    Year 3 Class BulletinTerm 3 Januar 2011

    Dear Parents / Carers,

    I hope you all had a good Christmas Holiday. Thank you so much for the hard work you put in helping your

    children to complete their holiday homework. Many of the posters are beautifully presented and of a very highstandard! We will be displaying them in the classroom for visitors to see. You may have noticed some changes inthe classroom this week. The Interactive whiteboard and carpet area are now on the opposite side of theclassroom. After some re-arranging of furniture, movement around the classroom should be more straightforward.Dates for your diary:

    Tuesday 17 th January - Year Three half day trip (morning) to Lambeth City Learning Centre (CLC) for an animation workshop.

    Friday 10 th February 2012 end of Term 3. Maths workshop for Year 3 Parents and Carers: Wednesday 25 th Jan - 08:50-09:50 Parents Evening: Wednesday 1 st February

    Topics this termMaths topics to be covered this term include:

    Rounding two and three digit numbers to thenearest 10 or 100.

    Using practical and written methods tomultiply and divide two-digit numbers.

    Estimating the sum or difference of 2 twodigit numbers.

    Explaining how a maths problem was solved. Solving one step and two step problems. The 4 and 6 times tables (for those who dont

    already know them!) Multiplying numbers by 10 and 100. Symmetry. Reading and writing proper fractions.

    Please continue to practise the multiplication tableswith your child on a regular basis, our times tables willnow be on Thursdays.

    Literacy

    Our first unit this term is play scripts. We will belearning the features of good play scripts and writingour own short plays for a performance. I am hoping wemay be able to link this to the animation work we will bedoing in ICT. This unit will develop skills in reading withexpression, accurate sentence punctuation and usingexpressive and powerful verbs appropriately.

    Later in the term we will be covering a unit aboutinformation texts. This will be linked to an aspect of

    our Creative Curriculum focus On Your Marks, Get Set,Go! (related to the Olympics. We our sentence levelfocus will be descriptive writing

    Important Notes

    SwimmingWe will be swimming every Tuesdaymorning until the end of Term 4 (exceptnext week 17 th January). Children willneed a swimming costume or swimmingshorts, a towel and a bag to put them in.The swimming teachers will put childreninto groups according to the amount ofswimming experience they have. We willbe going to Canons Leisure Centre inMitcham.Reading and book bags . Please continueto send your child to school with theirbook bag every day. I encouragechildren to put all letters in their bookbag, this helps prevent them from

    getting lost between the classroom and your waiting hands! Reading books willcontinue to be changed on a Wednesday.Please do come and see me if you wouldlike to talk about home reading and thebooks your child brings home. Continueto listen to your child read, questionthem about the text and sign the reading

    journal so we know that they have readtheir current book and are ready for anew one.

    Class Novel We are currently finishinga book by Michael Morpurgo called Cool!

    Creative Curriculum(Geography, History, Art, DT).

    On Your Marks, Get Set, Go!This school wide Curriculum focus is based on theOlympics. In Year 3 we have chosen to compare the

    Olympics and Paralympics, as well as learn aboutcountries around the world, and how their climate andlandscape affects the sports they excel in. We will befocussing more on Geography and Art as History and DT were covered more last Term.

    RE The history and layout of the BibleOutdoor PE Striking Games (plus trying out one or twoOlympics sports).Indoor PE there is no Indoor PE this term, we are doingswimming instead.

    Spanish is still on Wednesdays with Mrs Laing.

    Science. The science focus this term will be Rocks andSoils. I am pleased that we can link this topic to ourgeography focus about the climate and landscape ofdifferent countries around the world. I am also hopingto do some work on volcanoes and fossils.

    PHSCE Our School collective worship focus is based onthe 7 Olympic and Paralympic values. We will befocussing on these during PHSCE this year. We will alsobe using the SEAL unit Going For Goals to complimentthe work on values and striving to be the best we can be.

    Spelling test andLiteracy based RE Musictrax Outdoor PE

    Outdoor PE will be on FridayAfternoons. It is cold this term soplease make sure your child hastracksuit bottoms as well as their bluePE T-shirt and a pair of trainers.Homework Homework will be set each

    Friday and is due back the followingWednesday. It can be returned earlierif completed. A number of children havenot been bringing back their homeworkon time. Please encourage your child tobring their homework back on time aswell as take an interest the work theyare given and supervise them when theyare doing it, giving lots of positivepraise.

    Spellings Spellings tests are on Fridays.

    Punctuality - Punctuality continues tobe a problem in year three. Please makeevery effort to ensure your child is ontime for school.

    PPA Arrangements for Term 3- MrsLone will continue to take the classduring my PPA time on Fridayafternoons. She will supervise the classduring Musictrax and teach Outdoor PE.
