Harvey Levin (seated) presents Endowment Trustee Peter Elinskywith a contribution which brings the Barbara Levin Memorial Fund toover $25,000, enabling IRS to create a permanent endowment inBarbara's memory.

Remembering the Past...Providing for the Future

Twenty-five years ago, TRS founding member andPast President (1966-1968) Harvey Levin lost hisbeloved Barbara to cancer. A devoted wife, andmother of their three young children, Barbara wasalso a very active member of our Temple, serving inmany roles, including President of Sisterhood from1971-1973.

A memorial fund was set up at the Temple inBarbara's name, and over the years, Harvey andmany friends contributed generously to providevarious furnishings for the sanctuary. Our beautifulTorah Stand and the Ncr Tamid (Eternal Light)were both provided through the Levin Fund.

Despite his previous generosity, Harvey felt hewanted to do more for the Temple and more toensure that the fund would be permanent. He hasthrough recent contributions, created a designatedfund in the TRS Endowment and has made acommitment to contribute additional funds eachyear of his life. Because he feels so strongly aboutthis special fund, he has taken steps now to makesure that our Temple benefits from his contributionsafter he is gone. Upon his passing, funds will beallocated from his estate and the fund will berenamed the Harvey and Barbara Levin MemorialFund.

Harvey has allowed us to share this story with you,not to "toot his own horn," but to encourage othermembers to provide for the future of our Temple insimilar ways as they make their own financialplans.

We salute you Harvey! And we encourage otherswho might like to follow Harvey's wonderful

example of charitable giving to TRS to contactTemple Administrator Judy Seiff, who willwork together with you and our EndowmentTrustees. Endowed funds provide income forthe Temple, while the principal is retained inthe Temple's investment portfolio. If you wantto give a gift that keeps on giving to the Temple, this is a fine way to accomplish your goal.

Klezmer Shabbat Brings The House Down... Literally.

The Temple shook June 2 during Klezmer Shabbat! Well, it might have been from the torrentialthunderstorm that caused a tree to crash through the Religious School office just prior to the startof the service. Or, it could have been from the awesome adult and junior choir singers! Eitherway, it was quite a service. Thank you to all the participants who endured the hot, dark, sanctu-ary to sing the liturgy for which they had prepared so well. For those of you who missed it,we're going to repeat the service - this time with air-conditioning and lights (hopefully) - onFriday, August 25 at a special time: 7:30 pm. Don't miss this rockin' Shabbat - Klezmer style, aswell as Dr. José Bowen's musical story. This will be the last of our summer services. We hopeyou will enjoy the informal nature of summer services: piano accompaniment, congregationalsinging, and a story each week. A number of congregants and special guests will be helping outwith the singing this summer; come and sing along!

1cffEi I Lvi'El/EWIIH fl1IIIAs the summer season approaches, we at the Temple, want to wish all of you a healthy and happy Julyand August. Hopefully, the weather will be cool, the mosquitoes few and the barbecues delicious. Wehope too that your summer will provide you and your family with some especially fun opportunities toexperience your Judaism. We thought we would share some of our favorite ideas for making thissummer fun and Jewish.

1. Come to the Temple on a Friday evening with a picnic. Eat outside under our apple trees on theside of the building. Bring candles and flowers. Join us for our informal summer services at 6:45 pmafter (or before) your meal.2. While away on summer vacation, seek out the synagogue in your vacation town. Go to servicesthere. Bring us home the things you liked. Give us some new ideas to incorporate into our service.3. Make a mitzvah chart for yourself and your children. See how many mitzvot you can fulfill in twomonths.4. Visit the TRS Library and pick out a few Jewish books to keep you busy on the beach.5. When the rainy days come and everyone is stuck in the house, rent a Jewish video. Consider TheFrisco Kid, School Ties, Fiddler on the Roof or Exodus. Movies lead to great family discussions about ourtradition!6. Host a Saturday night Havdalah party. We'll be happy to help out with the details for this short, yet beautiful and meaningful service.7. Consult your mother, grandmother, the TRS Sisterhood or Nursery School Cookbooks or any otherJewish cookbook and make a traditional Jewish food. Share it with your friends and explain where therecipe comes from.

These are just a few ideas to keep your Judaism on the front lines of your summer plans. Please call usfor more specific ideas. We would love to help make your summer fun and Jewishly fulfilling.

Enjoy your summer!

Religious kh 00/From The Educator...

The weather is steamy outside (and inside toosometimes) as the summer wears on. I am surethat Religious School is far from your minds...but that's what I am here for! Just a quick noteto let you know that the Religious School officeis up and running all summer long. While weare each taking some vacation at different timesduring these few months, the office remainsopen for business. We are busy watching thenew building go up, planning for our move (inthe winter) and figuring out how to make thisyear the best ever. There will be lots of new andexciting programs in school this year... so besure to watch for details. Additionally, this is atime when we need your help. Many of you areaware that finding teachers is one of the mostdifficult tasks. (Those of you who are wait-listedfor your section because we don't have theteachers yet are most keenly aware of thedilemma.) We are still looking for teachers forthis coming school year. We need Jewish studiesand Hebrew teachers (the Hebrew we learn inour school is prayerbook Hebrew). Weespecially need people with Sunday and 4:30Wednesday availability.

We are not alone in our search. There is aJewish teacher shortage across the communityand across the country. The professionals in theJewish education world are trying to figure outwhat to do about it. In the meantime, we havekids registered for school who need loving andcaring people to help make Judaism importantto them. I believe that Rodef Shalom has thestrength to fix our own problem of findingteachers. If you have ever thought aboutteaching, now is the time to step forward.Remember... we never send you into theclassroom unprepared or lacking materials. And, there is lots of support from the office andfrom co-teachers. If there is a will, there is away. I am convinced that we can build one ofthe strongest schools by choosing faculty fromamong our own ranks. If you would like to beconsidered for one of these fabulous classroomopportunities or you know someone whowould be a great teacher, please call the

The Temple is now 38 years old and has over 1,100families. As TRS moves into the 21 century, weneed to ensure that we continue to meet our mem-bers' evolving needs. The Temple's Long-RangePlanning Committee, which serves to assess ourTemple members' needs on an ongoing basis, iscurrently developing a five-year plan to addressthose needs. As an important input to the five-year plan, the Committee is conducting a surveyof all TRS members.

The survey is essential for us to gain insightinto members' needs, attitudes and percep-tions. The findings from the survey willenable us to understand, and consequently, plan to meet the goals and priorities of thecongregation.

The Committee has conducted extensive inter-views with clergy and senior staff and has re-ceived input from numerous Committee Chairsand members. The Committee plans to hold fo-rums in the fall to receive further input from thecongregation.

Blood Drive

On Monday, June 5, INOVA was at the Templefor a blood drive. We ended up with our high-est total of units of blood ever in spite of 7people having to cancel prior to the drive, 6deferrals, and 3 no-shows. We were able toobtain 56 units of much-needed blood and areso grateful to all who donated or tried to donateblood, those who worked at the site, those whofurnished food for the canteen and for thehospital staff, to the office staff for their assis-tance, and to the custodians for all their worksetting up for this drive. Sixty-two peopleactually showed up to donate blood and thatincluded 7 walk-ins. Please mark your calen-dars now for our next drive which is to be heldon Monday, December 11th. Brotherhood - Maze! Toy to Our July• L

Bar Mitzvah!

A New Look for Brotherhood

.

A new TRS Brotherhood, focusing principallyon attracting a new and larger core member-ship, will soon make its appearance.

Continuing efforts began almost two years agoto redefine its character. Big changes are now inthe works to provide the IRS family a differentBrotherhood organization - an organizationthat will concentrate on social activities whilemaintaining visibility within the TRS family.

The annual Purim Carnival will remain animportant Brotherhood function, but plans arein progress to invite greater participation fromother Temple organizations. The overall objec-tive is to eventually be more inclusive of variouscommittees and to eventually present a roster ofmore diverse and creative activities for TRSfamilies.

Other changes within the TRS Brotherhoodinclude withdrawing from the North AmericanFederation of Temple Brotherhoods (NAFTB)and reducing membership dues back to $18 -CHAI!! Several years ago, TRS Brotherhoodaffiliated with the national organization toexpand the monthly activities and to introducenew programs. Annual Brotherhood dues wereincreased to meet the new expense of nationalaffiliation, but Brotherhood officers and mem-bers have agreed that the cost-benefit of NAFI'Bis minimal in our current situation.

I'lcmbcrs/i/pWhile many of the Membership Committee'sactivities will slow down over the summer, somewill keep going strong.

If you are interested in joining a group of TRSmembers with similar interests to yours, considerjoining a Havurah this summer. A Havurah is agroup of five to seven "families" or individualswho meet regularly to observe holidays, enjoysocial or religious activities, and who can pro-vide you with a sense of closeness to others atthe Temple. We currently are looking for singleparents and childfree people in their 40s to joinHavurot already in formation. You can pick upa Havurah application form at the Temple officeor find out more by calling Elinor Gruber at703/790-5889.

If you are in your 20's or 30's, read about theKallah group elsewhere on this page.

If you are single and are not currently receivingmailings about singles activities, call JeanSenseman at 703/281-3061 or Deborah Miller at703/642-8161 to be put on the mailing list.Activities for singles are held monthly, evenduring the summer.

For those members who do not have children orwhose children have grown up and moved on,there is the Renaissance Club. The chartermeeting of this group met in early June for acoffee and discussion, and over 30 enthusiasticmembers showed up. If you would like to be onthe mailing list for future meetings of the Renais-sance Club, call the Temple office. (See page 4for summer event information.)

That's it for now. Look for exciting new pro-grams in the fall, including Zip Code Coffeesand Member Shabbat Dinners. Joining me as Co-chair will be Diane Pollack whose creativity, laughter and leadership are greatly welcomed. Ifyou would like to join us in creating programswhich make TRS members feel at home here, please call me at 703/237-1924. It's the perfecttime to join the Membership Committee.

r\RSLately, many of you may have re-

LLceived c-mails that read from: "EviteTRS Kallah" and might have won-

dered, "Is this another pesky computer virus?" No,it's not!!

The e-mail was from the Temple's all-encompass-ing (and high tech!!) TRS Kallah group, a groupgeared toward Temple members in their 20's &30's. The goal of the Kallah group is to create anatmosphere where people can meet and get toknow other Jewish adults, to help individualsconnect (or re-connect) to their Jewish heritage, and to draw interest to the Temple and everythingit offers. We are hoping that e-mail/evite will beone of the primary forms of communicating withmembers of our group.

Evite.com is an easy-to-use electronic vehicle(driven over the Internet) that helps to communi-cate and organize events. When members openemail from Kallah/Evite, they will be taken directlyto Evite.com to find information about an upcom-ing event. Members can access a map and direc-tions, see who is attending, add invitees/ friends orsubmit comments. When you see an Evite-messagenext time around, take the time to check it out andrespond - it's a really exciting new tool!

The first event, a Bowling Party in April, attractedalmost 30 people, and was considered by all whoattended a great success. Currently, the group is inthe process of planning a BBQ Party forSunday, August 6t1, 4 p.m. at OlneyPark in Falls Church. This is the perfectplace for a summer BBQ - we'll have food, music, games, sports activities such as softball and basket-ball, and a tot lot for children. This WILL be ourBIGGEST event yet - and a HUGE way to end thebusy summer, so, JOIN US!!! Call Michelle Sandlerto RSVP (number below). For more informationabout this group go towww.TempleRodefShalom.org or call MichelleSandler at 703/433-1456. To add your name or afriend's name to the group's e-mail database,e-mail [email protected] .

Thanks to all the families with children in ourNursery School, this year's P1 party was a hugesuccess. The silent auction and class raffle basketsincreased funds raised for the Isabel MalakieMusic and Art fund in memory of former NurserySchool music teacher, Isabel Malakie. The NurserySchool family, along with local businesses donatedfabulous auction items while families donateditems to a class basket which made for verysuccessful raffle ticket sales. We were fortunate tobe entertained by our own Chai Notes withCantor Shochet and Anita Thornton, but the realexcitement of the evening was for the children tosee their teachers and principal, Karen Simpson,in their PJ's. What good sports we have in ourstaff. A special thanks to Susan Mayman andLynn Starr who did an outstanding job in makingthis event a smashing success. .

Vatikim's 21 annual Spirit of Washington cruise brought out over 30 ofour members for an afternoon of great food and lively entertainment.

ingPresident Ellen Blalock by wearing attire promoting her "other" favoriteteam at a special barbecue in her honor!

"Klezmer Shabbat" turned out to be a real evening to remember! Thedelightful service was truly inspirational for all in attendance, despite asummer storm and lack of electricity.

The evening concluded with the traditional Wedding Service underthe Chupah,

Kings Dominion is ALWAYS a favorite destination of the TRS YouthGroup!

Arts and crafts, music, a story and PIZZA were all part of our veryfirst S-l-P-P-E-R-S program for children ages 0-5 and their parents.

. As is our tradition, June Tot Shabbat service concluded with a leisurelypicnic dinner on the Temple grounds.

WOW! What a difference a month makes! The addition is really takingshape!!!
