Srinagar, August 22: In a bolt to Valley’s health sec- tor, all the hospitals here except Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medi- cal Sciences (SKIMS) lack the all- time required lifesaving vaccine anti-venom. The shortage, despite claiming so many lives earlier, continues to prevail with medical authorities seeming totally indif- ferent towards the concern. According to details reaching Sri- nagar based news gathering agen- cy Global News Service (GNS), all the hospitals across the Valley ex- cept SKIMS are without anti-ven- om which is a lifesaving vaccine. The deficiency of vaccine severely affects the patients particularly snake-bitten who have to, without any choice, reach SKIMS, Soura, which is the sole hospital where some Anti-Venom vaccines are available to cater entire Valley. “There are so many people who die from venomous snakebites as such people, though living in re- mote areas can’t make it to SKIMS on time,” Farooq Ahmad, who worked at Help Poor Voluntary Trust told GNS. He said the toxins in the venom of snakes like cobras and Kraits slowly paralyze their victims, who ultimately die of suffocation. “A child from Chitragul, Anantnag was bitten by snake last week. He was shifted to Sub-District Hos- pital Anantnag but due to the ab- sence of life saving vaccine in the hospital he was shifted to SMHS Hospital, Srinagar and later to SKIMS, Soura”. The bite of a cobra or any other dangerous snake can paralyze its victims. It is estimated that more than 75 percent of patients in In- dia who die from snakebites never make it to the hospital. When contacted Medical Super- intendent, SMHS, Hospital Nazir Ahmad Chowdary said: “As of See Vaccine on Pg. 11 Handwara, August 22: Terming yesterday’s peace march by the people of Kishtwar as a befitting reply to the communal and divisive elements, the Minister for Medical Edu- cation, Youth Service and Sports, Mr. Taj Mohi-ud- Din today said that yester- day’s developments would further unite people from all communities in the State. Addressing a public meet- ing here today, the Min- ister said that people of Kishtwar have shown the way to the people of the State and the country that the solution to all our prob- lems lies in unity and col- lective efforts. He hailed the people of Kishtwar for this, saying sanity pre- vailed upon them and they rejected the nefarious de- sign of communal, fascist and divisive forces. Appealing all political par- ties to play a positive role for the development and prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Taj said time has come when we should stop dividing people in the name of religion, region and caste. “We should try to work for the develop- ment and prosperity of people rather than creat- ing divisive societies”, he maintained. The Minister said the State has suffered immensely during the past two de- cades or more and it can- not afford more bloodshed, hatred and destruction. He said people of Jammu & Kashmir want develop- ment, jobs, better road con- nectivity, healthcare and education and not disor- der, confusion and catego- rization of people based on caste, creed or colour. On the development of Kupwara district, Mr. Taj said many centrally spon- sored schemes are under execution in the district which are set to change the developmental profile of the district. The double storey Community Centre was constructed by Tourism Department at a cost of Rs. 1.20 crore, having all modern facilities to or-ganise different social functions in the area.

He said under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister, Omar Ab-dullah the developmental process especially in hitherto unattended and rural areas was revital-ized by implementing innovative programmes and policies adding that improvement of basic amenities across the State remained a top prior-ity of the government.Mir said peace and whole hearted cooperation from people is a must for prosperous J&K adding that people should re-main vigilant against divisive elements whose sole motto has always remained to create wedge between communities on the basis of religion, region or caste for their personal interests.

The Minister urged the people that they should elect proper and honest representatives to represent them in the State Assembly and local governance institutions for highlighting and mitigating their developmental needs and other issues. He said Jammu and Kashmir is mini India, where people of different religions, caste and ethnic groups live together and main-taining their unity is the prime duty of all public

representatives. Mir said that late towering leaders like for-

mer Prime Ministers late Indira Gandhi and late Rajiv Gandhi who sacrificed their lives for the cause of Nation strengthened and kept the country united, adding that late Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah not only strength-ened the communal harmony and brotherhood in the State but awakened the people about their rights and brought J&K on the path of de-velopment and prosperity. He said “We should also follow the foot prints of these great lead-ers for upholding the unity and integrity of the country and defeat the communal forces who are hell bent to spoil the conducive and peace-ful atmosphere of the State”.Mr. Nasir in his address while highlighting the developmental achievements of Omar led Government during last over four years, said that upgradation and improvement in basic amenities besides de-velopment of core sectors for peoples’ welfare received focused attention in the State. He said that coalition government paid equal attention on the socio-economic upliftment of the people in all the three regions. He said being the public representative it was his foremost duty to work for the welfare of people of his Constituency. He said lot has been done for the development

of all areas but yet there is a need to do more on the development front to make Amirakadal Constituency a model one. Have a salmon fish dinner. Snack on a handful of nuts. Pour a dash of olive oil in your salad. And bite into that sinister choco-late. Now you can do all this guilt-free! All these foods help in fight-ing bad cholesterol. According to the American Heart Association, 'You can reduce cholesterol in your blood by eating healthy foods'. So, here we are today with our list of top 10 cholesterol fighting foods. Oats: If you change your morn-ing meal to oats then you can do your cholesterol level a whole lot of good. Do note that two servings of oats can lower LDL cholesterol by 5.3% in only 6 weeks. Essential-ly, oats contain a substance called beta-glucan which absorbs bad cholesterol. Red Wine: Here's yet another rea-son to toast to your health. The red grapes used in the manufacturing of red wine have an important effect on cholesterol levels. Two glasses of red wine in a week can do you a whole lot of good. Salmon and fatty Fish: Full of Omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is a natural health wonder, which helps in keeping heart conditions

such as heart attacks, stroke and high cholesterol levels at bay. Fishes such as salmon, sardines and herring help in raising good cholesterol levels by 4%. Nuts: Mono-unsaturated fats (found in nuts, seeds etc.) have the lowest fatty acid molecules and are the best of the three fats, namely poly-saturated fats, satu-rated fats and mono-unsaturated fats. Nuts are the best way to get those required healthy fats into your body without feeling guilty. Since the fats that come from nuts are natural and are not chemically processed, this makes them heart healthy, filling, and nutritious options. Beans: Excellent for the heart, ½ a cup of beans added in our diet (in the form of any dish or soup), helps in lowering cholesterol lev-els by 8%. You should try black, kidney, or pinto beans; each one of them supplies about one-third of your day's fiber needs. Tea: Tea has antioxidants and less amounts of caffeine than cof-fee. An eight-ounce cup of coffee contains around 135 mg caffeine; tea contains only 30 to 40 mg per

cup. Tea helps in protecting your bones because of the presence of phytochemicals in them. It is also a great defense against LDL cho-lesterol levels. Chocolate: Chocoholics can cel-ebrate with a healthy dose of dark chocolate as it is full of antioxi-dants and cholesterol-reducing properties. According to a Span-ish study published in 2010 in the "Journal of Hepatology,", "the

antioxidants in dark chocolate re-duce the damage that can occur to blood vessels, which can further threaten the health of people with cirrhosis. The dark chocolate can help prevent the blood vessels in the liver from rupturing". Medical experts suggest that munching on 100 grams of chocolate every day helps in reducing the occurrence of cardiovascular mishaps by 21 percent.

So it's best you try some of the following natural remedies and get yourself some relief.Increase your intake of Vi-tamin D - A study looked at the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in 150 people with chronic musculosk-eletal pain and found that 93 per cent of patients had vitamin D deficiency! So all people with persistent, non-specific musculoskel-etal pain should get them-selves screened for vitamin D deficiency.Indulge in some music therapy - Low cost and enjoyable, music has been found to reduce the dis-ability, anxiety, and de-pression associated with

chronic back pain. It has an immediate effect on re-ducing pain, although the results are not statistically significant.Try some breathing tech-niques - To reduce pain, try some breathing tech-niques that make use of the mind-body connec-tion. These techniques inte-grate body awareness, breathing, movement, and meditation. The best thing about them is that they are safe, free

of cost and you can do them at home!Get a soothing massage - The first thing that comes to your mind when you think of a backache is to get a nice massage. Massages may be effective for sub acute and chronic pain. What's more, they reduce anxiety and de-pression associated with chronic pain. In fact, massage therapy is the most popular thera-py for low back pain dur-ing pregnancy.

Yoga during pregnancy helps relieve pain

Many doctors and health professionals are encour-aging pregnant women to do yoga, as it helps in-crease their strength and relieve pregnancy discom-forts. This form of exercise is favoured by some of Hol-lywood's newest moms like January Jones, Hilary Duff and Pink. "Yoga during pregnancy helps a woman increase her strength and flex-ibility, even as her body goes through the dramatic changes of pregnancy," Fox News quoted Mary Barnes, director and owner at Yoga for Two in New York, as saying. The postures yoga offers

may also prepare women for childbirth and help relieve discomforts, such as back pain and swollen ankles. Apart from building strength and relieving pregnancy discomforts, it

also helps increase pain tolerance. As yoga focuses on length-ening the breath, this cre-ates endurance, calms the mind and can increase a woman's pain threshold during labour.

Like human beings, foods can also bring out the best in each other, nutritionally speaking. Read on to find out who should date whom for your good healthYou already know a lot about what foods are good for you. But there's more to healthy eating than just that. Sometimes, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And this especially true for some food combinations, even if they sound weird when you first hear about them. Dietician Sheela Tanna tells you how to pair food to unlock the benefits of individual ingredients.Turmeric and salmonTurmeric has anti-inflammatory and heal-ing properties. Salmon is low on carbohydrates and high on pro-tein. When the two are combined, the properties of Omega 3 fatty ac-ids present in salmon get a boost and it guards the nervous system against the effects of ageing. It also

increases the level of HDL (good cholesterol) which improves heart health by keep the arteries clear of bad cholesterol. The combination is also believed to slow tumour growth by keeping the cancer cells from multiplying.Whole grains and onions Whole grains, such as maize, brown rice, barley and wheat contain iron and zinc in differ-ent quantities. The two miner-als are absorbed by the human body more easily in the presence of sulphur compounds present in onions - which is also what makes you cry when you slice them.Beans and greens Beans are rich in proteins and iron. When paired with veggies rich in Vitamin C such as spinach, sprouts and potatoes, it aids weight loss. "Your body uses three times more energy to metabolise proteins than carbs and fats," says Tanna. "Vitamin C

rich foods do not aid weight-loss directly. But they have water soluble nutrients which make them very low calorie foods. The combination of beans and veg-gies won't let you gain those ex-tra kilos."Also the iron content of beans gets better absorbed in the presence of Vitamin C from vegetables.Tomato and olive oil Tomatoes contain Vitamin C and the antioxidant lycopene in sub-stantial quantities. This antioxi-dant lowers the risk of cataracts, osteoporosis, cancer and the ef-fects of ageing. Olive oil, also rich in antioxidants, promotes the for-mation of HDL (good cholesterol) in the body. Lycopene gets better absorbed in the presence of olive oil and is highly beneficial for the heart. It purifies the blood and dis-solves gallstones. The combo also boosts liver function of protein synthesis and detoxification of the

body. It's believed to reduce ef-fects of hypertension.Broccoli and mustard Broccoli is a good source of Vitamin C, antioxidants and a compound called sulforaphane. This compound exhibits anti-can-cer and anti-diabetic properties. The absorption of sulforaphane is better in the presence of my-rosinase, an enzyme present in mustard. The two combat bacterial infec-tions in the urinary tract, excre-tory system, digestive system and the colon. Iron is part of blood cells in the body and carries oxy-gen from the lungs to muscles and organs. Zinc helps in healing wounds. Antioxidants and Vita-min C present in onions also fa-cilitate the iron absorption from whole grains.Whole grains are also rich in Vitamin E which when combined with Vitamin C become beneficial for the skin.

Top 6 fats that lower cholesterolOften given a bad name, fats can be a good addition to anyone's daily diet. In fact, one should never, complete-ly, cut good fats out from ev-eryday meal plans as they are very essential for your body. While some bad fats may pose grave risk of cardiovas-cular diseases, others may shield your heart. An im-portant source of essential fatty acids and concentrated energy, fats are full of fat-soluble vitamins, they assist in cooking too and also keep hunger pangs at bay. Today, Delhi-based Diet Consultant Munisha Bhanot tells us about the top 6 fats that help in lowering cholesterol. Sip red wine, instead of cocktails. Red, blue, green cocktails look tempting, but these drinks are full of calories. So, if you are health conscious, then avoid cocktails. Instead, you can sip red wine because it is full of antioxi-dants, which are helpful in prevent-ing different types of cancers. And an even red wine has saponins, which help in lowering bad cholesterol LDL. But intake of red wine should be limited. The American Heart As-sociation recommends that you limit your daily intake to two glasses (for men) or one glass (for women). Best oils for low-cholesterol cook-ing. All the oils and fats have some good qualities for our health. So we should not stick to one type of oil or fat for cooking. We should follow rule of rotation of oils. For example, in one month you can use sunflower oil and in the next month you can use mustard oil. Or you can even use different types of oils in your meals like one vegetable in sesame oil and another in mustard oil. The low cholesterol cooking oils are olive, canola, sesame oils and mustard oil. Good quality oil is also found in avocados and avocado oil, nuts and their oils, corn, cottonseed, and safflower oils; sunflower seeds

and sunflower oil; flaxseed and flax-seed oil; soybeans and soybean oil; tub margarine and soft spreads; and seafood. Monounsaturated fats are the health-iest fats. There are two types of cho-lesterol - one type of cholesterol clogs our arteries, it is known as bad cho-lesterol or LDL and other type helps in removing these clogs, it is known as good cholesterol or HDL. Monounsaturated fats decrease your total blood cholesterol but maintain your HDL (good) cholesterol. Mono-unsaturated fats, therefore, help lower the risk of heart diseases. Olive oil has 75% of monounsaturated fat. Examples of monounsaturated fats are macadamia nuts (80% of fat is monounsaturated), avocados (71%), almonds (70%), canola oil (59%), and peanuts and peanut oil (46%). Other sources are almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, natural peanut butter, pecans, pistachios, sesame oil and sesame seeds. Polyunsaturated fats may also be somewhat healthy. A polyunsatu-rated fat has good cholesterol but it decreases your total blood choles-terol by lowering both the LDL (bad) cholesterol and the HDL (good) cho-

lesterol. Because of this reason we should use them in moderation. The good sources of polyunsaturated fats can be found in corn oil, may-onnaise, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flaxseed oil, hempseed, hemp-seed oil, soybean oil, and pistachios. Liquid plant oils should be your best bet for daily use. It is general ten-dency to use butter or ghee for cook-ing and baking. But butter and ghee are high sources of bad cholesterol or LDL. They increase risk of heart diseases by clogging your arteries. So, to pre-vent this we should use vegetable oils like soya oil, sesame oil, canola, ol-ive, mustard oil etc. for cooking and baking. These oils have high level of good cholesterol HDL and lower our LDL levels. Meat fats also help in lowering cho-lesterol. However, it is important that one reduces the fat content of meat. There are many quick ways to reduce the fat content of meat.First, always buy lean cuts of meat. Before cooking, remove and cut the all visible fats for example remove the skin from chicken because there are fat deposits just below the skin.

20 Best workout snacksIf workout snacks confuse you, look no further. This is the list you've been wait-ing for - here are 20 best workout snacks, complete with calorie counts.Apples: Apples are to ba-nanas what slow carbs are to quick carbs. To elabo-rate, they give you slow release energy and are therefore, great for long workouts or if your work-out is an hour or more away. One standard issue red apple gives you ap-proximately 60 calories.Energy gels: Carbohy-drate-based snacks de-signed mostly for endur-ance events, energy gels are often used by runners, cyclists and mountaineers. These come in single snack servings and since they are meant for athletes who cover long distances, are usually high on calories for the average person.Yogurt parfait: Perfect for light to moderate workouts recovery, yogurt parfaits are just a French way of saying yogurt mixed with chopped fresh fruits. One 60 gms bowl of skimmed yogurt with one whole fruit will cost you about 100 cal-ories. Honey or cinnamon can be great natural sweet-eners at just 10-30 more calories.Energy bars: If you have no time to keep the kitchen stocked with natural work-out foods, rely on energy bars. However, be weary of the fat, carb and sugar con-tent in these snacks. The lower and non-existent these three are, the better it is. Calories differ from brand to brand. For in-stance a standard granola milk bar will be approxi-

mately 120 calories.Eggs and toast: Great as pre or post workout snacks, one or two eggs on toast will give you the per-fect carb+protein fuel or recovery benefits. Two full eggs on one toast will give you about 220 calories.Vegetable omelet: Calorie-efficient, energy-packed, and full of protein - a veg-etable omelet might be just what your fitness routine is missing. Skip the egg yolks to make it even more performance-friendly. A simple omelet with a car-rot and onion in with 1-2 whites will give you ap-proximately 90 calories.Oats: A small bowl (50-80gms) of quick cooking oats with fresh fruits like bananas, apples or pears, makes for a good snack worth about 250 calories. This needs to be prepared with water.Dark chocolate: A great antioxidant, dark choco-late is considered good for recovery after an es-pecially grueling workout. Buy dark chocolate that has low to no saturated fats (esp. Tran's fats) and fewer artificial ingredients. A 100gms cube is a good enough quantity. Calorie count defers from brand to brand, so check the label before buying.Chocolate milk: Recent studies have hailed choc-olate milk for its post-workout recovery inducing properties. Drink a glass (about 250ml) of chocolate flavored milk for a 150 cal-orie-worth post-workout snack.Smoothies: Yogurt smoothies help replenish your body after a workout

and are great for comfort. Rely on healthy skimmed yogurt and skimmed milk, fresh fruit smoothies and you'll be richer by approxi-mately 150 calories.Protein shakes: If you get all your protein require-ment (from .8 to 2gms per kilo, depending on work-out intensity) from natural foods, without eating in excess of your body's daily needs, then you're golden. If not, you need a little supplementation.Remember that the trick to the right protein shake is research and expert con-sultation. Ask your doc-tor and fitness trainer for advice. One scoop will be anything between 30 to 90 calories, depending on contents. You could also look at raw eggs and dairy natural protein shakes, if so inclined.Egg whites: Eggs are quint-essential fitness foods. Eat them before or after a workout and you'll be a happy fitness enthusiast. A couple of egg whites before and a couple or more after (depending on workout intensity), will serve you 40-100 calories of extreme goodness.Avocado: Infamous as be-ing high fat fruits, avoca-dos deserve to be let off the hook. While it's true that one whole avocado will give you 250-300 calories (except California avo-cados, which are smaller varieties), if your work-out is heavy, these will be calories well spent. On the other hand, split it into two servings, and you've still got a great snack of about 120 calories.Almonds and walnuts: Full

of good fat richness and energy powerhouses, al-monds and walnuts (about 7-12 almonds and 2-4 walnuts) can be good en-ergy suppliers. Look to get about 200 calories from here.Dried dates stuffed with al-monds/walnuts: A nice lit-tle variation for those who eat dried dates often. Sim-ply pit the dried date, and stuff with whole almonds or walnuts, or slivers. Each almond or walnut stuffed date will give you about 30-50 calories.Dried dates: Similar to figs with respect to calo-rie counts (approximately 100-150 for about 4), dried dates are performance packed. Eat these if your workout calls for every bit of energy in your body and eat them just before the workout.Dried figs: A great source of iron and roughage, dried figs are old age's best kept secret. Don't wait to hit your 50s to discover this miracle food. 2-4 dried figs are worth about 100-150 calories.Apple slices topped with peanut butter: For those who're avoiding processed cereals, spread the peanut butter over a few apple slices. Extra crunch and flavour guaranteed. This will cost you no more than 120 calories (lesser if it's just 1-2 apple slices).A slice of bread with pea-nut butter: Peanut butter packs an extra punch with its creamy nut butter and omega goodness. Government under fire over missing coal files

NEW DELHI: Government today came under sharp attack on the issue of crucial files of Coal minis-try going missing, with the Opposition alleging that it was a conspiracy to save Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the coal block allocation scam and demand-ing an impartial probe into it.

Opposition was vociferous while raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha, seeking to corner the government by demanding a statement from Prime Minister or Coal Minister on the issue.

Responding to the demand, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla assured the House that Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal will make a statement on the issue but gave no time frame.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, BJP’s Dhar-mendra Pradhan said such an incident has never hap-pened earlier and the government needs to reply.

“This is a very serious issue... Nothing can be more condemnable. This is a conspiracy... It is an attempt to save the Prime Minister,” said Pradhan, wondering if the coal department had a hand in miss-ing of files to protect the Prime Minister from any allegation as he held the Coal portfolio earlier.

Noting that the coal block allocation is being probed by CBI, Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley said, “There are three powerful targets of investiga-tion and suddenly the files are missing...the govern-ment must respond to this...Otherwise you eliminate

the evidence and then say no crime is com-mitted.

“There are three important targets of in-vestigation - the beneficiaries who benefited from coal block allocations, the screening committee which allotted the mines and the Minister, the Minister’s office and the Prime Minister’s Office.”

Terming it as a “very serious matter” and “sabotaging of the investigations”, Left parties demanded an explanation from the government and urged the Prime Minister to order an impartial probe into the issue.

BJP’s Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha Ravi Shankar Prasad said there appears to be a “conspiracy and collusion” in the case of missing files and alleged it was an attempt to protect the Prime Minister who held the Coal portfolio from 2006-09.

“There has been no response from the govern-ment on the coal ministry files which have gone missing. These files are from 2006-09 period. All po-litical recommendations of Congress leaders and cru-cial files are missing. Records of another 157 private companies are also missing,” he said.

“We are legitimately entitled to think that there is a conspiracy and collusion in this case,” he added.

Prasad sought to know if there was a conspiracy

and said in a criminal case the first step is to remove the witnesses and evidence and the files could have gone missing in an attempt to shield the Prime Min-ister and others.

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said, “At least 60 files are reportedly missing. It has come to light following the CBI investigations into the coal scam. It is a very serious matter. Many agencies, in-cluding the Prime Minister’s Office, have been in-volved (in the files).”

GJM again calls for bandh in Darjeeling hillsSILIGURI: After remaining in low

key for two days, Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) has once again come out with its usual aggressive mood warning for yet another spell of bandhs on next Saturday and Sunday in hills while de-nying any possibility of any talk to state government. On the other side, adminis-tration has also tightened its grip over the hills.

Darjeeling hills is still too far from the normalcy after devastation due to massive storm and heavy rain on Mon-day night. “Restoration of full electricity distribution scenario will take two more days,” said WBSEDCL officials. Water lines are being restored, though at gross-ly impaired pace.

But, immediately after people came of out the shock of the natural calamity, GJM supremo Mr. Bimal Gurung an-nounced about yet another spell of bandh on nest Saturday and Sunday calling it as deferment of previously announced movement step.

“There is no way remaining for any talk with state Government,” he said while criticizing state Govern-ment for not withdrawing the old cases

against GJHM lead-ers “Though it was a commitment as per the GTA agreement,” he said.

Taking own call of movement one more step ahead, Mr. Gurung has called all police officials from Gorkha community not to cooperate with state machinery. “This may impart sig-nificant effect in dif-ferent ways. On one side, police action may or may not get impaired due to the sentimental call. To avoid this, adminis-tration may think of mass transfer. But that will also cause large scale destabili-zation,” accepted a senior police official on condition of anonymity.

However, while tightening its grip over the hills police have arrested 40 GJM activists including GJM spokes-man and central committee member Mr. Binoy Tamang and Block level leader Mr. Santosh Tamang, both in connection

with old case during last 24 hour. This has taken the total number of arrest to around 750. Court has ordered 14 days jail custody for Mr. BinoyTamang.

“Even if they arrest me or Roshan Giri, the movement will go on,” said Mr. Gurung. But, “It is difficult for even him too asses the actual strength of this state-ment as a large section of the hill popu-lace has already become fade up with the chaotic situation continuing there for last three weeks,” said political observers.

Modi following Hitler’s tactics to grab power: Digvijaya Singh

Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh, who has been unsparing in his criticism of Narendra Modi, on Thursday compared him to Adolf Hitler saying he was fol-lowing the disgraced dictator in many ways to grab power.

Digvijaya slams Modi for dividing Hindu and Muslims on every issue

“I feel that there are a lot of similarities between the two as Modi is trying to follow Hitler in his bid to capture power,” he said to reporters.

Singh said that with Modi coming into the limelight, the BJP has become “tiny” in Gujarat.

In Gujarat, he said, there was no BJP, only Modi, and added that the situation was similar in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The Congress leader said that in Madhya Pradesh there was only Shivraj Singh Chouhan and in Chhattis-garh, there was Raman Singh and no BJP.

He said that one should not be surprised at all on what Modi can do to get power and added that his “dream” of making India Congress-free would never be realised.

TDP MP Harikrishna resigns from Rajya Sabha over Andhra bifurcation

NEW DELHI: TDP MP and son of N T Rama Rao, N Harikrishna on Thursday resigned from Rajya Sabha in protest against the decision to bi-furcate Andhra Pradesh.

Harikrishna, 57, said he met Rajya Sabha Chair-man M Hamid Ansari this morning and submitted his resignation. Deputy Chair-man P J Kurien informed the House that the Chair-man has accepted his res-ignation.

Talking to PTI, Hari-krishna alleged that the de-cision to bifurcate the state was taken to reap political benefit in favour of Congress in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

“By this decision, they (Congress) killed the Telugu spirit. They did it to make Rahul Gandhi next Prime Minister after the Lok Sab-ha polls,” he said.

Striking an emotive note, Harikrishna, son of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N T Rama Rao, recalled the steps taken by his late father

to keep the state united.“My father stood firmly for the cause of

united Andhra Pradesh. Now it is shattered. My conscience would not allow me to con-tinue (as Rajya Sabha MP),” he said.

The TDP leader, who had announced his resignation few days back, had alleged that the Congress leadership announced the division without resolving the crucial issues like water sharing.

2G case: Supreme Court refuses to exempt Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal as witnessNEW DELHI: The Supreme Court

today refused to exempt DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal from deposing as a witness in the 2G scam case but exempted her from personal ap-pearance in trial court and directed that she be examined by a commission in Chennai.

“No question of her exemption aris-es,” a bench of justices G S Singhvi and K S Radhakrishnan said when the coun-sel appearing for Ammal’s daughter said she is not fit to depose.

The bench said the according to a medical board report, she is unfit to de-pose as a witness before the court as she cannot travel and asked the special CBI court hearing the 2G case, to appoint a commission to examine her in the case in Chennai where she resides.

“We are satisfied that the purpose would be served by appointing a com-mission to examine her in Chennai,” the bench said.

Earlier, the apex court had on July 10 directed AIIMS director to constitute a medical board to examine whether Am-

mal is medically fit to depose as a wit-ness before the special court.

Maharashtra: Two MLAs refuse to pay toll, vandalise booths in Nashik

Mumbai: In yet another case of abuse of power caught on camera, a Shiv Sena MLA went on rampage at a toll booth because he was asked to pay up while in another case an-other MLA supported by Congress led a mob to vandalise a toll plaza against farmers having to pay the toll.

Shiv Sena MLA Anil Kadam from Pimpal-gaon, Nashik broke the computers while Con-gress-supported Independent MLA Shirishku-mar Kotwal of Chandvad, Nashik damaged the booth. The Shiv Sena MLA indulged in vandalism as he was asked to pay the toll.

Kadam claimed that since he was an MLA so he would not pay the toll and went on to threaten the women employees of the toll pla-za that he would get them stripped naked by his female relatives.

In the other incident Kotwal led his sup-porters to the toll plaza in his constituency and CNN-IBN has pictures of the shocking attack

on the plaza which was reportedly manned by all-woman crew.

He reportedly vandalised the toll plaza on the grounds that local trolleys and tractors which are exempted from paying were being made to pay.But Kotwal denied that he was indulging in vandalism but added that he will take the law in his hands the toll booth kept on charging them.“We have not broken anything. We have started a peaceful protest. We have told them that they cannot begin charging un-til they agree to our demands. It has been four years since we have asked them for an under-pass from Vadali. They approved it but have not started the construction work. We have told them that they can’t begin using poll until they start the construction. There are several people here including the toll people. If they do not agree to our demands the protest might get violent. We will take the law in our hands,” he said.

Families of Sindhurakshak crew to get ‘special’ compensation

NEW DELHI: Indicating that all 18 crew members in the ill-fated sub-marine INS Sindhurakshak have died, Defence Minister A K Antony today said treating it as a “special case”, compensation would be given to their families.

“I will ask the Navy to treat the incident as a special case,” he said in Rajya Sabha.

Antony was responding to a ques-tion whether the families of crew members, whose body could not be found so far, would be eligible for compensation as the existing law pre-scribes a seven-year wait.

The Defence Minister said eight bod-ies could be recovered till date, though in all probability, all the 18 have died.

Bodies of the eight had been sent to Naval hospital in Mumbai for postmortem. “Death

certificates of eight bodies cite extensive burns as the cause of death,” he said.

Antony said Navy is in touch with the families of the crew members on daily basis to provide help, assistance, support and coun-selling.

BJP uses ‘paid professionals’ to spread half-truths online: CongNew Delhi: Accusing BJP of using “paid

professionals to spread half-truths and ca-nard” on social media, Congress on Thursday organised a first-of-its-kind workshop to train spokespersons on Twitter, Facebook and other interactive sites to put its point across.

Young party MP Deepinder Hooda, who is likely to head a cell on digital media in AICC, charged BJP and its leader Narendra Modi with using paid professionals to spread half-truths and canard.

“Ours would be a volunteer-led ap-proach,” he said.

“Their (BJP) case is fit for those who want to use social media to spread half truths and canard… But social media can be used to spread truth. It is imperative for a political party to communicate its ideology and voice efficiently and strongly. This medium is very important in this age,” he said.

Congress MP Priya Dutt said the party would open a communication centre in all states and it would have three wings of social media, research and spokespersons.

On the absence of top party leaders like Con-gress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Twitter and Facebook despite party’s increasing thrust on social media, Dutt said it is their vision and ideas which is guiding

them.“It is not necessary to personally tweet. It is

their views and vision which will be part of our work,” she said.

Dutt said Congress wants to bring all PCCs under one umbrella so that they could speak in one voice.

Their will be inflow and outflow of informa-tion from Delhi to all states, she said.

Dutt said there should be self-regulation and there was no need to gag leaders to avoid con-troversy.

Similar workshops would be held in other states, she said.

Solar scam: LDF to list ‘evi-dence’ against Oommen Chandy

Besides seeking inclusion of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his office under the ambit of the judicial inquiry, the Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) would also insist on the probe looking at the destination of the scam money.

The LDF State committee is likely to forward its response to Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan’s letter seek-ing its views on the terms of reference of the probe in a day or two. The alliance is firm in its demand that the Chief Minis-ter should step down and face the judicial inquiry. It would reiterate its demand and is likely to make the Chief Minister’s refusal to accept the first demand the reason for it not agreeing to talks on the terms of reference.

The LDF subcommittee constituted to frame the draft terms of reference has enumerated the reasons why the Chief Minister’s ‘role’ in the scam should be inquired into.

Mr. Chandy’s own admission that he had held an hour-long discussion with prime accused Biju Radhakrishnan, the con-tentions of the main complainants, and circumstantial evidence pointing to the scam accused having had access to him or his office would all form part of the LDF’s demand for the probe against the Chief Minister.
