Meet Our Newest Family! (14th Home)
• The Barrientos family consists of parents Ignacio and Ofelia Barrientos and their children:Ignacio, Alexis, Jonathan, Marya, Melissa, Christopher, Angel and John Hiram.
• Ignacio, known to one and all as "Iggie", is employed by the Township of Berkeley and the Anchor Inn in Ocean Gate. Needless to say Ofelia is kept employed caring for the children.
• The family of 10 is presently residing in very crowded circumstances with other family members after a job loss forced them out of past living conditions.
• Ignacio has begun his accumulation of "sweat equity" hours working with Luke, the construction supervisor.
• We look forward to providing them with a five bedroom two bath home in Berkeley Township!

Stephen
• Due to an illness, had one leg removed a few years ago.
• A couple of years later, his other leg was removed.
• Having no ramps and no money to have one built, he literally had become "a prisoner in his own home."
• Could not obtain his mail
• Due to the group of volunteers from the Air Force and the regular volunteer construction crew, work began on the ramp.
• Soon a trip to the mailbox, something so many of us take for granted, was once again a reality!

• Rebuilding from Sandy is a
marathon, not a sprint.
• NOHFH is one of nearly a dozen Habitat affiliates that recently received a mobile response unit to assist communities in New York and New Jersey recovering from Hurricane Sandy.
• Chevrolet donated a total of 24 Express vans that were specially outfitted with tools and equipment donated by Lowe’s and the Robert Bosch Tool Corporation.
• NOHFH was honored to receive three of the vans!
• The recommended model from the Ocean County Long Term Recovery Group coincides with Habitat’s model.

Reflection about Guatemala
NOHFH Public Relations Coordinator
“The difference this year was the interaction of the family with our volunteers. We were immersed with three generations and relatives. Grandmother Solidad, mother Carolina (prospective homeowner), and her daughter Maria Guadalupe were all eager to help. Their joy and gratitude for our help was overwhelming. When we have so much and they have so little it is truly humbling. The simple concrete block home with corrugated metal roof we were building was a palace to them.”
• Dick Read – Board Member and Former Board President
Reflection about Guatemala
NOHFH Public Relations Coordinator
It is difficult to put into words the impact on my life that going to Guatemala and living amongst the Mayan people has had. That we go to build a safe and comfortable home for a family that would otherwise not be able have one is a big part of course, but not the biggest. That would be the experience of the culture, the people, the country, the history - it draws me back. Being able, this year, to share this trip with my 17 year old grandson and seeing how the experience affected his life -powerfully, is what it was. In his words, "A life changing event."
• June Kreutzer- Board Member and Former Board President
