So what is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are jobs with trainingleading to recognised qualifications.

Training is through a mix of on and off -the-job training

Leading to vocational qualifications atlevels 2 or 3.

What types of work have

apprenticeship schemes?

It is a route into many practical, craft andtechnician level jobs.

Popular skill areas include construction(joinery, electrical, plumbing and

building), motor vehicle work,

engineering & hairdressing,

But they can also include: retailing,business administration, IT, engineering

and horticulture.

Why are they a good way into a

career?

At 16, there are two levels ofapprenticeship. Advanced Apprentices take a level 3

vocational qualification Intermediate Apprentices take a level 2

vocational qualification.

It may be possible to progress from level2 to level 3.

Apprentices earn at least 2.60 an hour.Many employers pay more.

Who are they for?

Practical Types: they usually appeal to thosewho like practical learning rather than full-timestudy.

Organised Types: Getting an apprenticeship isnot easy, young people have to be organisedand start applying for these in the spring term.

Determined Types: they require commitment &determination to get & keep the apprenticeship

Academic Types: they will need a minimumlevel of qualifications (often 4-5 GCSES incl.English, Maths & Science

out there?

Competition for Apprenticeships isfierce.

The government and our local councilare committed to creating moreapprenticeships for young people.
