Zion United Church of Christ 816 Faraon Street
St Joseph MO 64501 (816) 232-7009
Pastorrsquos Musings
Whoever you are
wherever you are on lifes journey
you are welcome here
And he sat on his throne and he said ldquoBehold I make all things newrdquo
and he said unto me write ldquofor these words are true and faithfulrdquo
Revelation 215b
Folks at Zion frequently hear me say ldquothis scripturerdquo or ldquothis storyrdquo is just weird Weird doesnrsquot half cover the book of Revelation As a teenager trying to read the whole bible on a quiet winter morning I chose Revelation to read A practical ap-proach to reading the whole bible chose a short book read it when you have time Revelation is not too long so it seemed like a good choice Very interesting book Rev-elation I donrsquot recommend reading it in the quiet of early morning or late night Espe-cially if you have a good imagination unless you are a fan of scary movies
Revelation 21 brings us out of darkness and despair into hope and renewal We are invited into a vision of redemption and a new heaven and earth In a practical sense we begin to understand that nothing except God endures forever and that eventually everything is fixable
In 2019 may we continue to live into hope and clear vision For all that we know and see and all that we do not yet know or see we put our trust in God as we contin-ue to live into being community in church and in the greater community that we live and serve in As Godrsquos people may we practice hope and renewal in our daily lives loving and seeing all as God loves so that Godrsquos love may be seen in us and experi-enced in ways that are immediate and practical
Much Love

their time and talents to fund raise with a holiday baking event This was the first com-
mercial use for our kitchen and we hope more will follow If you know of anyone inter-
ested in renting the kitchen have them contact Bill Luce 232-5162 Our next effort will
be a series of cooking classes which we hope to have in February
The renters have moved out of the parsonage and work is progressing on cleaning and
general maintenance to ready it for future use We are looking for furniture and other
items that we can use to furnish the parsonage We currently have a queen size bed
and dresser as well as a dinning room set and hutch Please let Betty Davis know if
you have anything you would like to donate
Lastly we have more groups renting our gym and we would like for that to continue to
grow

TOTENFEST (FESTIVAL OF THE DEAD) - DECEMBER 28TH
This word if not included in many vocabularies but it represents an a vitally important aspect of our
culture It was declared a national holiday by Emperor Frederick William III in 1816 Its purpose was to
honor the many many soldiers who had been killed in the Prussian (Napoleonic) War and soon evolved to
remembering members and friends of the churches
Litanies hymns readings customs have developed through the years In parts of Germany to this day
congregations come together to go to the cemetery to remove summer debris from graves and to deco-
rate them with evergreen boughs in readiness for winter
TOTENFEST is a time to turn tears of grief into tears of hope
Last Sunday the fourth in Advent Greg played
the popular song Margie on his Shakers Chimes
The song was featured by Eddie Cantor in 1921
Among his other feats Cantor with President Franklin
Roosevelt founded the March of Dimes He was a radio
favorite
Now to Margies name She was adamant that it
was Margie As I recall she said her older brother had
selected the name and convinced their parents that
this baby sister should be called Margie
One of her favorite tales was telling how she killed
their rooster when but a little girl Seems this fowl was
mean nipping at your heels One day when carrying a
heavy iron skillet of table leftovers to feed the chickens
this rooster attacked her once again Enough Margie
whacked him To her consternation he was dead
Going to the house she was almost afraid What
now Her father didnt say much For dinner next day
her mother fixed dumplings with rooster
We miss you Margie We are blessed to have
known and loved you and to have been loved by you
