Ed’s letterMy children are always chiding

me for my messy handwriting

- and I'm glad because it

shows that they take great pride in

their own personal writing style. As National

Stationery Week draws closer, we can all look

forward to a chance to celebrate the written

word. In this age of 'mindfulness', surely

stationery is the ultimate way to take time out.

That's certainly the philosophy behind retail

newcomer kikki.K which brings stationery

self-improvement to the market. And it

continues to fuel the colouring

The craze for adult colouring books helped boost sales at WH Smith over Christmas by 2% - the first rise in its High Street figures in some 12 years. Deals on colouring pens have been a particular success and many stores now have an aisle dedicated to colouring books and colouring magazines. The company’s shares rose 6% to £16.84 and were the top gainers in the FTSE 350 list of leading companies as it revealed sales at high street stores open a year or more rose 2% in the five weeks to 16 January.Stephen Clarke, WH Smith’s chief executive, said sales of what the company calls colour therapy books had been “phenomenal” over Christmas. whsmith.co.uk

Charlotte Kemp talks to Filofax's marketing director JULIA LANGHEIM about the brand's move into

the notebook arena...

Q. What is the thinking behind the new notebook product development?A. With our lengthy experience within the stationery market, we could have diversified into the notebook category a long time ago. However, we didn't want to come to the market with another ‘me too’ product. We wanted to develop a range of notebooks which offer something new, with unique benefits to the end users. The design utilises our Filofax design principle of ‘flexible functionality’.

Q. What are your plans for the range?A. More fashion options, focusing on textures and patterns in line with the latest trends. Some of the newer models also have slightly adjusted features, so that they

can be easily used in conjunction with matching products within other categories.

Q. How significant are the changes from the traditional organiser to the new range of tablet cases?A. The tablet cases adopt our same design principles, but are optimised for the use of a tablet. There is a key role for paper and technology in people's lives.

FILOFAX IS GOING FOR GOLD

The store will sell a range of designer home accessories that will include stationery, gifts and children's toys and well as kitchenware and interior furnishings.

Bjørnach Eriksen, head of retail

The retailer has signed up to a 4,275 square foot store which will be situated on the upper level of the shopping centre between House of Fraser and the new restaurants by the Grade II listed Clocktower. Intu recently completed a major £40 million upgrade of the centre.sostrenegrene.com

The personal TOUCH

The social stationery renaissance driving sales for retailers

A s the name Papier implies, the fledgling personalised printing business was born out

of a passion for pen and paper.'Sending a card in the post is

still the most impactful way to express a sentiment, whether it's thank you or happy birthday - it's always better than receiving a text or email,' explains managing director Taymoor Atighetchi, who founded London based Papier Stationery just six months ago.

'We want to inspire people to send more personal and thoughtful messages on paper and make it easier than ever to do so. In a time when texts and emails dominate our phones and inboxes, we believe the pleasure in receiving something beautifully made is appreciated now more than ever before.'

The stationer creates premium personalised cards, invitations and stationery using state of the art digital printing on FSC certified Mohawk paper (324gsm) and is set for annual sales of over 100,000 pieces

with an average customer spend of over £50 a year.  Under the umbrella of ‘Design Made Personal’ it plans to add international shipping (to meet demand from America) as well as premium notebooks and personalised children’s books.

Growth has been faster than predicted at a rate of over 20 per cent each month - yet another indicator that there's a resurgence in the popularity of social stationery, meaning traditional writing paper and correspondence cards but also, increasingly, greetings cards and notelets.

Evidence of this growth is backed up by independent data from the Greeting Card Association showing a stationery renaissance: the average UK consumer sends 32 cards a year; the UK Greeting card market has been growing year on year since 2012. No other country has such a tradition of sending and receiving cards.

As an added twist, Papier speciliases in personalising

designs and this is proving to be a hugely popular service.

'Giving a personalised gift has been a growing trend over the last couple of years - at Papier we're seeing lots of customers buying stationery sets with patterns & motifs, including emojis, that are clearly personal to the recipient. We also have people asking us to create bespoke motifs for them when they want something incredibly personal. Like the woman who wanted a very specific looking brown trout for her husband who loves fishing, which we created for her.

'Personal stationery is still considered an 'everyday luxury' but one that more and more people desire as we spend hours of our day typing texts and emails rather than writing notes by hand.'

What is certain is that it’s not just stationers like Papier printing bespoke social stationery that have noticed an increase in demand.

Launched a couple of years ago, Museums & Galleries' stationery range has grown rapidly to comprise some 16 designs, with thank you cards proving to be most popular.

The colouring craze is also branching out into Colour-It-Yourself social stationery with postcards and notelets included in the new Millie Marotta range

from Pavilion Books.Another book publisher

Thames & Hudson has also recently expanded its range to include stationery and gift products that ‘reflect and build on the core values of our list’ – and this includes social stationery.

Lime Stationery and Art stocks Original Crown Mill, which has been producing the finest quality writing paper since 1870 using traditional methods of manufacture. The Original Crown Mill Writing Set scooped an award in the 2015 Stationery Awards.

Of course, what goes hand in hand with this resurgence in note and letter writing is the fountain pen. Crown has some beautiful new pens.

Also in the Lime Stationery stable, are elegant designs from the likes of Visconti and Monteverde. Over at Kaweco, there are beautiful, affordable pens that would look good on any desk.

And don't forget desk accessories that will make writing at a desk a pleasurable time-out from computer screens, tablets and phones. Notable Designs has a sleek, modern range or for a touch of fun and frivolity. Mustard’s designs have humour – like the tropical pineapple pen pot - as well as perfunctory style.

For stationery with a feel good factor it certainly takes some beating. The five journals in the new ‘Habits’ range are entitled Mindfulness, Gratitude,

Happiness, Habits and 101 Dreams and each one is designed to be interactive and empowering with weekly goal worksheets, stickers with inspirational quotes and check lists. If that is not enough to entice customers, there are also regular workshops in store where customers explore what the journals have to offer as they work with personal consultants to improve themselves.Welcome to the enlightened world of kikki.K, the global Swedish stationery and lifestyle brand based in Australia, which has just landed in the heart of Covent Garden.

Nestled between big fashion names and beauty boutiques, the newly unveiled flagship store is super stylish and beautifully laid out with a wide range of products from own-brand pens to diaries, personal organisers, desk accessories, travel wallets and handbags.

New lines are introduced every two weeks and one of the new collections, Stop For A Moment, which is also based

Charlotte Kemp visits the London flagship store of the lifestyle stationery brand now taking the UK by storm with

its stylish Swedish designs and feelgood factoraround the idea of Mindfulness, is simply but effectively displayed on a ladder-like display in white wood. The range includes colouring postcards and notebooks.

The biggest new collection Write Your Tomorrow, introducing a new colour palette of peach and a vibrant blue, two of the big fashion themes for Spring Summer, is prominently displayed near the front of the store with products arranged so that customers can pick them up, feel them and browse the features.

The colour way is finished off with rose gold lettering and metallic detailing –and the overall effect emphasises the link between kikki.K and fashion trends. Products are piled up attractively and on the shelves, one of each design is displayed, with spare units behind and extra stock discreetly out of sight in basement drawers with stylish leather handles.

Each range carries over into cards, pens and wrapping paper following through the designs. Among the constants is a travel range with designs refreshed twice a year - the current collection Resfeber features a fashionable stripe which is carried across the product range from luggage tags to passport holders and travel journals.

Pics from bottom left: New ranges are displayed at the front of the store; a built in desk showcases products from different ranges; extra products are stored in stylish drawers; a tactile shopping experience

The Cute collection is more obviously targeted at a younger Back To School or College market with fun, fresh fruit motifs carried across lunch boxes, water bottles, pencil cases and innovative products such as a notebook elastic to hold pens or adhesive notes in the shape of a pineapple.

There's a shelf of filing which is targeted at home organisation - from budgeting to household receipts – and come with plastic sleeves and dividers.

Kikki.K also regularly introduces small "injection" collections like the range for Easter, which includes an Easter egg hunt kit and cards, or the Friendship Collection which includes fun stickers books, and journals with a cat motif. There's also a small wedding collection in cream with elegant gold lettering.

An older collection called Contrast – another fashion-inspired line which combines spots and stripes - is now towards the back of the store and has a 30 per cent promotion. Pens, all own brand, are displayed in Perspex storage and ballpoints echo designs from each collection. There are fine line pens in nine colours, pastel gel pens, metallic gel pens and felt tips

The most eye-catching display device is a desk built into an alcove between the shelving to showcase desk accessories such as the copper and acrylic stapler and hole punch or the copper in-tray. On the mounted pin board, there are wall planner pages and inspirational quotes as well as sticky notes. It's so beautifully done, it's tempting to sit down and pen a letter.

If anyone knows how to style a desk, it's the founder of kikki.K, Swedish born Kristina "Kikki" Karlsson. For it was when she was looking for stylish but practical products for her own home office, that she came up with the idea for the brand.

By combining her appreciation of design

with her love of stationery, a new business was born.

From first identifying a gap in the market, Kristina’s journey took her on a buying trip around the world, as well as extensive research, which all pointed to a gap in the market. When people decorated their houses, the home office was so often forgotten when it came to style. But this was about to change.

In 2001, Kristina opened her first kikki.K boutique (that’s lower-case ‘k’ at the beginning and upper-case ‘K’ at

the end) named after her childhood nickname.

The speed at which this young business has grown, and continues to grow, is testament to her determination and self-belief. Kristina and her business have been recognised numerous times, including a nomination for Retail

Innovation in the World Retail Awards.Kristina’s love of stationery developed

early – she used to love starting the school year surrounded by new notebooks, pencils and folders - and the promise of the organisation they bring. A true stationery lover. That passion is still present today. Working with a talented design and product team, Kristina loves to channel her inspirations into gorgeous, innovative products which customers can weave into their lives to improve their everyday. Certainly, every aspect of the London store is very well thought out. At the Point of Sale, there's a final burst of inspiration with a mix of quick grab impulse buys. There's also wrapping paper, glitter tape, photo albums and interactive family planners.

More shops are planned in the UK bringing kikki.K's refreshing approach to an even wider audience.

So watch this space. kikki-k.com

Now in its fifth year, National Stationery Week is a wonderful chance to share the message that writing matters and boost stationery sales to consumers

From eye catching window displays to online competitions, retailers will be helping to create a huge buzz about all things stationery during National

Stationery Week. This annual event, from April 25

to May 1, is a chance to get across an important message – ‘Writing matters’ – as well as boosting sales by providing retailers with the perfect platform to interact with customers and share their love for stationery in all its forms.

According to YouGov research commissioned by National Stationery Week, 92 per cent of adults think that writing by hand is important and 97 per cent think it is important for children to be taught to write.

So this is the opportunity to share that message and promote the power of the pen.

Last year’s campaign generated millions of pounds worth of media coverage and retail sales, and reached over 20 million consumers in the UK with the message that writing by hand matters and has a vital part to play in personal communications in an increasingly digital world.

For 2016, a growing list of retailers are signing up to take part in this exciting

event and there’s still time to join in.

Ahead of National Stationery Week, Pen Heaven, online specialist in luxury pens, has been encouraging the UK’s writers to tell them why they love their stationery

by completing the sentence ‘I love stationery because…’

Event sponsors Sheaffer, MapedHelix, nu:notebooks and Staedtler are this year joined by BIC and all are keen to encourage a love of the written word.

The written wordpower of the

Jonathan Skyrme, general manager at BIC UK and Ireland, says: ‘We’re thrilled to be a sponsor for National Stationery Week 2016, particularly as this year’s theme sits so well with our mission to also get Britain writing.’

Kids with the Write stuff More than 7000 children entered last year’s National Handwriting Competition and this year’s winners will be announced during National Stationery Week. The competition, set up by Cambridge University Press and SATIPS, encourages a love of handwriting and celebrates individual style and flow. The entries are truly inspiring.

How to get the most out of National

Stationery Week

James Daunt who believes that a strong education is the foundation of the written word.

'Reading, understanding and creativity are all tied closely and directly linked to education. Starting right from day one, writing by hand is one of the fundamental foundations that opens the mind up to a world of discovery.'

Mr Daunt, who has been at the helm of Britain’s largest book retailer since 2011, understands the power of the written word and believes that getting closer to the written word allows you to become a part of the world in which words create.

'Tapping away at keys detracts you from the emotion and the feeling that words and sounds can create. If you’re confronted by a piece of paper and a pen, then you’re engrossed in the moment. At the time, the world is your oyster.

'For me, a blank sheet of paper is the most exciting moment!'

Brights and muted tones collideFashion trends have a huge influence on gift wrap design. The new ranges at Exaclair reflect the mode for contemporary designs which use a mixture of bright and muted tones. A stand out range is the new Flower collection, which incorporates modern, contemporary design into a traditional theme by using abstract and geometric floral patterns and understated, muted tones of pink, green and brown. The Kraft collection, meanwhile, has a more minimalist aesthetic and easily co-ordinated giftwrap style. New to children’s gift wrap are the Knight and Princess ranges, which use popular, fun and appealing cartoons and patterns to create on-trend and age-appropriate gift wrap options.Clairefontaine’s vast array of giftwrap accessories will be a selection of coordinated ribbons, bows, gift tags, as well as the ever-popular self-adhesive decorative ribbons.Kevin Wharton, marketing manager at ExaClair, says the new ranges have been developed in line with the latest trends and fashions: 'We know that contemporary designs that use a mixture of bright and muted tones are very much in vogue, and our ranges have been developed to complement these fashions.' 48 STATIONERY

stationeryWhat's hot inFashion trends, interiors - even the Olympics. HENRI DAVIS on what's influencing designers this year...

W e often read that in this digital age hand writing is a dying art so we need to ensure that the next generation is

encouraged to communicate in the written form by having exciting and innovative products to use. And from what I have seen at the shows, there is plenty around this year which bodes well for sales.

The new products being exhibited reflect strong influences coming from many other sectors including colours from interiors and fashion and a lot of design ideas from the card market as more and more card publishers start to apply their knowledge of print and graphic treatments to create stationery, particularly notebooks and note cards. This is really good for consumers because cards are very fashion led so it means that a lot of the products available are much more current and pushing print techniques and boundaries all the time which is hugely exciting for the industry. A good example of this is the stationery range available from card publisher Raspberry Blossom using very on-trend

‘Bright colours and foils will stand out on

shelves ’

wash designs with beautiful soft coloured foils as highlights. The other real positive is that because most of our greetings cards are printed in this country, it's this stationery which is giving a great boost to small run stationery printers in the UK.

One of the other influences coming from the card industry is the use of interesting boards for stationery products and we are seeing some fantastic materials being used which give stunning effects

with or without print. Hannah Dale, founder

of Wrendale Designs, commissioned a YouGov survey into thank you letter trends at Christmas which revealed that 25 per cent of parents admitted that their children sent no form of

thank you message for gifts received either hand-written or electronic, although 68 per cent of them thought they should. Hannah feels there is nothing nicer than receiving a hand written letter which says thank you for a gift received and hopes that her new range of stationery Snails and Pigtails, designed specifically to appeal to children, will encourage them to write. Hannah entered her writing set in to The

Gift of the Year awards back in January and it won its class so the retail buyers who judged the awards certainly feel she is on to something.

Not sending thank you letters might be a trend amongst children but someone is definitely sending thank you cards as this format has seen a steady growth in sales recently, particularly in a smaller size card for a quick note. Card publishers are getting in on the act here too with one of Lagoms best-selling cards being an eye catching Thank you card saying: SMALL CARD BIG THANK YOU.

I mentioned the importance of foil earlier and a range that really caught my eye at Top Drawer was again produced in the UK this time by Charfleet Bindery. The fantastic colours of materials, print and foil means that this range will certainly stand out on any retailer's shelves.

Portico Designs have been producing licensed and own ranges of stationery for retailers like Staples, WHSmith and many others in the stationery and fashion sectors for 25 years but have only started to sell in to the market in the last two years or so. The ranges available to independent

About the Author‘The Rio

Olympics means bright

pinks and yellows ’

retailers are very strong. I particularly liked their range of boxed notecards called note to self which offer a real cross section of designs from very simple and stylish with fine embossed icons to others with contemporary metallic shapes.

Humour is as important in this market as it is in cards and one publisher having significant success in stationery at the moment is Ohh Deer, using their own designs as well as those licensed from Gemma Correll. They have developed a range of great stationery formats all manufactured in the UK from notebooks in various sizes, to pencil cases and post it notes.

Licensing has been a significant influence in the stationery market for a long time now. When I started in the industry in the nineties, licensing was very focused on interior design and fabric collections with William Morris, Liberty and the V&A being great sources of inspiration. These days, card designers are very in vogue as a design source particularly for occasions or humour but I was very interested to see that Museums & Galleries have teamed by with the iconic British fashion designer Matthew Williamson and have launched a really eye-catching collection for 2016.

Many of the new entrants to the market this year are card publishers wanting to broaden their product offer and drive

bigger order values but Top Drawer also saw the well-known illustrator Laura Stoddart launch her first ranges of stationery and gifts which are beautifully detailed and made in the UK and they received a very positive reaction.

While I am enjoying seeing more and more paper stationery being made in the UK and thrilled by the investment being made in new machinery which enables great product and design innovations, there are plenty more general gift companies like Mustard, Suck

and Kikkerland offering bright, affordable and fun accessories like erasers and sharpeners which will brighten up any stationery range and make great pick-up lines to drive average transaction values, which is what all retailers are after.

And what about colouring books and pencils which drove amazing sales for

all retailers in 2016, particularly over Christmas. There are still plenty of formats being launched now. I am sure the colouring craze will be with us for most of this year but my hunch is that sales will be at a fairly steady rate now through to the end of the year.

The one thing we can be absolutely certain of this year is the influence of the Rio Olympics on our colour palette with bright electric pinks, yellows and greens and the vibrant imagery of the tropics. Let’s hope it is a long hot summer!

50 STATIONERY

‘We're constantly striving for newness’

HE'S one of the UK's leading gift designers but what are Caroline Gardner's own stationery passions and how did a small

card business grow into a lifestyle brand?SHow did your business start? The Caroline Gardner brand began rather unexpectedly in 1993, after a chance meeting with a neighbour (she had a flat tyre) who was looking for handmade cards on behalf of a Japanese gallery. Experimenting with wire and card, I met the brief with six designs. The cards were such a success, reorders quickly followed. In the early days we would put the kids in the back of the car at night and drive around London looking for likely stockists (this was before the internet after all!) and mail them samples the following morning.

What happened next? I graduated to trade shows and began picking up more orders. In 2003, the Company found its new home by the river Thames and the next few years saw steady growth thanks to partnerships with John Lewis and other household names. Some of the company’s most

recognisable designs, such as ditsy and the timeless hearts, followed which we then used to develop our exciting new gift ranges. Two years ago, we opened a store in Fulham and now sell to more than 30 different countries. Our next venture is handbags...

How do you come up with new designs? We're constantly striving for newness and aim to produce fresh new designs four times a year.

What were your stationery favourites at school?I was never that far away from a sketch book.

Do you keep a pencil case in your handbag? I have to confess to carrying one of our slim pencil cases in my bag at all times.

What item of stationery could you not live without?I'd be totally lost without my notebook (I have quite a few). And a pen of course!
