) for three or more passengers. Pick-up is on the lower level, outside the baggage claim area.
Limousines are also another way to travel to the city. Cruise the historic streets of New Orleans in style and class in your own limousine. Several carriers around the city are ready to serve your every VIP need.
For more options visit www.NewOrleansOnline.com or the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau at www.neworleanscvb.com.

JAMBALAYANew Orleans is famous for a lot of different meals – chief among them is the traditional rice dish known as Jambalaya. While various ingredients in Jambalaya can vary from chicken, sausage, seafood, or any mixture of the three, the bold fl avor and perfect spice is always present. The Dictionary of American Food and Drink states that the dish was born late one night when a traveler arrived at a New Orleans Inn long after dinner had been served. According to the story, the inn’s cook, a man named Jean, was told to “balayez,” or “throw something together” to feed the man. The results were delicious and the name later evolved to “Jambalaya.”
