215. BULLA FOUND AT GLASTONBURY ABBEY. Our best
thanks are due to Mr. F. Bligh Bond, F.R.I. B. A,, for his kind-ness in allowing us to reproduce the photograph of a " Bulla
"of
Pope Calixtus III (1455-8) which he found m his excavations at
Glastonbury Abbey in August, 1911.The " Bulla
"is in lead and was found in the debris on the
site of the monks' graveyard. THE EDITORS.
216. CASTLE RACCHE. From notes in Professor Lloyd's
History of Wales I have inferred a possible derivation of Castle
Racche. Various interpretations and numerous versions of this
puzzling Place-name have been given, and in a Paper on the ex-
cavations of Castle Racche (S. A. P., vol. 49, dated July, 1903)Mr. H. St. George Gray has enumerated them. There are at
least thirty-seven ways of spelling it, but many of them must beclerical errors and the alternative forms of Neroche, Neracchich,Nerechurch, Nerethythe, Nerock, etc., are hardly consistent
with themselves. The prefix" Ne "
is a puzzle. But confiningourselves to Racche or Rack, which up to present time has
currency amongst the local folk, the version does not vary muchfrom time to time. In the 13th Century there is a mention of
"Quidam mons qui vocatur Castrum de Rachich "in the Ed-
wardian Forest Perambulation of 1298 : in the i4th Century there
is an entry in Bishop Drokenford's Register (a. d. 1317) about the"Capellae hermitagium de Rechych," and in another place
Rachich : in the i5th Century William of Worcester notices the" Castellum de Racche ": in the i7th Century old Gerard calls" Castle Racche "
a dirty place. Various shots have been madeat the derivation, e.g., that Castle Racche was so called from that
hateful and grim thing called "Rachentege," an instrument of
torture in Norman Castles ; also from " Rache "the name of a
hunting dog:" Four grey hounds and vi RachesFor hare and fox and wild cattes
"
Also from "Rachia," a word found in Ducange and called a
" coenosus locus," a muddy place, which would chime in withGerard's description (Greswell's Forests and Deer Parks of Somer-
set, p. 274.)But here is a possible Welsh derivation. Prof. Lloyd in his
History of Wales (vol. ii, p. 434) describing the attack in
1116 of Griffith upon the Norman Castles of Narbeth and
Llandovery says that the last named Castle was so stoutlydefended by Maredudd that only the outworks were taken, the keep remaining intact. In a note he adds " B. T. carefully
distinguishes the Rac Castell or Bailey from the Twr (Latin
Turris) or Keep."Again, in describing another attack upon the new Castle of
VOL. XII. PART xcvi. DECEMBER, 1911. x
338 Somerset & Dorset Notes & Queries.
Ruddlan in 1075, Griffith destroyed the outworks and slew manyof the defenders and returned home with valuable spoil, but
without having captured the solid keep which was the nucleus of
the fortress. Professor Lloyd adds in a note," there is a clear
distinction in the "Welsh narrative between "y baili
" and "etwr" i.e. tower or keep.
Might not " Rac Castell" be a Welsh description of a Castle
with a "Ballium," or defensive "
propugnaculum ?" The country
folk always speak of Stoke-Courcy Castle as " Castle Baily."The outer works of Racche Castle were very fully described
by the Rev. F. Warre in Vol. 5 of the Somerset Archaeological
Society, and there were abundant signs of a " Fore-castell." It
seems that Rac-castell is, according to Professor Lloyd, old
Welsh for Rhag-castell, meaning "Fore-castle." Rhag is a
common preposition signifying "before," "in face of."
Historically this derivation may be of use and very sugges-tive. It may be descriptive of the new Norman Castles set up byWilliam the Conqueror, differing from such fortresses as Exeter,
and having wide defensive circuits. But the "Keep
"or "
turris"
was always there. Mr. St. John Hope thinks that there were nostone keeps in England earlier than Colchester and the Towerthere, both the work of the same engineer, c. 1090. But howwould he explain the presence of the "
Keep"
in Ruddlan in
1075 already mentioned ? In Castle Racche there may havebeen a very early Norman Keep as the Rac or Rhag meant the
Ballium. The remains of pottery, etc., found in excavations in
July, 1903, pointed to an early Norman occupation. The fact
that "Rhag
"or " Rac "
is a Welsh word need not surprise us in
Somerset, where, as a land of the " Waelas "in King Alfred's
time (see his will), there were so many Welsh or Celtic influences.
The " Rac-Castell"therefore was only a local and popular de-
scription of a new type of Norman Castle, or sometimes, as at
Stoke Courcy, (the heritage of the Falaise family), the "Castle
Baily." Here is a point for students of military medieval fortifi-
cations.
Postcript.Since writing the above I have come across a remark on
Topographical Etymology, by the Rev. Wm. Arthur Jones, M.A.
(S. A. P. Vol. V,' p. 8r) in which he derives "Rac" from"Rhag
"in Welsh, meaning
" that which is uppermost." But his
explanation does not fit in so well with circumstances as that
provided by Professor Lloyd. W. H. P. GRESWELL.

218. A SOMERSET MILITIA MAN. From The Times of
Saturday, Sept. 14, 1811." Our readers will recollect a statement respecting a soldier
of the first Somersetshire militia, who had lain in a very surpris-
ing state of insensibility from the 26th of April, in the presentyear, down to the 1 8th of July. Various means had been resortedto for the purpose of ascertaining whether the illness was real,
such as thrusting snuff up his nostrils, administering nitrous oxydgas, electrical shocks, powerful medicines, &c., all of which
proved utterly unavailing in the attempt to arouse him from theunaccountable torpor in which he had laid so long ; nor, indeed, did any of these expedients produce in him the slightest symp-toms of animation.
340 Somerset > Dorset Notes < Queries.
We have now to add to this account a few facts, which, for
their singularity, may challenge competition with the most mar-vellous occurrence that ever reached the public notice.
A few days after our account appeared, PHINEAS ADAMS, the
subject of this curious narrative, and whose age was no more than
eighteen, on the 6th of June last, was removed from the gaol in
which he then was, to the parish of Bickenhall, a small villageseven miles from Taunton. His parents residing at that place, but being unable to receive him in their own habitation, Adamswas lodged in the poor-house a small cottage adjoining the
churchyard. In this situation he continued to be without ex-
hibiting the least evidence of an improving condition.
In this hopeless condition, he was visited by Mr. Welch, sur-
geon, of Taunton, who suggested the propriety of performing the
operation of scalping the patient, with a view to ascertain whetherthe fall, to which the illness was attributed, might not have pro-duced a depression of the brain. The proposal was communi-cated to the parents of Adams, who expressed their willingnessthat the experiment should be made. Accordingly, at the time
appointed, the surgeon accompanied Adams's father to the bed-side of his son, and there, in the presence of several respectable
persons, described to both the young man's parents the nature
and precise course of operation about to be performed. The in-
cisions were made, the scalp drawn up, and the head examined ;
during all which time the young man manifested no audible
symptom of pain, or sensibility of suffering whatever, until the
application of an instrument, with which the head was scraped in
a particular part, and then, and once only, he uttered a groan. No beneficial result appearing from this experiment, and as
his case seemed absolutely remediless, application was made to
his regiment for his discharge. On Tuesday, August 20, the discharge arrived, and was taken
over to Bickenhall by the Serjeant. On the Tuesday following, old Adams brought his son downstairs in his arms ; and on the
28th he again brought him down, the son still remaining insen-
sible. Next night (the zgth) he was seen sitting in the poor-house, with a gun in his hand, conversing with his father ; andon Friday, the 30th (our readers will participate with us in the
complete astonishment excited by the fact) he was at Mr. Palmer's,a farmer, two miles from Bickenhall, cutting spars, carrying reed
up a ladder, and assisting his father in thatching a rick !
The extraordinary rapidity of this young man's recovery, after obtaining his discharge from his regiment, having excited,in combination with the other circumstances which we formerlystated, an opinion that imposition had been practised, some of
the neighbours reported that a press-gang was coming for him.
This, it is supposed, having reached his ears, he absconded, andnot a syllable has been heard of him since. . . ."

INthe few prefatory words which are given at the issue of the
biennial volumes of Notes and Queries for Somerset and
Dorset, there is usually little to express beyond the grateful
thanks of the Editors for the support they have received in the
past on behalf of this Magazine, which has now covered a period
of four and twenty years, and their desire that a succession of
new subscribers and contributors may arise to fill the places of
those who are no longer here.
Among the friends of this periodical who have departed
since the eleventh volume was completed special mention must
be made of Mr. Hugh Norris, the first Somerset Editor, of whoma memoir appeared at page 145 in the Number for December,
1910, and of Dr. John Wordsworth, Bishop of Salisbury, whose
praise is in all the churches for his piety and learning.
The Editors are glad to have this opportunity of wishing a
Happy New Year to their supporters, and a long life to the
Magazine with which they have the honour to be connected.

220. SETTLERS IN NEW ENGLAND FROM DORSET.
1630 April. "The beginning of this month many of this
town went to plant in New England, among the rest Mrs.Sandford."
1634 April 17. "Mr. Newburgh of Marthwood Vil : and
many others set saile from Waimouth towards New England, andthe 27 of the same Mr. John Humfreys with his wife the LadySusan Fines set saile likewise for the same place. This somerthere went out to that plantation at the least 20 saile of ships andin them 2000 planters."

p. 88.)V. L. O.
221. WELLS DEANERY. Considerable alterations have re-
cently been made in the Deanery at Wells, the chief of which,
says the Times of January 3oth last,"
is the restoration of the
ancient dining hall to its original size. This hall has perhaps for
two centuries been partitioned into bed rooms and living rooms, and many of its architectural beauties have been hidden by lath
and plaster. During the alterations there have been revealed
several oriel windows containing old stained glass, and a fine
Tudor fireplace, which had been bricked up. There is a con-cealed minstrel chamber at the far end of the hall.
It is very difficult to say what the character of the Deanerywas before the time when Dean Gunthorpe (1472) recast and en-
larged it by the addition of the hall on the north side. His idea
was to provide a building with external and internal courts, with
dwelling rooms on all sides. It is thought probable that in the
building now used as a gardener's house, on the north side of the
outer courtyard a building which faces one as one enters fromthe Cathedral Green are to be found the remains of a private
chapel which served the Deans, certainly up to Dean Gunthorpe'stime. It is also believed that in the corner turrets, which nowflank the southern drawing room facing the Cathedral Green, are
Somerset & Dorset Notes & Queries. 347
to be found traces of an earlier dining hall, which was supersededby that of Dean Gunthorpe. The building after his alterations
consisted of a series of chambers on all four sides of the court,
opening one into the other, without any passage, except that
made from door to door in the large chambers. In either the1 6th or 1 7th century the obvious inconvenience of this led to the
creation of a passage through the inner court, of which very little
afterwards remained. Dean Gunthorpe's dining hall, which hada flat roof and chambers over it, extended from west to east. Tothe east of it Gunthorpe had a private chamber, from which a
passage, now destroyed, probably led on the north side to the
chapel already mentioned. The hall, like the chambers above it, had windows on the
south as well as the north side, but on the filling up of the inner
courtyard most of the south windows were blocked up and this
must have detracted greatly from the brightness of the room. It
was probably found in the i7th century that the hall was not veryuseful in a domestic house, and to meet the changed conditionsof life it was divided up by means of somewhat flimsy partitionsinto bed rooms. It is these partition walls which Dr. Robinsonis having removed. While a small fireplace was being removedfrom one of the bed rooms Dean Gunthorpe's fine original fire-
place on which are carved a gun (a rebus on his name) and a
Tudor rose was discovered."
222. ESTMOND, OF LODGE, CHARDSTOCK, DORSET.In the store-room, really the ancient south porch, of Chard-
stock church is a large stone Shield of Arms standing loose onthe floor, which has been reproduced in the accompanying illus-
tation.
It has twelve quarterings, the first and last being Estmondof Lodge, Chardstock, which Burke gives as Sable, a chevron
argent between three mullets or. Hutchins' Dorset, 1774, Vol. 2,
Index p. 39, gives the same, with Crest A lion's head erased
and crowned or, but he gives the name as Estwood of the Lodgein Charmoiith, which is an evident error. Mr. F. Were has kindlyinformed me that Papworth gives Sable a chevron argentbetween three mullets or, but that Gerard says Sable a chevronbetween three stars argent, and he thinks Gerard would be more
right in his blazon, as his stars are certainly six-pointed mullets.
Mr. Were also sent me an extract from Som. Rec. Soc., Vol.
15, p. 1 14, to the following effect :
WALTER DE LOURNEY married Joane, daughter and heiress
of John de Stafford, and widow of William de Crawthorne, andhad issue
JOHN DE LOURNEY, who married Joan, only daughter of JohnAttlodge (so called from living at a lodge near Chardstoke, Dor-
set). His only daughter,
348 Somerset & Dorset Notes & Queries.
ALICE DE LOURNEY, was married to William Jourdan, andhad issue two daughters and coheirs, viz.
JOAN, the wife of Edward Muttlebury, and MARGARET, wife
of William Estmond.Mr. Were takes the fifth quartering to be Lourney as given
by Gerard Cheque argent and azure, on a chief azure, two mul-
lets or and the sixth probably Jourdan. The second quartering is probably Bowles of Wilts, descended
from John Bowles of Bristol, living 1460, Azure in chief the
sun in splendour in base a crescent or.
The eighth quartering probably Kipping Lozengy or and
sable, on a chief a lion passant of the first.
The ninth quartering most probably Constantine Or six
fleurs de lys sable, 3, 2, i.

226. THE PORT OF WEYMOUTH AND THE MELCOMBEREGIS QUAY.
THEIR EXTENT 31 CAR. II. (A.D. 1679).
The following copy of a Return made to the Court of Ex-
chequer, 3 1 Car. II, appears in a scarce work cited below, (a.) Anabridgment only is given in Hut. Hist. Dor. Ed. 3, Vol. II. 443.
'The Settlement of the Extent, Bounds and Limits of
'the Port ofWEYMOUTH AND MELCOMBE REGIS,'
in the County of Dorset, A Member of the Port of'
Pool, in the same County ; And the lawful Place, Key' or Wharfe within the same ; Returned into the Court of'
Exchequer in Easter-Term in the thirty-first Year of the'
Reign of his late Majesty King Charles the Second.
"THE said Port ofWeymouthand Melcombe Regis extends" from the Neck or Point of Land called St. Aldham's Head, and" so in a supposed direct Line West-South-West to one other" Neck of Land called The Beel of Portland, and so from the said" Necks or Points of Land West and by North up the River or"Stream called Weymouth Stream to Weymouth Bridge."
All that open Place, Key or Wharfe, commonly called or" known by the Name of Melcombe Key, being in length three" hundred ninety-two Foot or thereabouts, beginning that Length" at the Bridge called Weymouth Bridge and so directly East-" South-East to the Stairs commonly called The George Stairs ;
" Abutted and bounded with the said George Stairs towards the"East-South-East, The Bridge called Weymouth Bridge and the
" House belonging to Thomas Hyde Merchant towards theWest-" North-West, The River or Stream called Weymouth Stream" towards the South-South-West, and the Town of Melcombe"Regis towards the North-North-East ; Being in Breadth at the
" West-North-West End of the said Key or Wharfe two and"twenty Foot or thereabouts, and in Breadth at the East-South-
' East End about fifteen Foot."This Return is valuable as an official document evidencing
the length and breadth, at the period named, of the Customs
Quay of Melcombe Regis i.e. of the place where the Customdues were leviable. Hence no mention is made of the Quay onthe Weymouth side, It is useful, too, as fixing by measurement, that the position of the North end of the then Bridge over theHarbour was the same as that of the present bridge.

The old "George
"Inn, (which stood on the site of the
present building of the same name, and in which the Judges, when on circuit, were formerly entertained by the Town Author-
ities), was pulled down in 1884. The "George Stairs" are still
known by that name. In ancient days, Melcombe Regis did not
extend in an East-South-Easterly direction beyond those stairs.

Bridge, was a leading Merchant, and was several times Mayor of

227. WEYMOUTH. BRIDGES ERECTED ACROSS THE HAR-BOUR.
It may be well to present a short connected account of the
several bridges which, at different periods, have been erected
across the Harbour to connect the twin-towns of Weymouth andMelcombe Regis.
The first bridge was built shortly after the union of the
towns; it had 17 arches and a drawbridge; was of timber, andcost ^1,500. It took the place of the old Passage-boat. It was
standing in 1594, but Denis Bond, of Lutton, in his Chronologywrites,
"1597, The Timber bridge att Weymouth bill"; the latter
date was probably that of completion. In 1625 this bridge was falling into decay: (a) it was much
damaged, too, during the Civil Wars. Having been frequently
repaired, it was, between 1669 and 1673, either wholly or par-
tially rebuilt, as appears, (inter alia), by a Constitution, made 30
July, 1673, which sets out that the Bridge "in most places wasof late very much in decay and a great part of the same bridge in
the middle part thereof cleane broken down "; also that the Cor-
poration had been at great charges in rebuilding the bridge andthe drawbridge thereof, (b). For the rebuilding, Charles II con-tributed 300 tons of stone from the Crown Quarries at Portland (c).There is no direct record of this rebuilding either in Hutchins (d)or Ellis (e).
In 1713 the erection of a new bridge was commenced; the
expense was borne by the four Representatives of the Borough ;
this bridge lasted 29 years only.In April, 1741, the Corporation accepted a proposal made
by John Tucker, Esq.," to take down the old damaged bridge
over the Harbour and to erect a new bridge," which was accord-
fa). Weymouth Borough Records.

ingly done. It had a drawbridge in the middle. Like its prede-cessor, it lasted about 29 years only.
All the bridges above mentioned communicated with St.
Thomas Street, that being one of the two principal streets and in
a direct line to Dorchester.A new bridge was built in 1770, and, in order to enlarge the
Harbour, and afford additional convenience for shipping, it waserected 70 yards to the Westward of the site of the former bridges, thus communicating with St. Nicholas Street at the point fromwhich the Passage-boat formerly started. The selection of this
street, instead of St. Thomas Street, was, according to Ellis (f),
the cause of great opposition on the part of the townsmen, on the
ground of considerable inconvenience to them; they unsuccess-
fully petitioned against it. The bridge was built at the expenseof John Tucker, Esq., one of the Representatives of the Borough,at a cost of nearly ^5,000 (g). It was a handsome structure. A viewof it, published by J. Fittler, London, and J. Love, Weymouth,in 1790, is preserved and shews three arches.
The bridges referred to above were all erected, either wholly or
mostly, of timber. On 12 January, 1824, the present bridge, erected of stone, at a cost of upwards of ^20,000, was opened for
traffic ; it took ^\ years to build.

NOTICE OF BOOK
232, THE GLASTONBURY LAKE VILLAGE. Vol. i. (II Vols.
Royal 410. Pub. The Glastonbury Antiquarian Society. z 25.
net.) by Arthur Bulleid, L.R.C.P., F.S.A., and Harold St. GeorgeGray, pp. 352 + xxviii and maps and plates.
Unexpected delays have occurred in the issue of the first
volume of this splendid work, but by the kindness of the authors
we have been sent an unbound advance copy in order that a
notice of it may be included in our volume for this year. Wemay say at once that it has been more than worth waiting for.
The printing is extremely good, and the plates, the preparationof which has been the greatest cause of delay, are first-rate, num-
bering no less than 47, together with 1 1 folding plan sheets and
136 illustrations in the text. Dr. Buileid's plans and drawingsof wooden objects are extremely clear and carefully executed.
Mr. Gray's photographs, both of relics and of views of the exca-
vations, are a feature of the book : whilst Mr. Sprankling's draw-
ing of a large number of the smaller relics are remarkable for
delicate accuracy of contour and line. To say that the illustra-
are of the type originated for archaeological records by the late
Gen. Pitt-Rivers is sufficient description of their form, style and
scope. The bulk of the volume itself is taken up with detailed de-
scriptions of the hut-mounds examined, and of the relics foundin and round the dwellings. Each hut has been separately and
closely planned and described in such a way that it would be
quite possible to reconstruct more than one of them from the
remains and plans combined. The relics themselves are de-
scribed in detail under the headings of their special material
bronze, lead and tin, shale, and wood, with separate classification
of the weaving combs and crucibles, for both of which the villageis decidedly notable. The most careful dimensions are given in
every case, and we believe that no single relic, except in the
case of actual duplicates now and again, is left unillustrated.
But the dry detail of the dimensions and so on of the relics
is by no means the most valuable feature of this volume, thoughit is remarkable for the care and accuracy with which it has beenrecorded. The authors have aimed to give, beyond this, refer-
ences which will make the work useful to all students interested
in the Late-Celtic Period, and they have succeeded in a waywhich will render the book a standard on the subject for manyyears to come, even if it is not more likely that future work will
not seem merely supplemental to this. It seems a great deal to
suggest, but to take the section on bronze fibulae, for instance
one finds full classification lists of the various types, with refer-
ences to every possible find, English and other, which may have
Somerset & Dorset Notes & Queries. 373
any bearing on the relics of the Village. It is the same witheach section, and the book is a mine of information on the art
and craft of the age as it has been elucidated to the present date.
Wisely enough the authors have theorised very little, prefer-
ring to leave doubtful points of identification, &c., to be cleared
up by future research. But as we write we suddenly meet with a
proof of how very much of the daily life of the Briton of the im-
mediately'preRoman period can be safely reconstructed from the
Glastonbury discoveries. We refer to a beautiful series of pic-tures by Mr. A. Forestier in the Illustrated London News of Dec.
2nd, drawn from these plans and plates with the assistance of Mr.Bulleid himself: They are imaginative, of course, but very little
so, and they are worth recording as in themselves of the greatestinterest to our counties.
The volume has the advantage of an introductory chapterby Dr. Robert Munro, the well-known author of "The Lake
Dwellings of Europe," who has watched the work at Glastonburyfrom the first, and has given a full description of its inceptionand progress, before passing on to a most valuable discussion of
the problems connected with the inhabitants of the Village, anddate to which it should be referred.
We have expected a great deal of these volumes, but wemust say that this first has gone beyond expectation. The labour
expended on its production by the joint authors must have beenimmense, and they deserve, and will find, the thanks of those for
whom they have wrought so long. The Glastonbury AntiquarianSociety, who issue the book, have every reason to be proud of it.
In its binding of green art canvas, with a beautiful gold impres-sion of the celebrated bronze bowl on the front cover, and a
margin of a design taken from the pottery of the village itself, it
will take its place on the shelves beside the volumes which weowe to Gen. Pitt-Rivers, with which it is uniform in size and
general" format."
Any communication concerning the volume should be madeto Mr. H. St. G. Gray, at Taunton Castle. We believe that this
first edition is not yet fully subscribed for.
