BEST LIBRARY IN WEST JAVA!In August 2016 the Community Library at YUM Cipanas Village was awarded Best Library in West Java Province, by the Education Department.

HELP THE LIBRARY AND EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING CENTRE TO STAY OPEN! YUM Community Library wishes to continue serving the local community for many years to come, and has big hopes for the future, such as expanding services to increase support for local parents. However, the biggest problem getting in the way of these hopes becoming a reality is funding; YUM Community Library needs ongoing support if it is to continue to provide a friendly, engaging and educational space for local children to learn and play. If you wish to help our Library and Early Childhood Learning Centre in Cipanas, West Java, go to:

Since 2012, this library has offered many educational services to local children and families. Children who visit the library benefit greatly from a variety of engaging activities, such as reading, story telling, science club, English club, arts and crafts and watching movies, all run by our wonderful librarian Agnes, together with Dessy and Heti, the preschool teachers. Daily, the library serves up to 50 individuals from the community, who come to participate in the activities, or borrow books. Local parents have been very supportive of the library, seeing it as a very safe and positive environment for their chi ldren. They deeply value the opportunity for educational engagement and are very encouraging of their children to attend.

GRAND OPENING OF the kalimantan vocational training centre

5 years after YUM committed to the Clinton Global Initiative to reduce poverty through job creation in Central Kalimantan by providing technical training, the Kalimantan Vocational Training Centre (VTC) buildings finally saw the light of day.

It has been a long journey over the years, slowly socialising the many courses that the Kalimantan VTC offers to the community of Bukit Batu, where lack of skills and high unemployment rate among youths and women in the area is a constant issue. With approximately 100 to 150 participants per month, the lack of proper facilities was hampering the project to grow. Now with 4 new buildings located on YUM’s land in KM37, the VTC can offer more diverse trainings to a growing number of participants. New trainings currently planned include: Basic carpentry, training for night guards, Hospitality, Enterprise skills, Motorbike repairs and Handphone repairs.

YUM 40th anniversary celebrationsEstablished in 1976, this year marks YUM’s 40th anniversary. Celebrations were organised to recognise all the hard work that has gone into YUM's projects over the years, and to showcase how far YUM as an organisation has come.

These celebrations were held at Sekolah Kembang on 25th September, and featured performances, a Bazaar with several stalls, and workshops, held by YUM and YUM's partners in the community. Project staff from YUM Kalimantan were also able to make it to Jakarta to participate in the day's celebrations, bringing with them handicrafts made by YUM Kalimantan beneficiaries. As this was the first large event of its kind that YUM has organised, it was an important opportunity to spread the word of YUM's work throughout the community, and raise awareness especially in people who live in Jakarta. Through the dedication of its staff, YUM has weathered many storms over the years, and has been able to survive thanks to the generous contributions of its donors. Yayasan Usaha Mulia is one of only a few organisations that has been around for this long, which is a great achievement in itself.

edutourism activities

In April, more than 50 students from Mentari School Jakarta spent 8 days in Kalimantan, working with various YUM projects such as the library where they spent their afternoons playing and teaching our young beneficiaries. Other highlights of their trip were:

Mentari School Jakarta once again put their trust in YUM and organised their Grade 9 study tour visiting and working with the YUM projects in Central Kalimantan.

For the 6th consecutive year, Jakarta Intercultural School brought close to 200 students to learn about organic farming methods to the YUM Organic Farm in Cipanas, West Java.

As we see children discover different types of seedlings and vegetables, touching soil and finding worms, it gives us a sense of pleasure that the future generation learns the importance of sustainable farming. As part of their program, the 200 children learned about:

thank you!

Grace Orange

Grace’s main tasks were to help the Communications and Edu-tourism team, from helping to make the Newsletter, the Annual Report as well as setting up the Edu-tourism Facebook page and updating it with photos and information.Three months passed by very quickly. It was a real joy to have Grace on our team. Never a day passed by without a smile on her face and thanks to her, the YUM Jakarta team discovered that vegan food (Grace is a vegan) can be very flavourful and delicious! We hope to one day be able to see Grace again, and in the meantime, we wish her good luck in her many endeavours ahead!

At the beginning of this year, YUM we l comed Grace , a Monash University student who applied for internship at YUM Jakarta for a 3-months period.
