I hope that you all had a relaxing and enjoyable summer and you are ready for the year ahead.In the childrens last year at Immanuel there will be pressures, challenges and responsibilities that come with being inYear 6, but also we aim to ensure that it is a fun, exciting and memorable year for the children. They have all settled inwell and are already working hard within class. We aim that this year prepares the children well for secondary school and

    helps them to continue to develop both academically and socially. Please continue to support your child at home withhomework, doing all you can to relieve them of the inevitable pressures that they will face during the course of the year and by

    encouraging them to maintain a positive attitude towards their studies. I am looking forward to meeting with you on 5thOctober.

    Lit e ra c yIn literacy this term the children will write newspaper articles using

    journalistic language and techniques; write poetry about birds of prey, usingpersonification, similes and metaphors to enhance their final work.

    This year we will be focussing on improving the presentation of our work byusing joined up handwriting and think about the presentation of our work.As children achieve this they will be able to use a fountain pen (non-permanent blue ink). Please encourage your child to practise at home.

    Children will be expected to edited and proofread their written work and willbe expected to correct mistakes. I would be grateful if you could encourageyour child to do this in their homework too.

    Readin gPlease make sure that your child is reading a book either from home or schooland that they bring it in daily in their reading bags. They should use adictionary to look up any unknown words. This will help with theircomprehension. Please talk to your child about the books they are reading.

    Ma t hsChildren will complete units based on calculating, using number

    facts, partitioning, problem solving and reasoning, shape,

    measures and mental arithmetic. We will be doing weeklymental maths tests on a Friday and of course there will beSATs test practises throughout the year.

    Kn ow l ed ge a n d Un d er s t a n d in g o f t h e Wor ld( Sc i en c e , Hi s t o r y a n d Geogr a phy)Wow! What an amazing start to our Creative CurriculumTopic Kings of the Sky! On the first day of term the children

    had a fantastic opportunity of experiencing a live display of birds ofprey from Eagle Heights in Kent. Year 6 were very luckyas they also had a talk all about Interdependent and Adaptation

    from the keepers from Eagle Heights. They learnt about therange of different birds of prey within Britain, identified their

    habitats and recognised the features of these creatures. Theyexplored some of the conservation issues surrounding birds of preyand explored different views regarding the treatment of animals.We all had a great time!

    In Science the children will find out more about the specialfeatures of birds of prey and other animals in our unit on

    interdependence and adaptation. They will also revise other areaswhich relate to the outdoors such as rocks and soils, plant grown,

    habitats, mini-beasts and food chains.

    Cr ea t i v e Deve l o pmen t The children have had the unique opportunity of participating in

    close observational drawings of live birds and they have producedfantastic artwork as a result of this. They will also be making amodel of a bird of prey.

    Homewor kYear 6 will be set homework onThursday to bereturned the followingMonday . They will receive twopieces of homework Literacy and Numeracy. If a

    child does not hand in their work on time they will beexpected to complete their homework during lunchtime.Parents can send in a signed note if there is anylegitimate reason why homework has not been completed.

    Once a term the children will be set a project to complete.This is based on the class topic and this term the projectwill be on Birds of Prey. The children will beexpected to research an aspect of the subject and produce aninformation booklet that is well-organised, clearlypresented with diagrams and pictures to illustrate ideas.Your child should spend 30 minutes each week workingon this project and hand it in on the last day of term one.Further information will be sent out this week with theirhomework.

    Secon d a r y Schoo l s Open Da y sThe Open Days for Secondary Schools are justbeginning and I appreciate that children will be visitinga number of different schools. Please let me know, prior

    to the visit and in writing, the dates your child will beabsent from school. As your child may be visiting anumber of schools it is important that your child isreturned back to school as soon as possible. This willensure limited disruption to your childs learning.
