MUSIC MOURNS DUE TOMthe passing of Vincent PaulAbbott. He was laid to rest be-tween his mother Carolyn and hisbrother Darrell in Moore Memo-rial Gardens in Arlington, TX“Vinnie Paul,” as he was known tofriends and fans, was born inAbilene, March 11, 1964.

His father, Jerry, wrote andproduced country music, so mu-sic was in the Abbott brothers’blood with “Diamond” (later“Dimebag”) Darrell on guitar andVinnie Paul choosing to playdrums. The family moved toPantego, TX and the boys foundedPantera in 1981, releasing MetalMagic (1983), Projects in the Jungle(1984) and I Am the Night (1985)with bassist Rex Brown and vo-calist Terry Glaze.

Glaze was replaced by PhilipAnselmo in 1986 and the bandreleased Power Metal in 1988, butit was 1990’s Cowboys from Hellthat brought Pantera to nationaland then international attentionand with a heavier sound followedby 1992’s Vulgar Display of Power,and Far Beyond Driven, which de-buted at #1 on Billboard charts in1994.

Vinnie Paul and Dime divestedtheir interests by opening the in-famous home-away-from-homefor every touring band, BYOB af-ter hours strip joint The Club-house in Dallas. His endorsements

included Tama and Pearl drums,Remo heads and hardware, ddrum,Sabian cymbals and Vic Firthdrumsticks.

Despite tensions amongst theband members, 1996 brought fansThe Great Southern Trendkill and2000 ’s Reinventing the Steel.Anselmo left Pantera, and theBrothers Abbott went on to formDamageplan with Bob Zilla onbass and Pat Lachman on vocals,releasing New Found Power in2004. The brutal murder of Darrellonstage at an Ohio club on theensuing tour shocked the musiccommunity but Vinnie Paul wasback behind the kit after a fewyears with supergoup Hellyeahon his own label Big Vin Records,as well as becoming a producer ofa roster featuring collaborationswith David Allen Coe, Cowboysfrom Hell, Seventh Void, Fountain-head, Hillbilly Orchestra, come-dian The Chinaman and theDimevision DVDs.

One of his passions was cook-ing. He had spent the last fewyears of his life living in Las Vegas,where he passed away in his sleepof a massive heart attack on June22, 2018.

His cemented musical legacywill live on but more so his legacyof kindness and generosity withfriends and fans alike.
