So what does the Erie Zoo mean to you?Ask 100 different people and you’ll no doubt get 100 different answers. It seems that the Zoo is a part of everyone’s life at one time or another.

You may have childhood memories of visiting the Zoo with your family or school. Perhaps you volunteered or worked at the zoo as a teenager. Or maybe you took a class at the Zoo that inspired you to a career in science or art.

Does your son or daughter…or grandchild…have a favorite animal that you always go see first? Or do you and your spouse attend one of the Zoo’s special events each year, such as GalapaZooza and Zoo Boo?

That is what’s great about the Erie Zoo. It means something different to each of us, and that something often changes as we journey through life. The Zoo is part of our community, a part of our families, a part of our lives.

In our 2012 Review we’re delighted to share just a few of these stories. We are also very pleased to recognize all of those who so generously supported the Erie Zoo in some way this year.

“We discover something new each visit.” Cadence Waychoff knows quite

a bit about the Zoo’s animals. And her favorite is Ollie, the playful baby orangutan.

“It’s usually our first stop each week when we visit,” said Cadence’s grandmother, Elaine Brady. “She seems to have a special bond with the little guy...it’s like they are growing up together.”

Elaine noted that she has been bringing Cadence to the Zoo regularly since she could walk.

“While we have fun each time we’re here, we’ve also learned so much about the animals in the Zoo School program,” said Elaine. “Cadence can tell you what each animal likes to eat, which ones like water, why their fur is different colors and more. The Zoo is really a wonderful classroom for her and for me.”

“The Zoo is a part of our exercise and social calendar.”

When Pat and Frank Surrena were planning for retirement, the Erie Zoo never really came up in their discussion.

“We’ve been a part of the Zoo’s Senior Walkers Group for three years now and it has been a lot of fun,” said Pat, who retired from the local welfare office. “We walk twice a month through most of the year and really enjoy watching the seasons change at the Zoo. The flowers are especially beautiful as they blossom throughout the spring and summer.”

Pat explained that she and her husband, who is retired from GE, are among nearly six dozen seniors who participate in the walkers program.

“You can walk any time of day, on your own or with the group,” added Pat. “We like that there are plenty of places to sit and rest when needed and we can take our granddaughter along as well. Maybe everyone’s retirement plan should include a zoo!”

“The kids don’t even know they’re learning.”

For Kim Bargielski, the Erie Zoo is an important component of the homeschool lessons she prepares each week for her five children, ages 2 to 12.

“The Zoo’s homeschool program is amazing…combining science, art and reading with plenty of animals and fun,” Kim remarked. “The group meets once a month at the Zoo but the kids and I visit in-between as well. For my children, the Zoo has been a critical component of their education.”

Kim added that the Zoo Homeschool Group is geared toward students in kindergarten through eighth grade and that there also are classes for pre-school children.

“My own kids have always loved the Children’s Zoo. There are so many interactive elements there, both inside and out,” said Kim. “Whether in spring, summer or fall, the Zoo is our classroom!”

“Our members can’t imagine not having the Zoo in our community.”

The Kiwanis Club of Erie has been around for a long time, nearly 96 years. And for most of those years, there has been a zoo in Erie.

“Our club is committed to changing the world one child and one community at a time,” explained Cathy Szymanski, president of the local chapter and governor of the Kiwanis Club of Pennsylvania. “Our partnership with the Erie Zoo is a perfect fit for our organization and our members.”

Cathy admitted that she might have influenced the Kiwanis Club’s sponsorship of the hanging baskets on the Children’s Zoo bridge.

“Of course, our members and their families love the animals, but the gardens and flowers at the Zoo also are a delightful part of the experience,” Cathy noted. “I have over 300 orchids at home and we have other members who also enjoy gardening so when the Zoo told us about the need for the hanging baskets we immediately said yes.”
