Curriculum characteristics
Task- based framework
In this curriculum, there are three modules and ten specific units which are
either thematically or conceptually related. Each module offers a board
theme related to learners’ interests. Also, it contains three specific units
which are thematically or conceptually related. These themes and concepts
are explored through tasks. The curriculum provides opportunities for ethnic
minority learners to practice meaningful and useful English.
Both tutors and participants know what they are learning and why they are
learning it and all of the activities that are designed keep the purpose in mind.
Learners can see what is required and expected to reach a given outcome.
Most importantly, there is less change to diverge onto tangents and waste
learners’ time, which is particularly important to adult learners.
Also, task-based activities give learners opportunities to exercise and improve
upon existing skills rather than simply regurgitating information or blocks of
curriculum content. The tasks will employ the kind of problem-solving
thinking that should assist learners to develop their own tools for
participating in and initiating real-world communication functions beyond the
classroom. This, in turn, will lead ethnic minority learners to increased social
interaction and participation in the Hong Kong community.
3
Open-ended and flexible
The curriculum provides a structured framework, yet is still open ended
enough for tutors to implement their own ideas and creativity. For example,
teachers can take the students to restaurants or markets, etc. There is time
for tutors to follow up on a particular area that requires further consolidation.
Tutors are encouraged to bring their own knowledge, skills, experience and
interests to the curriculum where relevant.
Seamless designed
The curriculum is seamless designed so that students must use their acquired
knowledge and skills to proceed through the more advanced curriculum
content and concepts. In some instances, topics have been revisited to
provide further depth and understanding. The curriculum is designed to
developmentally scaffold participants’ understanding, beliefs and skills to
effectively integrate and participate.

Jen and Jim (Married 13 Years)
My husband and I go to the same restaurant every year on our anniversary
and sit at the same table. It's the restaurant where we had our rehearsal
dinner. And each year we reminisce...take a look back at the years we've been
together. We remember the year I was 8 months (7)pregnant and we talked
about what we would name the baby. He came with a list of 3 boys and girls
names and so did I. We compared lists and made our decision.
Then there was the year when my father in law died. He died less than a
month before our anniversary, and we mostly talked about him, crying, and
comforting each other in our (8)grief. Then there was the year we were
planning a family trip to Disney World. We brought all the (9)brochures along
and decided where we would stay and when we would go. It was so much fun,
and gave us something to (10)look forward to. This was our 10th anniversary,
and we took a second honeymoon. One thing we say every anniversary, "I
love you more every year."

Grammar Focus: Arrange Events in Time Order with sequence words
Telling stories is common in any language. Think of all the situations in which
you can tell a story:
Talking about your past to a friend
Giving details about something that happened during a job interview
Relating information about your family to your children
Telling colleagues about what happened on a business trip
In each of these situations - and many others - you provide information about
something that happened in the past. In order to help your audience
understand, you need to link these ideas together. One of the most important
ways to link ideas is to sequence them. Sequencing refers to the order in which
events happened. These are some of the most common ways to sequence in
writing or speaking:
1.Beginning
Firstly,
First of all,
To start off with,
Initially,
Examples:
Firstly, I began my education in London.
First of all, I opened the cupboard.
To start off with, we decided our destination was New York.
Initially, I thought it was a bad idea ...
16
2. Continuing
Then,
After that,
Next,
As soon as / When + full clause,
... but then
Immediately,
Examples:
Then, I started to get worried.
After that, we knew that there would be no problem!
Next, we decided on our strategy.
As soon as we arrived, we unpacked our bags.
We were sure everything was ready, but then we discovered some unexpected
problems.
Immediately, I telephoned my friend Tom.
3. Interruptions / New Elements to the Story
Suddenly,
Unexpectedly,
Examples:
Suddenly, a child burst into the room with a note for Ms. Smith.
Unexpectedly, the people in the room didn't agree with the mayor.
Events Occurring at the Same Time
While / As + full clause
During + noun (noun clause)
17
Examples:
While we were getting ready for the trip, Siti was making the reservations at
the travel agent's.
During the meeting, Ali came over and asked me a few questions.
4. Ending
Finally,
In the end,
Eventually,
Lastly,
Examples:
Finally, I flew to London for my meeting with Faisal.
In the end, he decided to postpone the project.
Eventually, we became tired and returned home.
Lastly, we felt we had had enough and went home.

Task1: How to Make Vinegar: A Simple Recipe
Things you’ll need:
1. A large glass container with a wide mouth. Don’t use metal or plastic
as the acid can interact with these materials and ruin your vinegar.
2. Fresh fruit juice. The fruit juice you select should be free of additives
or preservatives. Fresh apple or grape juice is good choices.
3. A bottle of unfiltered vinegar. (You can purchase this at a health food
store.) This is a source of bacteria for the fermentation process.
How to make vinegar? Rearrange the following steps in the correct order.
1. Lay your clean, glass container on the table.
Once the appropriate vinegar strength is achieved, you can package it
into bottles.
Mix the two ingredients thoroughly and place the container into a
warm, dark place. The temperature should be between 75 and 85
degrees in the storage area.
Add an equal amount of your chosen fresh fruit juice.
Taste your vinegar periodically until it’s the appropriate strength for
your particular taste. This process may take up to 4-6 months to be
complete, but remember to check it periodically to assess its taste.
Pour about a quart of the unpasteurized, unfiltered vinegar into the
glass jar.

Grammar Focus: Learn more about Conditional Sentences
In grammar, conditional sentences are sentences discussing factual
implications or hypothetical situations and their consequences. Languages
use a variety of conditional constructions and verb forms to form these kinds
of sentences.
Full conditional sentences contain two clauses: the condition, and the
consequence.
1. Second Conditional (Type II)
The second conditional (also called conditional type 2) is a structure used for
talking about unreal situations in the present or in the future. Type 2: if +
past + conditional
For example:
If I had the money, I would buy this car. (Since I do not have the money I
cannot buy any new car). The action in type 2 is characterized by unreality.
If I were you, I would drive more carefully in the rain.
If dogs had wings, they would be able to fly.
Siti would be sad if Thapa left.
44
2. Third Conditional (Type III)
The third conditional (also called conditional type 3) is a structure used for
talking about unreal situations in the past. In other words, it is used to talk
about things which DID NOT HAPPEN in the past. Type 3: if + past perfect +
perfect conditional
Full form: If I had studied harder, I probably would have passed the exam.
Contracted form: If I'd studied harder, I probably would've passed the exam.
For example:
If I had had the money, I would have bought this Audi. (But I did not have it,
and so did not buy).
If you had driven more carefully, you would not have had an accident. (You
had an accident because you didn't drive carefully enough.)
If we had played a little better, we could have won the game. (We didn't
play well, so we lost the game.)
The action in type 3 is characterized by impossibility.
The time in type 3 is the past and signifies a completed action in the past.
The condition, therefore, cannot be fulfilled because the action in the
if-clause did not happen

Grammar Focus: Gerund and Infinitive
Gerunds and infinitives can be nouns, which mean they can do just about
anything that a noun can do. Although they name things, like other nouns,
they normally name activities rather than people or objects. Here are five noun
uses of gerunds and infinitives.
Gerunds and infinitives can both function as the subject of a sentence:
Travelling by MTR is comfortable and reliable.
To travel by bus is very cheap and convenient.
It is not impossible for an infinitive to appear at the beginning of a sentence
as the subject (as in Ib), but it is more common for an infinitive to appear as a
Subject Complement:
Her favorite fantasy is to play basketball.
The gerund can also play this role:
Her favorite fantasy is playing basketball.
Both of these verbal forms can further identify a noun when they play the role
of Noun Complement and Appositive:
Her desire to play basketball for UConn became an obsession.
I could never understand her desire to play basketball for UConn.
Her one burning desire in life, playing basketball for UConn, seemed a
goal within reach.
