CONCEPT
HyPROFESSIONALS: Concept
Educating future professionals is a critical step towards thewidespread acceptance and implementation of hydrogen fuelcell technology
The project aims to develop training initiatives for technicalprofessionals– Develop a well-trained work-force– Secure the required mid and long-term human resource
availability
4
The lack of skilled technicians cannot add abarrier for the technology development, nor anextra cost

– Results:
• Funds for educational measures are available.
• Extensive R&D programs (partly owned H2&FCs) exist in most of the countries, but the
education and training topic (e.g. service and maintenance) is often a minor priority as
it appears at the end of the value chain.
– Conclusions:
• No direct calls for supporting education and training activities in the field of H2&FCs.
But funding is somewhere else...
countries of the
partners involved.
HyPROFESSIONALS: results
• Best educational practices– Objective:
• Collect the best or excellent
educational initiatives (to
replicate in other regions).
– Results:

12
– Results:
• Very little educational offer
focused exclusively on the
technology of H2&FCs.
• H2&FCS studies mostly related
to renewable energy and
graduate or postgraduate level
– Conclusions:
• Training educational offer at the vocational training level is very limited. This could
grow by adding H2&FCs modules within the current vocational training courses.

• Facilitate the future implementation

contents on the national

• Example of including H2 contents in
the New Curriculum for Renewable
Energies Vocational Training in Spain
 Include one subject (50h.) with
H2 training
 Some practical trainings are
going to take place from
September 2012 on, at the
facilities of the Foundation for
Hydrogen in Aragon.
• Example: Possible project on training on
H2&FC technologies for O&M technicians,
using the existing Demo projects in Europe
as basis.
• Rationale: provide basic knowledge in
hydrogen and fuel cell technologies as
well as safety training
• Objective: avoid rejection to H2&FC
technologies by specific technician
levels. Hands on experience in existing
facilities + e-learning modules.
HyPROFESSIONALS: results
• Identification and analysis of educational gaps and needs
• Educational offer normally adapts to the needs and does not anticipate those needs. This is especially critical for official curricula, that need several years to be put in place.
• Market for FC & H2 applications will evolve at very different paces and sizes
16
• Market for FC & H2 applications will evolve at very different paces and sizes depending on the application:
• Example 1: FC powered forklifts is a near term application but with a limited size.
• Example 2: Passenger cars is a mid term application, of a big size and needing several years to completely develop.
• Gap Analysis tries to shed light on the different approaches to cover the
mismatch of “demand” of trained technicians and “offer” by the educational
system.

Current market of forklifts is 350,000 units per year sold in Europe.
By 2011, in the USA 2,300 fuel cell powered forklifts were sold.
Sales expected to be around 4,000 units this year (2012).
18
GAP ANALYSIS: Forklifts
Fleets of fuel cell material handling equipment are already in use at
dozens of warehouses and manufacturing plants.
24 sites operating nearly 800 FC lift trucks in North America.
Central Grocers in Illinois is operating with over 200 FC lift trucks.
Sysco is operating fleets over 200 lift trucks in Texas, Pennsylvania and Sysco is operating fleets over 200 lift trucks in Texas, Pennsylvania and
Michigan.
Numerous automotive-related manufacturing facilities such as: GM,
Toyota, BMW, Nissan, Bridgestone-Firestone, and Michelin.
Pike Research’s analysis indicates that forklifts will be the
largest driver of hydrogen fuel demand by 2020,
representing 36% of the total market by that time.

GAP ANALYSIS: Forklifts
Only for forklifts deployment,
between 1000 and 2000 jobs should
be created in the US, most of them
in Installation & Infrastructure.
Similar figures in Europe would
stimulate an offer for specialized
short courses, probably privately
promoted.

GAP ANALYSIS: Automotive
By 2015, only some specialization courses will be enough to satisfy the
demand.
By 2020, demand is equivalent to half of the Automotive vocational
training students Automotive vocational training has to be updated and
adapted to the FC technologies, at least in some centers.
By 2030, demand is more than 3.5 times the Automotive vocational
training students all training centers will need to train FC technologies.
