Topics this termIn Literacy this term the learning will be based around the

Creative Curriculum focus Ancient Egyptians. Our first unit is

narrative texts. We will be exploring what it might have been

like to live as a child on a farm along the River Nile in Ancient

Egypt and use this knowledge to write a short story about a

child in Ancient Egypt who has an adventure. Skills we will be

covering include; using drama techniques to generate ideas for

writing; using factual knowledge as a basis for writing a

    narrative text.

Our second unit is information texts. The children will produce

their own leaflet, explaining an historical event from Egyptiantimes. Skills we will focus on include; using paragraphs to

organise information, scanning information texts quickly to see

if they are useful and setting out an information text

    appropriately.

Towards the end of term we will spend some time writing

instructions before finishing with play scripts. Hopefully the

children will write and perform short plays that can be shown

during our Egyptian day that I am hoping to have during the

    week of 11th-15th July.

In Numeracy this term we will be focusing on shape, time, data

handling, measures and money. Time can be a very difficult

concept to grasp. Please chat to your child daily about thetimings of the routines during the day, making them aware of

what time you do things andhow long they may take. It wouldalso be helpful to talk to your child about money whenever you

go shopping, challenging them to pick two items they may wish

to buy and add up the cost mentally.

Please continue to help your child practise their tables daily.

By the end of Year 3 all children should know the 2,3,4,5,6 and

10 times tables. If your child is already secure on these then

dont hesitate to challenge them on the 7,8 and 9 times tables

as well. You may be aware that we have recently been having a

weekly times table challenge. This gives the children theopportunity to show their skills in recalling a times table oftheir choice.

    Important Notes

As a class, Year 3 is very good

at remembering P.E. kit. However, a few

    are forgotten every week. Please

remind children to bring their kit on the

day or keep it at school as it is very

important that everyone takes part in

    every lesson.

Swimming Is still on Tuesdays. Well

done everyone for bringing the correct

kit every week so far! Do remember

that earrings are not allowed to be wornin the pool and hair long enough to get in

the eyes should be tied back.

Outdoor PE will be on Fridays. Kit

    required: pale blue t-shirt/dark

    sweatshirt, navy shorts/tracksuit

    bottoms and trainers.

Trainers for Break times: It is fine to

bring trainers to school to wear at break

times but we have had a problem

recently with children taking a long time

to change back into their school shoes

at the beginning of the next lesson. This is partly due to some children being

unable to tie their shoelaces themselves.

If your child cannot tie shoelaces it

would be helpful if you could spend some

time teaching them how to do this at

    home.

Jumpers I still spend too much helping

children to look for their jumper. It is

vital jumpers are named but please also

keep talking to your child about being

responsible for their own belongings and

making sure they dont have someoneelses accidentally.

Science We will be finishing off the unit calledHelping Plants Grow Well. Before moving ontoLight and Shadows. This unit introduces therelationship between light, an object and theformation of shadows. Children observe theapparent movement of the Sun and the associated

changes in shadows. Investigations will focus onrecording measurements and observations, drawingconclusions from these investigations andsuggesting explanations for observations andconclusions.

Creative Curriculum as mentioned earlier, ourfocus continues cover the Ancient Egyptians. Wewill continue to do a variety of topic work based onthis. We will be doing a variety of DT and Art workas well as preparing for an Egyptian day to be heldin the penultimate week of term (date TBC).

RE Moses the Leader. This focus fits in nicely

with our Creative Curriculum as it was Moses wholed the Israelites out of Egypt and through the Red

    Sea.

Reading books are changed on Wednesdays

    Library Tuesday Lunchtime.

A number of reading record books are not being

signed every week so I would really like to

encourage everyone to read regularly with your

    children.

Reading to, or listening to your child and then

questioning them about the text is not only helpful

for their reading progress, it is also very important

for developing their own writing style as they

prepare to move on to the demands of Year 4

writing. Thank you for helping your children with

their reading and for keeping up their excellent

record of bringing their book bags to school daily.

Homework This term I will aim to hand homework

out on Wednesdays to fit in with homework club. I

ask that children return their homework on the

following Monday but if they complete it before I

am happy to take it in to get started on the

marking! I would be grateful if you could remind

your child to have it out of their book bags to hand

in on Mondays. Spelling tests will still be on

Tuesdays and Times Table Challenge on Thursdays.

PSHCEChanges We will be learning about the

different types of change, positive and negative

and the human responses to it. The theme seeks to

develop childrens ability to understand and mangethe feelings associated with change.

lease note: You may be aware that there is a weekly prize of 2for the class with the best attendance and one for the class who hasbeen most punctual that week. Unfortunately we have only won 4 sofar this year so we have very l ittle money to spend on something elsethe children choose. It would l ike to encourage everyone to be on timeand come to school every day so you dont miss out on importantlearning and so we can do something fun at the end of the year!Dont forget:
