    Immanuel and St. Andrew CE Primary School

    Year 5 Class BulletinTerm 6 June 2011

    Dear Parents / Carers,

    Our final term together has arrived. I would like to use this letter to thank you all foryour support throughout the school year. I have enjoyed my time in year five and it hasbeen a great welcome to Immanuel & St. Andrews. We will be having our final assessmentsnext week. This is a real opportunity to show off their knowledge and understanding forthe year, so please encourage them to go to bed early and to be well rested for school. InSeptember you will be thinking about their transistion to secondary school. Please try andattend the special meeting being held of you on Thursday 23rd June. This will also be anopportunity for you to meet Ms Pike who will be teaching the children from September.

    There be lots of events in this final term so please read the dates diary carefully.

    Topics this termKnowledge and understanding of the world(Science, History and Geography)

    We will complete our World War two topicfocusing on how the war ended and theeffects of war, relating it to the events in theworld around them. We will try and createan Anderson Shelter in the classroom plusgrow our own fruit and vegetables to see

    how effective the Grow your campaign was.We will also make biscuits using a recipefrom the 1940s.

    Creative developmentWe will look at a range of artists and usetheir styles to inspire the childrens owncreations. We will study the Spanish painterPicasso and Japanese paper art creatingsymbols of peace.

    RE

    During this unit we will study the idea ofpeace and how to be peaceful people. We willalso look at how Jesus described the role ofpeacemakers.

    ICT:We will be looking at the programme

    Fronter and learning how to downloadwork onto it. The children will beencouraged to use it at home as well.

    PPA

    On Thursdays, Mrs Hoare will be in class for thewhole afternoon teaching Year Five Science.

    Important NotesHomework

    All homework will be set onThursday and will be due backon Tuesday, unless thechildren are otherwiseinformed. The children need to be

    encouraged to use their Homework

    diaries. Please check theirhomework and sign the diarieswhen it is completed.

    Spellings will be given out withthe homework on Thursday andthey will be tested on Thursday.They will need to bring in theirspelling book on Thursdays. Anumber of books have gonemissing. Please let me know if anew one is needed.

    Reading BooksEach Wednesday children will have theopportunity to choose a book from theschool library. Please encourage thechildren to return the books on time.They will also receive a new book from the

    school reading scheme on aFriday. It isvery important that children bring theirbooks and book bags to school on a dailybasis.Could I also encourage you to listen to

    your child read and question them aboutthe text at home?

    Numeracy

    In numeracy, we continue to encourage all of thechildren to learn all of their timestables. We wi llcontinue to develop skills in the following areas.: The children will solve one and two

    step problems involving wholenumbers and decimals and any ofthe four operations.

    They will solve simple problemsinvolving fractions. They will decidewhat calculations to do and choosethe method of calculation that theythink is most appropriate for thecalculations involved.

    The children will multiply anddivide whole numbers and decimalsby 10, 100 and 1000, describing the

    effects. They round whole numbers to the

    nearest 10, 100 or 1000 and decimalsto the nearest whole number, and usethis to find approximate answers tocalculations.

    Children will use division andmultiplication to find fractions ofquantities.

    Children will be given opportunity topractice verbal and non verbal testsin preparation for secondary school

    tests.

    Literacy:

    In Literacy we will be developing the following

    skills in writing myths and legends:

    We will identify what is meant bymyths and legends.

    We will compare different versionsof the same story.

    The children will use role play todevelop knowledge of characters.

    They will create a comic strip basedon part of the Robin Hood legendand will develop the dialogue andnarrative through challengingword choices.

    The children will be encouraged toshow a range of sentences

    including complex sentences whenwriting.

    The children will also develop theirskills of editing and improvingtheir work through peer andteacher assessment.

    The children will listen to andread different myths beforedeveloping a myth of their own.

    They will also make and producetheir own stories and poems forpublishing in a class book.

    Year Five demonstrated that theyunderstood how quilts were used duringthe slave trade to pass on secretdirections. They designed their ownsecret directions and then created theirown patchwork quilt. The result was

    stunning!Well done year Five.
