ZONE SUBSTATION PROJECT ISSUE 1, NOV 2014 Welcome to the Metro & CBD Security of Supply Stage 2 newsletter. In this edition we look at the Waratah Place Zone Substation Project. The project will improve the capacity and security of power supply to the Melbourne Central Business District by decommissioning and demolishing the end-of-life W Zone Substation (W ZSS), located at 24 Heffernan Lane and constructing a new, modernised Zone Substation named WP (WP ZSS) in its place. The project comprises four phases: • W Relocation - Relocation of existing electrical infrastructure within W ZSS (2014/2015). • W Demolition - Demolition of the existing W ZSS building (2015). • WP Rebuild - Construction of the new WP ZSS building (2016). • WP Zone Substation - Installation of new electrical infrastructure within WP ZSS (2017). WHERE ARE WE NOW? Works for the W Relocation phase have commenced and are currently underway. In order to meet the electrical demand within the area, the load currently served by W ZSS is being temporarily ‘transferred’ to surrounding zone substations within the CBD by cutting and jointing of the sub-transmission (66kV), distribution (11kV), low voltage (415V) and communication (optic fibre and supervisory) cables connected to W ZSS. This requires extensive trenching and conduit installation works in and around the intersection of Lonsdale Street and Russell Street. Works within Lonsdale Street and Little Bourke Street between Swanston Street and Russell Street are also required. WHERE TO NEXT? Sub-transmission (66kV) jointing works in Russell Street are underway and are scheduled to be completed by mid-December. These works involve jointing two different cable types, Cross Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) and Fluid Filled (FF) cables, requiring extensive planning and specialist expertise. PROJECT MILESTONES • Waratah Place ZSS Project planning commenced 13/05/2013. • W Relocation works commenced 12/06/2014. WHY ARE THE WORKS TAKING PLACE? These works are a part of a major project to ensure the security of power supply to the CBD and inner suburbs. We thank customers and the community for your understanding while these important works are carried out. Traffic conditions in your area may be affected and we will attempt to minimise any disruptions. The existing W Zone Substation located at 24 Heffernan Lane was commissioned on 1 st May 1937. It was the second zone substation in Melbourne. Due to the building’s age there is substantial structural damage and water ingress is significant. ZONE SUBSTATION PROJECT

ISSUE 1, NOV 2014

Welcome to the Metro & CBD Security of Supply Stage 2 newsletter. The project comprises four phases:

• W Relocation - Relocation of existing electrical infrastructure within W ZSS (2014/2015).

The existing W Zone Substation located at 24 Heffernan Lane was commissioned on 1st May 1937. It was the second zone substation in Melbourne.

Due to the building’s age there is substantial structural damage and water ingress is significant.
