It’shardtobelieveit’sbeen10yearssinceahandfulofdeterminedwomen—andafewbravemen—gatheredina
NewYorkCityconferenceroomandheldthefirstofficialmeetingoftheNetworkofExecutiveWomen.Thosepioneers
committedtheirtime,theirpassionandtheirreputationstoamissionthatwasnotalwaysunderstoodbackthen
—advancingwomenintheconsumerproductsandretailindustry.Theissuewashardlynew.Womenhadbeen
underrepresentedintheindustry’sleadershipforaslongastherehadbeenanindustry.
Whatwasnewwastheappreciationthatgenderdiversitywasnotjustgoodforwomenbutgoodforbusiness—
andthedeterminationtodosomethingaboutit.ThatdeterminationcreatedtheNetworkofExecutiveWomen,an
organizationthathasgonefurther,fasterthanevenourmostoptimisticfounderscouldhavehoped.
InthefiveyearssincetheNetworkcelebrateditsfifthanniversaryin2006,ourmembershiphasgrownfrom
1,900to3,300;oursponsorshaveincreasedfrom35to72;andrevenuehasgrown150percenttomorethan
$3million.In2006wehadnineregionalgroups.Todaywehave16regionalgroups,includingNEWCanada,that
touchthelivesofthousandsofNetworkmembersandsupporterscoasttocoast.AttendanceattheNEWLeadership
Summithassoaredfrom350in2006to820in2010.Andwehaveexpandedournationalnetworkingandeducation
withtheNEWExecutiveLeadersForum(addedin2007),theNEWMulticulturalWorkforceConference(2008)and
theonlineNEWLeadershipAcademy(2010).
Butmetricsaremeaninglessiftheydon’tdrivechange.AndundertheNetwork’sleadership,theindustryhas
changed.Tenyearsago,genderdiversitywasgenerallyconsideredacomplianceissue.Today,genderdiversityis
atthetopofourindustry’sagenda,almostuniversallyrecognizedforthebusinessbenefitsitprovides.Wedidn’tdo
italone,buttheNetwork’sChampions,Ambassadors,leadersandvolunteershavehelpedtransformtheconsumer
productsandretailbusinessoneexecutiveandonecompanyatatime.
Muchremainstobedone.Whilewomenmakeupalmosthalfoftheretailindustry’slaborforce,theycomprise
just18.3percentofitscorporateofficersand5percentofitsCEOs.*Thisimbalanceisamissedopportunity—and
theunfinishedbusinessofourNetwork.
Wesalutethewomenandmenwhowerewithusfromthebeginning—toomanytoincludehere.Withoutthese
visionaries,theNetworkwouldnotbewhatitistoday,andthousandsofexecutives—myselfincluded—wouldhave
missedtheleadershipandlearningopportunitiesthatonlytheNetworkprovides.
