How many times do youmeasure atmosphere? Our devices are constantlyrunning. We get data from themthree times a day and evaluatethem.

How many employees aret h e r e i n t o t a l i n t h i sdepartment?

There are only 48 staffsemployed in here and thisnumber is not enough for thedepartment. What is worse, theexisting staffs working here arenot qualified to fulfill thesetechnical jobs. Among them, there are only 10 employees whocan clearly understand themethods and manipulate theequipments.

How many meteorologys t a t i o n s a r e t h e r e i nCambodia?

In total there are 25 stations.Headquarter is located in PhnomPenh and other provinces haveone station. Other stations,h o w e v e r , a r e n o t a ssophisticated as that of in here.

We took our small notebooksand pens with us to take notes.Here are our questions and theanswers;

What is the definition ofmeteorology?Meteorology is the study ofatmosphere.

What is the importance of this field of study?

There are many sectors that are dependent on the informationabout weather conditions. Weforecast oncoming weatherconditions for the tourismsectors, navigation sectors, airline sectors and media.

H o w p r e c i s e a r e y o u rmeasurements?

Since there is no room for anymistakes, our measurements are% 100 precise. The technologythat we have is up to date.

How further can you predictweather conditions? We do it for a day, a week, and amonth ahead.

How do you communicate withother stations? Is there anynetwork among stations?

Unfortunately, there is nonetwork. We use landlinephones to collect data from otherstations on daily basis.

How do you convey weatherforecasts to the sectors?

We used to inform them byphone, but nowadays we use e-m a i l s i n s t e a d . W e f a xinformation to TV stations in theearly morning.

What is the annual income ofthe department?

In fact we are supposed to getmoney from the airports butunfor tunate ly we haven' treceived any money so far. Butthe government covers all theexpenditures of the department.

Can you briefly tell us aboutyour academic background?

After the war only three of us leftmy mother, sister and I. Becauseof this I had had to work till I was

19 years old. Then I decided tocontinue my college educationin Russia for four years. In 1984,I came back and three yearslater I continued to study for myBachelor Degree in Engineeringand on a Master Degree in thesame field. When I finished, Istarted to work. Since then, Icontinued to study for my PHDand finally received it in 2000.I've been working here for 15years and I've been in thisposition in the last 10 years.

What is the gender of thepeople in the same position(director) as you?

Almost all of them are males. When I go to internationalconferences, there is only onefemale director among othersand that is me.

On the other side there was a bigbox. There were two tools in it,first one was Termogram, used tomeasure temperature and theother one was Itrogram, used tomeasure humidity. They are keptin an enclosed area to avoid theirdirect exposure to the sunlight. The next tool was to measure theamount of evaporation occurredin a day.

didn't play at that time, and Ranowas helping Mr.Gurkan with thefood. He was trying to lit the fireby fanning the ember. He didn'treally know how to do it, but Hejust did it because he was told todo so. Later on, we started toplay another kind of Khmer gamecalled "Sey". We played it alltogether and stood in a shape ofcircle. The one who couldn't get"Sey" by kicking them with footwould be punished. Thepunishment was very simple. Weasked them questions, and theyhad to tell the truth. If not, therewould be consequences

Oh, haven’t I told you yet whatkind of food we had. Guess what,it was kind of BBQ (It's barbecueactually). We had chicken andbeef (according to what Mr.Alitold us that time, the beef wasmixed with some sort of specialspicy ingredients from Turkey). The meat was grilled on longmetal bars over an open flame. Each of us took one box of rice asside dish, and we went to get themeat. First, Mr.Gurkan servedeach of us with the chicken. Wesat in circle shape (there was nofire in the middle like in mostmovies because we hadelectricity and the weather waspretty hot. Instead, there werecans of coke). After a while,

t was nearly 5 months aftergraduation day, everything ofIour school years seems to be

very fresh in our memories justlike it happened yesterday. Wemiss our good time we spent atZAMAN. We miss each otherand surely our teachers as well.We miss our trips that we used totake to various places. To cut itshort, we miss everything we had5 years ago.Although some of ushave chance to meet each other,we are still separated because ofdifferent pathways we chose inpursuit of education and career. Moreover, some of our dearfriends have already goneabroad to pursue their studiessuch as Panha (to Canada sincegrade 10), Daro (to Turkey),Eamsea (to Malaysia), Sambath (to Italy), Nivoith (to Australia),Hak Seng (to Singapore),Panhawatt (to Sigapore),andBunrath (to USA). There aresome other guys such asRatanak, Rithy, Kimvan, Bunly, and me who are willing to goabroad too. That's why on 29thDecember 2008 (2009 was only2 days away from us) we, 17students of 12B, arranged areunion party at ZAMAN. It wassuch a happy time for us. Weenjoyed it very much. Let mebriefly describe it.

First, Mr.Gurkan planned to go toKompungsoum, but since mostof us were busy with theirstudies, we couldn’t go. So wedecided to make a reunion party somewhere downtown. I leftschool (IFL) at 4:30 that time, and I went to buy 20 boxes of ricefor the party. Once I arrived atZAMAN at 5:30, the first thing Idid was to greet my teachers, Mr.Gurkan (our homeroom andphysics teacher) and Mr. Ali (our math teacher). We would like tosee Mr. Osman among us, butunfortunately, he couldn’t attendthe party. There I saw some of myprecious friends had arrivedalready and they were playingfootball. Everyone seemed to behappy to meet each other. Soly

Eamsea, who is now staying inMalaysia, started to say goodbyeto friend as he was going to leaveCambodia the following day. Then he bid us farewell and toldus "I'll miss all of you. I’m verygrateful to Zaman for organizingsuch a wonderful activity and for enabling me to get to know thesefriends. I love all of you and I'llalways remember and keep allthese good memories in myheart. We'll soon meet eachother again in the future, hopefully".

It was such sad moment, butnobody cried or even shed a tearfor that... Instead, we just keptsmiling and laughing, becausewe all are good at teasing eachother. We wanted him to feelhappy that time. We had so muchfun. As for the chicken, it wasd e l i c i o u s . We d e v o u r e deverything in our plates in amatter of minutes. Then weasked Mr.Gurkan for some more. This action repeated again, again, again and again until therewas nothing left. At last the timehas come for the beef. Wecouldn't finish all of it because wewere full as we had eaten a lot ofchicken already. But we still atemost of it. There was little left.Umm... and after the meal, wejust kept talking about the past

and other stuff we experiencedall together. Then it was time fortaking photos for memories. This time we took it in a newstyle. We lied down on the grassas the shape of letters: Z, A, M,A, N. After taking pictures, wecleared up the area that we usedand left everything as clean aswe found it.One thing is for sure, when youhave fun, u don’t realize howquickly time passes by. A fewhours passed already as winkedour eyes. As activity wasapproaching its end, we had tosay goodbye to each other andto the teachers. The best thingwas that when we left, it startedto rain, so we got wet, and all ofus rode motorbikes back homewith happy and soaked hearts. When I arrived home, and Icaught a cold (not really a cold, just didn't feel quite well). Well, that's all. Hope you all enjoyedreading it as much as I didwriting it for an hour or so.And I hope that all my friendswho are now studying abroad, after reading this, even if youcouldn't join the party, at leastyou can feel the happiness andanxiety which I tried to conveyvia this article. I hope to see yousoon enough. Bye until nextactivity.

Khmer-American Orphanagevisit (4B)On Friday 23 of January 4B classwent to Khmer-Amer icanOrphanage to deliver thedonation boxes to the orphans. Our students were very excitedas they wanted to help. Theyhelped to pack the boxes andwere full of enthusiasm. Whenwe arrived, kids were waiting for us. They were very happy whenour students performed for themand finally gave them the boxeswith rice, milk, noodles, candiesand stationeries. It was great tosee the orphans` smiles.Ourmain purpose was reached; ourstudents felt joy of sharing and

Asolidarity journeyWe made a trip to KOMAKOM-PHREA ASIA Orphanage onFriday, 23rd January 2009. Weleft the school at 10am andreturned back at 12.15pm. It wasa long journey as the Orphanagewas quite a distance away fromthe school.

There was much chatter in thebus – as any field trip calls fore x c i t e m e n t a n d f u n –irregardless of the destination! Icould only regard that as thesimplicity and innocence of achild’s mind.Give and it will begiven back to you.It is moreblessed to g ive than toreceive. You never walk awayempty when you give.On and on Icou ld quote verses thatexemplified the positives ofgiving. But the very actions andsights of our trip to theK O M A K O M P H R E A A S I Aorphanage – could not havespoken the message of solidaritymore deeply into the hearts of mystudents than any verses that Icould quote.

What a sight greeted us!Children running gleefully towelcome us and show us theirplace. There was an incessantchatter and excitement aboutthem. This time – my studentskept quiet and watched. Theyhelped carry the boxes of giftofferings that they had previouslyprepared and handed them overto the Head of the Orphanage. For the rest of the hour – we weretaken on a tour of the place. Ourfirst stop was the babies room. Itwas bare. We moved over to thelittle kids quarters – bare .Ourlast stop was the kitchen – it wasbare as well.Out of their lack andbareness – these kids and theheads of the Orphanage, filledour hearts with gratitude. We feltg r a t i t u d e a n d a d e e pappreciation for what wepossessed in comparison tothem.

We left after a while of chattingwith the kids and a rendezvous ofphoto taking with some reallychubby and cute babies. When we bade farewell, the kidssurprised us with a box full ofmangoes! We were pleasantlysurprised by their generosity.Younever walk away empty whenyou give...How true indeed!

helping the needy in thecommunity.

Giving a Helping Hand to theNeedy One’sIt is the beginning of a new year,a time when many of uscontemplate changes to improveour lives. Here in Cambodia, theywere celebrating “SolidarityWeek” last January 15-17,2009.Zaman International Schoolactively participated on the saidevent. Students, parents, teachers and staff donated anyamount to buy rice, milk, noodles, etc. Boxes wered e l i v e r e d a n d g i v e n t oorphanages.

My Grade I-B class together with4B class went to Khmer-American Orphanage. Mystudents were exposed at theirearly age on how to give ahelping hand to the needy ones.Their eyes were awaken forthose unfortunate children whodon’t have family. They saw theactual situation on how thechildren live, how they dress andwhere they slept. They even sawpoor babies and took somephotos. They also rendered asong to entertain the children. These questions kept lingeringin my mind. What will be theirfuture? Are they going to staythere forever? But on the otherside, who knows? We don’tknow what lies ahead. Maybeone of them will becomeimportant person in their countryor should I say in the wholeworld.

SOLIDARITY FESTIVAL-5AMy class were already askingwhen they are going to startpacking up the solidarity boxesand schedule to give. What anoisy “Yehey !” when theirallotted time was stated.Because they were motivated to buy the “ Whose the most packedsolidarity boxes” challenge, itwas such heart-warming to see them so energized and helpfulwith each other making theboxes, putting milk, rice, candypack, school supplies andnoodles in every box andcarrying it in pile. In just 30minutes, they had ovelwhelming 209 boxes!

On 22nd of Jan. at exactly 9 o’clock in the morning, all studentsfrom 3A class went to visit then e w f u t u r e f o r c h i l d r e norphanage at Toulkork. When wearrived there , the Director of thesaid organization together withthe less fortunate childrenwelcomed us with smiles on theirfaces. They all seemed so happyand excited to see the studentsfrom Zaman school.

Af ter a few moments ofwelcoming and greeting, thestudents helped in taking outthe boxes from the truck. Theywere so eager to carry the boxesbecause they wanted to give bythemselves to the poor childrenin that orphanage. It was really atiring day for the children, butthey all seem so active duringthat day. After we handed all theboxes, we prepared a shortprogram for all. 3A studentspresented some songs andgames. The children from thatorphanage also presented awonderful traditional dancepresentation to our students. They all enjoyed cheering andclapping their hands while thechildren had their presentations. When the program ended, ourbrothers and sisters thanked usall for our visit. My students wentback to school with full ofhappiness on their faces. Theyreally had a great experienceduring that day.

Friday, Jan. 23 came that we setout to distribute the boxes atSFODA orphanage. Though theafternoon was no doubt hot, 5Awere still excited to help carry thegoods from the truck to theorphans seat. They sang themtwo songs too which no matterthey got out of tune, their smilesand happy faces won the lessprivilege kids. They showersome candies as well before theybade goodbye which made thehosts got out from their seats andramble for the candies.

It was absolutely wholesome forthe kids to trigger their ability toextend hands to those who areneedy and a big hope and joy forthe orphans that their co-Cambodian kids care for them.As 5A always mention, “Teacherit’s always fun to help ! “

Solidarity-1C

Solidarity is one way of unitingpeople which have a commoninterest. Zaman InternationalSchool initiated a solidarityfestival to help the less fortunateespecially the needy people.

The Grade 1- C students werevery lucky to be part of thisfestival because at their veryyoung age they experiencedalready the importance ofhelping other people by means ofdonating money heartily.

The Grade 1-C students weregiven the chance not only todonate money to help but also toexperience being with thechildren they are helping in the“New Future for Children”orphanage. I could say that mystudents were very happybecause they even participatedand took turns in giving the boxes

to the children in the orphanage. They enjoyed the activity morewhen we had our short program. The orphanage’s director gave ashort message. Though it wasjust a short message, I’m sure itwill remain in the mind and heartof my students forever. Thechildren in the orphanage alsorendered a beautiful dance toshow their gratitude to us. Mystudents were astonished by thedance. My students alsovolunteered to dance during theprogram to share also theirtalent.

I would like to thank the parentsof my students for helping usrealized this activity and mostespecially for allowing them toexperience and enjoy sharingwhat they have to the poorchildren in the orphanage.

Solidarity Campaign-Kolap-421st January, 09 is a memorableday for many of our classmatesof 2A. On that day, we visited anorphanage named-kolap-4 toexpress our solidarity with theparentless and disadvantagedchildren there. And at the sametime we learned that howfortunate we are that we got ourparents and how important theyare to us. We can enjoy goodlives with better school, bighouse and nice family car and onthe other hand, those orphans orchildren of disabled parents areliving on others’ mercy but theyare struggling hard for thebetterment of their lives.

We started from our schoolcampus at 9:00 am and shortlywe reached the orphanage atk o l a p - 4 ( s a n g k a t t o e u klaork,Tuol kork, Phnom Penh)We carried with us 75 foodpackages. The food packageswere arranged from theoutcomes of our school’sSolidarity Festival where we allcontributed .The orphanagemanager and the orphanchildren there warmly welcomedus. At the beginning we were notfeeling comfortable with thearrangement as there was noair-condition and it hot out there. But our class teachers couldmotivate us to stay together forshort time and our classroomteacher Farjana gave a speechfor all. We came to know thateven though they are not havinga good living but they are tryinghard to do well in their study sothat they can change their lives.

Brain Teaser Challenge

Indeed, I can say that thekindergarten students experien-ced another memorable, fun,and exciting event in theirchildhood lives that will linger intheir minds as they grow.A Fun Trip –Bumper Car Rides,Chicken Nuggets & CottonCandies (4C)As a reward for their hardwork, the Assistant Teachers and Icame up with the idea of treatingthe students to a day of total andcomplete fun. And what fun wehad! We departed at 9am fromthe school and made way toParkway Shopping Mall. Thekids and teachers were veryexcited. We arrived at ParkwayShopping Mall at 10am and thestudents immediately wanted tohead to the Bumper Car section.

It was a wonderful Saturdaymorning, on the 7th day ofJanuary. The kindergartenstudents were so excited ofgoing to school, because it wastheir first journey outside thecampus together with theirfamily, teachers and classmates. There were numerous numbersof students who joined the picnic, some of them used their own cartogether with their parents to goto the picnic site, and othersjoined us with our designatedvehicles. And off we go at around9:10 in the morning to proceed atSunsoben picnic groove. Whilewe were on our way, the bus wasfilled with laughter and fun, weshared food and exchangedsome ideas and stories. Finally,we arrived at the site between9:50 to 10:00 am. The kids were in a hurry going off the bus andstarted running around andplaying with their classmates. The teachers and parents alsohad the opportunity to get alongand talk with each otherconcerning the progress of thestudents in different aspects oflearning. During lunch time, most of the parents generouslyinvited us to join with them in theirlunch, it was a sumptuous andenjoyable meal, and everybodyhas been satisfied. We leftSunsoben at 1:10 in theafternoon and arrived safely inthe school at around 2:40 pm.

driving! As we were running late to headback to school, we didn’t go tothe bowling section though wehad initially intended to. Weinstead found ourselves feelinghungry for fried chicken and offwe went to Lucky Seven tosatisfy our hunger pangs! Weordered the food and waited. Inthe meantime there was a noisychatter amongst the students –the giddy excitement of havinghad such fun together still hadn’trubbed off them. Infact it stayedon for days to come! The sizzlinghot and crisp chickens arrivedand within seconds they were alldevoured! YUM.When we returned back toschool and the parents wereanxiously awaiting to ferry theirchildren back home – all weneeded to say to each other wasjust a simple ‘Thank You’ – butwhich resonates deep withemotions. The students had afabulous day of not only fun butwere able to express theirboundless energy in a positive, competitive way, strengthenfriendships, learning to shareand show considerations toothers and they learnt valuablelife skills on independent moneymanagement – making sure thatthey had balanced their moneywell for both fun as well as forfood!Yet another successful trip thatgeared towards enhancing lifeskills and Fun!

A handful of students were afraidof the hard bumps but eventuallyagreed to give it a try.And try theydid! These very students whohad initially shown reservations, were now hooked into the fun ofmaneuvering the car, avoidingthe bumps and yet, inadvertentlybumping hard on to others andsquealing with laughters ofexcitement and glee. After about3 sessions, I told the kids to stopand move over to the bowlingsection. It was going to be thelast round of car bumping – butthe students pleaded, “Teacherplease, one more time”. And yetonce again, “one more timeTeacher”. I found it hard to sayNO to the pleas of the studentsand relented to letting them haveanother final round of crazy car

In early December, we had a veryenjoyable trip to Soun Soben. It was oneof the most exciting and unforgettabletrips in our lives. We left our school at08:00 in the morning and it almost tookhalf an hour to arrive in Soun Soben. Assoon as we arrived there, we sawdifferent types of animals around whichmade us very excited, of course.

Saturday morning…We plannedto leave the school at 9 am.butwe couldn't. One of our little kidsmade us a surprise. At first hisfamily said that they would joinus, they were a bit late so wewaited them to go, it was ok.When they arrived, we saw thatall the family ready to go but our little boy was crying not to comewith us. His mom and I tried topersuade him but it didn't work sothey had to go back. It is one of the reasons why we cannot go ona trip with them It was aninteresting start for us but thepicnic was really nice. Of course we arrived a bit later thanothers…

When we arrived, most of ourparents were waiting us there. Some of them came there one ortwo hours earlier. As soon as wegot off the school van, the kidsrushed to the playgroundbecause there were differenttoys. Even if our playground ismuch nicer than it, it was verypopular that day…. There was a good restaurant so deliciousfood, too. Having these deliciousmeals by the lake was veryenjoyable. While the kids wereplaying in the playground, we

thought that it was a goodopportunity to have a small chattheir parents. Since we werecrowded we couldn't sit alltogether. Group by group wetalked with the parents, askedthem about their expectationsfrom our school and discussedhow to improve the kids. Theywere having their lunch whiletalking. Both we had a good timewith our kids' parents andshared ideas to give perfecteducation to the kids. As youk n o w p a r e n t - s c h o o lcommunication is very importantfor success. It is a good idea togo on a picnic to improve ourrelationship with parents as wellsince it can be boring to meet atschool all the time. There was a small zoo, too. We saw turkeysand ostriches there, they werevery beautiful, I mean ostrichesonly.

For the k ids i t was anunforgettable day, the parentsand teachers were satisfied, too.The kids kept on talking aboutthe picnic for one week so theones who couldn't join weresad….. We understood that weshould plan more outdooractivities for kindergartenbecause our kids like it a lot…

birds. All of them were very cute and special. Wewere so busy following and playing with them thatwe didn't feel our hunger till our teacher remindedus.

We recognized how much hungry we were with theremainder of our teacher and we immediatelylooked for a place to have our snacks. It was verynice to eat and drink together in front of such abeautiful and natural scene. We really enjoyed it.After we were finished with having our snacks, itwas time to play. We teamed up in two groupswhich were called Girls' Team and Boys' Team forthe game "Tug of War." Although we tried to playthat game for a few turns, the winners neverchanged. Boys were the winners at every turn.

We also skipped rope in a different way which wasgreat and fantastic for all of us. Lastly, we decidedto play a traditional Cambodian game “LeokKonsegn" which was the most enjoyable of all.Everybody was so happy and busy playing thegames that none of us recognized that it was timeto go back to school. Our teacher reminded usagain that we had to leave.Although we were upsetthat we had to leave that nice place, we were veryhappy too. Yes, we were very happy because asfrom now we had a very nice and unforgettablememory in Soun Soben which will make us smilewhenever we remember.
