Son of Dav id Ni l es and Betsey (Chamber la in) M a r k h a m , was born June 21 ,1838, in Great Va l l ey , N . Y . H e was a laborer when the C i v i l W a r began, left his work and was enrol led as a pr ivate , Feb. 1 , 1862, at Great Va l l ey , in Co. C, 105th N . Y . V . I . H e was i n fight at Strausburg. June 1 1 , 1862 he was accidentally shot by a comrade a t C a t l e t t ' s StJition; was confined in camp hospital for three weeks, sent to A l e x a n d r i a for one week, thence to Fair fax Seminary. He was convalescing when one day he was coming downstairs on crutches and f e l l , severely i n j u r i n g his left Ach i l l es tendon; he came home the lat ter p n r t o f A u g . , 1862 and was la id up w i t h this for more than two years. He was discharged A u g . 5, 1862, at Fa i r fax Seminary. Christ ­mas Eve , 1867, he was united in marriage at H u m p h r e y , N . Y . , to Phoeba C. Chase, daughter of Dav id and El izabeth Ryder Chase. To them were born tl iree ch i ldren , H . F r a n k , Jennie Grace (Serinnn) and Isaac P. M r s . M a r k h a m died Dec. 18, 1892, of cancer, at Great Va l l ey . Issac P. M a r k h a m , his brother , was in 105th N . Y . V . I . , ami Harr ison o f 12th l a . V . I . , was wounded and taken ))risoner. Com. M a r k h a m was constable for 20 years, J . of P. for 10 years, and is now U . 8* Pension A t t o r n e y and very successful in his practice; he was a member o f the K . 0 . T . M . , J r . 0 . of A . M . , Sons of Temperance, o f the U . B . C h u r c h , and is now a member in good s U n d i n g o f V a n A e r -nam post, 282, of E l l i c o t t v i l l e , N . Y . ; an honored, respected cit izen.

Y . ; he WMS l i v i n g in the town of Great V a l l e y when the summons came for the boys to don the blue; he was enrolled i n M a y , 1861, i n Co. A , 65th N . Y . V . I . , as a private . F a i t h f u l l y , w i t h this command he served u n t i l J u l y , 1863. I n J u l y , 1864 he re-enlist-od at D u n k i r k , N . Y . , i n Co. 1 ,187th N . Y . V : I . , 1st D i v . , 5 th A . C. He fought at Hatcher ' s R u n , Southside U . 11., L e f t of Petersburg at Stony Creek, and cont inual fighting u n t i l Lee surrendeied. A t Sto­ny Creek, Com. M o f i i t was wounded in side by a spent b a l l . Y. l i e was united in marriage to Elsie Brown , daughter of W i l l i a m and A u r i l l i a (Chase) Bn^wn, Sept. 20, 1863, in L i t t l e Va l ley ; she was born Oct. 19, 1846, in Great Va l ley . Seven chi ldren were given to this un ion , J o h n , W i l l i a m , A r t h u r , Fred , F r a n k , Grace, and in fant , <lec. A f te r years of fa i thful comi)anion-ship the wife and mother pas.sed to her reward J u l y 29,1891. Wlien the Civ i l War broke out , Com. Putnam was engaged in farming in the town of F r a n k l i n v i l l e , N . Y. He knew his duty and he did i t ; enter­ing the ranks of Co. I L I d l t h N . Y. Sept. 24, 1864, at F r a n k l i n v i l l e . I n Nov. , 1864 he was siek with i l iarrhea at Chat t . for three weeks, and in spring of 1865 was in hos­pital on David's Island wi th measles for hmr wmdcs, then sent to Bo-chester, thence to A l b a n y , and was discharged . In ly 25, 1865. hardserN^ice was on the March to the Sea; he endured privations (d' the camp and daiiger.s of the lield w i t h t h e o i i r a g e and determination of a fa i thful soldier. Once he was out on a forage alter sweet potatoes and pork; the rebels fired on them hut the boys gave the rebels all they wanted and got away w i t h o u t great loss. Grace Howard became liis second wife Nov. 10, 1891, at E l l i c o t t v i l l e , N . Y . He is a farmer, an iionoretl member of Henry V a n A e r n a m post of E l l i c o t tv i l l e , a re­spected citizen and k i n d neighbor.

Son of Amos and Rebecca Baker Pe t t i t , was born Dec. 31 , 1839, m Tonawanda, N . Y . , and on the same day of his marriage, .Vug. 12. 1862, enlisted as a private of Co. A , 154th N . Y. V. I . . 2d B r i g . , 2d D i v . , 11th A . C , and in due time was made sergeant of the ambulance t r a i n . H i s wife, Sabra Simonds, is daughter of O.shion and Laura K i l b u r n Simonds, and was born June 18, 1841, in F r a n k l i n v i l l e , N . Y. Whi l e in hospital at Fair fax he wiis granted a 30 days' furlough and returned prompt ly at end of t ime. June 11 , 1865, at Bladensburg, M d . , he was given his honorable discharge. His brother George, see record, and the wife's brot l ier J u s t i n Simonds, of 112th N . Y . V . 1 . , was k i l l e d at F t . Waggoner. Com. P e t t i t is the leading hardware merchant of E l l i c o t t v i l l e , a member of V a n Aer inun post. He has ne­ver applied for a pension.

Comrade Rowland relates this story: '^Comrade Esley Groat and mysel f were going over the mountains w i t h a l i t t l e mule laden w i t h corn which we intended to have ground at the m i l l ; i t was a very tough ascent and we got pre t ty well discour.vged; at last Groat piped up, *Tlie Book says, they went into E g y p t to buy corn, but by G — d we're going to get this ground . ' " Juno 1 1 , 1865, at Bladensbnrg, he was discharged from his enl istment. The last year of his service was spent at H d q t r s . of 20tU A . C. as painter. Son of Charles and Mary Whi tney Sherman was born Nov. 3, 1846, in E. As i i f o r i l , N . Y . , and was engaged in farming when \\v. was enrolled as a private of Co. D , I b d t h N . Y. V . 1., 2d B r i g . , 2 d Div . , 20th A . C . Sept. 9, 1864, at E . As l i f o rd . l i e fought at Savannaii , campaign in the Carolinas, Snow H i l l and Bentonvi l l e , and was w i t h Shei inan to the Sea. He was on a detail to get wagons through the S. C. swamps, work ing in the water five days w i thout sleep; lie took a severe cold in his liead, catarrah and deafness resul t ing . W h i l e before A t l a n t a , he was sent back to tiie hospital but was w i t h his regiment in three days; he was nearly captured once while foraging for sweet potatoes, the rebel cavalry swooped down upon t l i c m , but our boys got away with their p lunder . The latter j iart of his service was spent in the wagon t r a i n , receiving his honorable discharge June 11, 1866, at Bladens­burg ; he returned home and Oct. 11 , 1866,.was married at E. As l i f ord . N . Y . , to M a r i o n Headley, daughter of Os'*arand E l v i r a (Davenpor t ) Headley; she wavs horn Maiy 3, 1847, at E. As l i ford ; two ch i ldren Imve graced their home, Fred and Helen (Myers ) . Charles W. Sherman, a brother , was in 116th N . Y . V . I . , wounded in arm at Port Hudson
