Educational Events
With topics ranging from sexual health to nutrition,
we host informative events and seminars that
provide women with the information and resources
they need to feel empowered.
Survivor Socials
Held monthly in locations throughout San Diego
County, networking meetings are an opportunity for
young women diagnosed with breast cancer in the
region to interact with other women like them in
fun, comfortable settings.
Bunco Night
Once per quarter, newly diagnosed San Diegans
and survivors gather to roll the Bunco dice in a
supportive environment. Survivors enjoy food and
fun in the company of others who share in their
experiences.
Spa Night
Once a year, young women diagnosed with breast
cancer are invited to SK Sanctuary in La Jolla
where they receive complimentary spa services and
hear inspirational lectures in the presence of other
survivors.
Newly Diagnosed Resource Kits (NDRKs)
These kits provide invaluable resources and
information to newly diagnosed young women to
assist them in navigating the experience—from
initial diagnosis to post-treatment challenges and
concerns.
A young woman’s experience with breast
cancer is unique and the facts are startling:
o There are more than 250,000 women living
in the United States who were diagnosed
with breast cancer at the age of 40 or
under.1
o San Diego County has the highest breast
cancer incidence rate in the state of
California.2
o Women under 40 are less likely to receive
clinical breast exams.
o Young women’s breast cancers are
generally more aggressive and result in
lower survival rates.
o Young women are often an
underrepresented population in research
studies.

Community Profile
Young Survival Coalition San Diego is an
affiliate of the New York-based Young Survival
Coalition (YSC)—the premier international
organization dedicated to the critical issues
unique to young women and breast cancer.
When three young breast cancer survivors from
San Diego met at the annual YSC National
Conference in 2006, they knew it was no
coincidence. All three women recognized that
their region lacked support services tailored to
women their age and decided that other women
like them deserve to feel hopeful, empowered and
supported.
Young Survival Coalition San Diego has helped
hundreds of women address concerns about
fertility, employment, and dating—to name a
few—that may arise post-diagnosis by providing
educational events, support groups and a network
of sisters who encourage each other to survive
and thrive.
