YOUTH SAILING PROGRAMS

• Variety of water activities- sailing, rowing, kayaking, dragon boats

• Programs focus on sailing and life-learning experiences

- team work, responsibility, self-esteem• Broad based participation• All programs located in San Pedro

Cabrillo Beach Yacht ClubJunior Sailing Program

• Located at Berth 35 in Cabrillo Marina• Sailing activities occur within CBYC’s leased

water area• Programs include summer sailing camps,

clinics, high school programs, regattas• 4,500 youth days annually• Seeking to expand their youth sailing

program

Cabrillo Beach Youth WaterfrontSport Center

• Operated by Learning for Life, which supports schools and community-based organizations

• Kayaking and dragon boat programs offered• 10,000 youth days annually• Seeking to expand their aquatics program• Access to open water constrained due to eel

grass

TopSail

• Operated by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute • Offers educational program of sailing brigantine ships

to schools and organized youth groups• 3,000 youth days annually• Port provides 3 year sponsorship of $1.6 million

Other Programs

• Los Angeles Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program- Cabrillo Marina- 160 youth days annually- Hosts ITEP Academy students - Hosts Los Angeles Harbor Cup, intercollegiate regatta

• USC Rowing- Berth 194, Wilmington- Women’s crew team- Seeking to upgrade facilities and will consideroffering youth rowing programs

Wilmington Youth Sailing Center

• In 2006, Board authorized $3.1 million from the Community Aesthetic Mitigation Program

• Sailing program to serve at-risk and low-income youth

• Classroom/office space/slips and dock space• Seeking location in/around Consolidated Slip

long term redevelopment of Consolidated Slip• Land side access constrained

Colonial Yacht, Berth 203• Occupy underutilized/vacant marina space• Benefits include:

- Utilize existing docks- Minimize site work- Accelerated start of youth sailing operations

• Colonial Yacht cooperation needed• Facility could be included in potential marina

redevelopment plan

Consolidated Slip, (South side)• Occupy vacant land on south side of slip• Site provides easy access to channel waters• Isolated from commercial vessel traffic • Site Issues

- Constrained site access- Lack of utilities at site/extensive site work required

- Possible site remediation work required- Adjacent to dredge material offloading site- Longer schedule to begin youth sailing

operations
