Editors note Dear reader, It is a pleasure to have you read this. In my cover story iI have highlighted the reasons why I pursued this, and with me being a student it has been very difficult to juggle between the two. I have given in my efforts to present to you something which might please you, I have made an effort to bring in something for everyone. I myself wanted to add in more elements and make it more interactive but due to constraint of time and my strict desire to only deliver the best restricted me from doing so and me being the only one doing everything made it even more tough. My exams will begin soon and hence I wanted it to be now, and there are many who I have to thank, for being my support and whenever I thought of let go due to extreme stress they pushed me to carry on. I am extremely grateful to my parents, my brother, my all time advisors- my friends who actually helped me in making this happen and all the websites and sources which helped me make this. Thank you all and an even bigger thank you to you for taking time and considering reading this. Hope you enjoy! Yours faithfully, Ayesha.Syed

Cover Story In today's world connecting with each other couldn't have been easier, with internet as the youth's mantra we can connect with our friends and close ones with ease. The television too can provide the feel of being any place underwater or the deserts, your own country anywhere by simply sitting on the couch. But there still exists a void in everyone's life, a medium lacks which can bring you, your friends, friends of friends the youth here under one umbrella. "There is nothing ours which we can look up to, we sure can read magazines or articles on the net but that is nothing which comes from among us." quoted one of the worried youth. The youth here do agree that all can be achieved with the modern technology in our hands but there is nothing which they can look up to

as belonging to them. There is nothing which we can relate too, with the work from the west being more affiliated to their traditions and trends or looking back to articles from back home which is again based on their routines and way we have nothing to relate with, I myself wish for a more broad base which concerns many others and answers our questions, by many others I do not mean a few hundreds there might be in lakhs who too wish for same. We all wish to turn up to more means of mass media, though they do exist for the nationals the expats find themselves in a fix. With only this as my motive, I came up with this minimal effort on my behalf in a small attempt to remove this void. I wish to clear minds of those who think youth in Jeddah muffled up with AC's air have nothing. But

our lives are more than being captive in homes and malls, the feel and way of our lives is completely different and unique. No where around the world can you ever live a life like we do. I heart this place. There's so much about us here that it would be very difficult to pen it down. I am also aware that this magazine might not be completely able to do so and is not all that high, but I wished to do this so that many others too can think of something like this happening here and might make it happen in the future. One of my mate was actually astonished as how they had never thought about something like this before and how ecstatic it would be to have a magazine of their own thoughts and life style being penned down.

4

The world is beautiful and even more wonderful are the people living in it and when described through words they are made more special. A magazine is a book even the ones who do not like to read can grab as well as it isn't about dull pages of words(though I completely disagree that any page with words can be dull) but mere presentation of thoughts and day to day activities in a written form. Hence, I bring to you a medium and base for the many youth like me out there wishing to be voiced, to find a place to relate to and see a part of their reflection. I have made an

attempt to bring down everything I could, with me alone on the driver's seat it has been quite a tiresome journey but I hope everyone finds something for themselves and I myself believe that this could have been much better and have had more variety but time being the biggest hindrance I didn't wish to delay any more, there by here I present to you the youth now

Red glittering lights meet with the pride of the country, the long and tall fountain which showers pearls in the ocean on curved coast of Jeddah. The streets flogged with cars adorn the city on a Thursday night . The

best part about Jeddah is that it is Jeddah. With about 200 and more malls and all of them gushed with people, are the first weekend spot or be it the small gardens or the restaurant down the road all are filled with people. The feel of a weekend in Jeddah is spirited. Jeddah is one of the cities which wakes up after the sun sets. But it isn’t that it is lost when the sun shines, witnessing quiet calm and peaceful roads on a Friday morning is a pleasure of it’s own.

7

Evenings too are splendid in a Friday though many spend it in their homes but driving through the criss -cross small lanes of Aziziyah, Balad or Sharafiyah display the city in a completely different frame. The corniche is the heart of the city and the place which I love the most. To watch the sun blend wit the horizon and witness the change in the shades of sky, the wind getting colder and waves lashing the shore as though it doesn’t matter to them is a heart rendering sight. I have spend most of my life here it was here I have learnt to rise after

falling, to smile and laugh, to cry, to learn, to be who I am today. Jeddah is extremely special today me and hence I wish to give everyone a new vision to look at Jeddah or maybe just realize what the live through everyday is special too. Despite various restrictions and regulations Jeddah is amazing. Be it food, sea, shopping, the wind here, buildings, roads, the slang used here, the people, or just anything. Through this section I wish to show Jeddah in a different light a light which is the brightest of all.

Food talks “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” goes the old saying but how and why ? Here is how apple is a boon for us : 1. Get whiter, healthier teeth An apple won’t replace your toothbrush, but biting and chewing an apple stimulates the production of saliva in your mouth, reducing tooth decay by lowering the levels of bacteria. 2. Avoid Alzheimer’s A new study performed on mice shows that drinking apple juice could keep Alzheimer’s away and fight the effects of aging on the brain. 3. Protect against Parkinson’s Research has shown that people who eat fruits and other high-fibre foods gain a certain amount of protection against Parkinson’s, a disease characterized by a breakdown of the brain’s dopamine-producing nerve cells. 4. Curb all sorts of cancers Researchers at Cornell University have identified several compounds—triterpenoids—in apple peel that have potent anti-growth activities against cancer cells in the liver, colon and breast. 5. Decrease your risk of diabetes Women who eat at least one apple a day are 28 per cent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who don’t eat apples. 6. Reduce cholesterol The soluble fibre found in apples binds with fats in the intestine, which translates into lower cholesterol levels and a healthier you. 7. Get a healthier heart The phenolic compound found in apple skins also prevents the cholesterol that gets into your system from solidifying on your artery walls. When plaque builds inside your arteries, it reduces blood flow to your heart, leading to coronary artery disease. 8. Prevent gallstones Gallstones form when there’s too much cholesterol in your bile for it to remain as a liquid, so it solidifies.. To

prevent gallstones, doctors recommend a diet high in fibre to help you control your weight and cholesterol levels. 9. Avert haemorrhoids Haemorrhoids are a swollen vein in the anal canal and while not life threatening, these veins can be very painful. They are caused by too much pressure in the pelvic and rectal areas. 10. Detoxify your liver We’re constantly consuming toxins, whether it is from drinks or food, and your liver is responsible for clearing these toxins out of your body. Luckily, one of the best—and easiest—things you can eat to help detoxify your liver is fruits—like apples. 11. Boost your immune system Red apples contain an antioxidant called quercetin. Recent studies have found that quercetin can help boost and fortify your immune system, especially when you're stressed out. 12. Prevent cataracts Though past studies have been divided on the issue, recent long-term studies suggest that people who have a diet rich in fruits that contain antioxidants—like apples—are 10 to 15 per cent less likely to develop cataracts.

Apple Jam You'll need:

• sliced apples • strawberry jam • canned whipped cream

Peel and core apples. Cut them into rings, if you can. If you can't core the apple without cutting it in half, then you'll have half-circles, which don't look as cool, but taste just as goo Spread a thin layer of strawberry jam on the apple ring and top with whipped cream

Place to be now England

England, and it’s tale….. 12

Where exactly should you go in 2012? As always, some places will stand out above the rest when it comes to unforgettable things to do and see. To help you decide, we sought out recommendations from four travel experts: Robert Reid, U.S. travel editor for Lonely Planet; Martin Rapp, senior vice president of leisure sales at Altour; Anne Banas, executive editor at Smarter Travel; and Jeanenne Tornatore, senior editor for Orbitz.com. The royal wedding made it one of the world's most buzzed about destinations this year, but England is about to get even hotter. There will be so much going on in 2012 that it's hard to keep count. The country will celebrate Queen

Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee -- marking her 60 years on the throne -- with a river pageant on the Thames and a concert at Buckingham Palace at the beginning of June. Then all eyes will be on London as it hosts the Summer Olympic Games in July and August, and the Paralympic Games in August and September. Looking for more? There will be festivals, tours, performances and exhibitions to mark the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens. - CNN.com

In the spot light Bill Gates

14

Bill Gates Bills journey began after reading the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics that demonstrated the Altair 8800, Gates contacted Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), the creators of the new microcomputer, to inform them that he and others were working on a BASIC interpreter for the platform In reality, Gates and Allen did not have an Altair and had not written code for it; they merely wanted to gauge MITS's interest. MITS president Ed Roberts agreed to meet them for a demo, and over the course of a few weeks they developed an Altair emulator that ran on a minicomputer, and then the BASIC interpreter. The demonstration, held at MITS's offices in Albuquerque was a success and resulted in a deal with MITS to distribute the interpreter as Altair BASIC. Paul Allen was hired into MITS] and Gates took a leave of absence from Harvard to work with Allen at MITS in Albuquerque in

November 1975. They named their partnership "Micro-Soft" and had their first office located in Albuquerque Within a year, the hyphen was dropped, and on November 26, 1976, the trade name "Microsoft" was registered with the Office of the Secretary of the State of New Mexico. Gates never returned to Harvard to complete his studies. Bill Gates, the most generous person on the planet (he's given away $28 billion already), has helped -eradicate polio in India. In January the country announced its first polio-free year. Gates will continue to chip in $200 million a year to rid the world of a disease that is still endemic in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Now, that’s some success!

Music Review : Ishaqzaade

There are many reasons why you should have this album, First it’s an Amit Trivedi album and after his composition of albums and songs like Emotinal Atyaachar, Ek main aur ekk tu, Aisha people sure have hooked onto him. Pareshaan begins on a very slow note hinting it to be a slow through out but you are mistaken, the song goes on a very high note and forces you to sing along. Shalmali has done a fabulous job on the vocals the high and low pitches are perfectly balanced, and the music making it even more attractive. The lyrics are not very simple or catchy yet as you will hear it again and again you are bound to get a grip on them as well. The song’s last phase is the best when “mastiyaan mastiyaan” replaces “pareshaan”.The song in this album is definitely a winner. “Jhallah Wallah” is a qawaalli, with Shreya goshal yet again giving in her best. The song begans at a slow note reminding of “Kajraa re” though the lyrics might stand out in this one. The title track “Ishaqzaade” has Javed Ali taking it to a different level you might feel this song is slow one yet it has a different feel and energy holding you to the song and grabbing your attention. The lyrics too are beautiful and when Shreya

Goshal joins in you would have wished she had done a romantic track after a song like Jhallah Wallah and sure enough the song gets a more beautiful feel with her in the last few lyrics. “Aafaton ke Parindey” is the feel of the movie. Being a fast and on the go track, it sure is catchy with lyrics “ Ishaqzaade jo milte the faasanon kahan hai ab jahanon mein” is sure to catch you. “Chokra Jawan” is another song with Sunidhi Chauhan and Vishal Dadlani a song which is not an instant hit but it’s lyrics and both the singer’s voice may sure make their way into many’s heart. With the recent phrases being pulled with the songs such as “Chokra Jawan hua, Ladki Pareshaan huyi” the songs are sure popular and have made their place in hearts.

Wah wah … Shayari these days is becoming popular not only in kavi sammelan(specific events or places for recitation of poetry) but among the youth, and when something is adapted or preferred by the youth it bounds to have a twist, the poetry which today’s youth prefers is not poetical yet entertaining or hilarious. These poetic lines emerge from on going issues, trends or anything which everyone is talking about leaving the very known and professional poet in a fix. Therefore, when something is popular among youth and is not shared here is impossible. But, if you are one of those who are not really interested or don’t feel so then you have to read some of the shayaris given below, and then mesmerize your friends and win over a few praises. More than being, mere poetry these two liners sometimes though comical but highlight some important issues. Fiction : A walk by the beach

24

The scarlet sun seized beneath the horizon and the last shades of red reigned the sky, as I walked leaving traces of foot trails which were rhythmically washed by the waves. The headphones in my ears took me to another world as my hair veiled my face, and the cold wind tickled my body . I walked on as the load of stress lighted down with every step I took. My stomach gave a growl and I realized I hadn’t eaten anything since morning, since I had done what I shouldn’t have. “Are you out of your mind? Do you realize what you have done?” echoed the accusing voice, I quickly decided to not think about it because it would make me feel worse, I knew I was wrong and to know that I had indeed committed a mistake was worst of all. The music in my ears stopped abruptly after a beep, the battery was dead. I still let the head phones stay there as the splash of waves made way to my heart and I realized how they had been more soothing and musical than what I was listening. I had stopped walking now and was simply staring at the sky, I was always curious and wanted to see the transform to blue and then finally black too ove I had come up with different theories as how God would deliberately distract or divert us so that the sky would change it’s cover. Unknowingly , tears flowed down my cheek and were swallowed by the

waves.” I hadn’t mean to alright, he’s my brother I love him “ I argued with my inner self. I really did love him, he had always been there when I needed him he was my pillar, my guide, my friend , my brother. We had been here several time , splashed water , waited for the stars to take charge and licked my favorite ice cream here. But now, he wanted to go, away from me. I know it’s an once in a life time opportunity for him, but he said he would never leave me always be there and I had a heated argument with him the morning for the same and maybe not because he wanted to leave but because he lied to me hid it from me , that had pierced my heart when I over heard him on the phone, him lying and hiding things specially such important ones from me was the last thing for me. I had accused him, declared his love and affection fake and demanded never to see him again. I hid my face in my palms as I recalled al l that. A warm hand wrapped around my shoulders I turned to find him stand right beside me smiling as he affectionately looked at me and gently wiped my tears. “I didn’t mean to hurt you” he said with remorse. We had started walking now with his arms flung on my shoulders, I felt protected and relieved “neither did I “ hurried the words from my heart. “I know” he

said with a broad smile. He in his brotherly manner explained how he would not leave for ever and come back within a few months and if they didn’t let him he would quit the job and that all this could never be more important than me. A wide smile lingered my face as the stars twinkled in the velvet sky, he offered to take me to a shack close by as our stomach moaned with hunger. “I wish to come back here again and again maybe until I die but with you ,angel “ he had said and I had wished the same . This place was the closest to me, I was always here when I was happy or sad the most . The sand, waves, sky all reflected a part of me. A walk here would always change me.

Weather in Summer

Some might say that we never had a winter or any other season except summer but the temperature is on a rise again. With early mornings turning uneasy and hot, one has to be geared up as it’s only May and feels like summer’s gonna be early this year. We have all dread and moaned on how rain thought giving it a miss in Jeddah this year. The weather is a significant thing which unknowingly governs our living. So, with this section you, who are already aware of the weather will be more informed on how to cope up with it. For temperature these days you do not have to take those extreme summer measures which one may suggest on websites rather for any given website you know better than them cause you stay in one of the hottest place on this planet, trust me. I might sound a bit crazy but I actually like Summer yea maybe because we have vacations in summer but more than that it’s the heat which gives us a chance to enjoy ice creams, stand under the shower for ever and feel blessed, drink cold drinks frequently without fear of catching cold . Yes, I maybe mad but there isn’t any

other season which I have seen so closely or lived through most of the year , we have felt the rains more closely only until in the past 2 years or the rest years have been pretty much like this year with no drop of rain and only heat to live in and not to blame the place it is us who chose to stay in a desert but thanks to all the AC’s, we still survive. Yet, Summer has it’s wrongs too we end up sweating a lot, losing a lot of water from our body and fatal dehydration. Also, getting out in the afternoon or even morning is a torture forcing us inside our homes, and it’s even worst for the skin which has to bear the red sun. Hence, It would be just enough in the conditions these days to wear a sun screen, drink a lot of laban and other cool stuff and eating cucumbers , water melons helps too and actually summer’s ain't that bad either because ye toh sirf trailer hai picture abhi baaki hai mere dost…(This is just the beginning the worst is yet to come) .

Words forever…… Anything can motivate or inspire us pictures, videos, songs, and most important of all words. Words spoken by people when they go through something, words which depict feelings in the best manner possible, it is through words that humans have first expressed themselves with, through which they communicate with each other if we think of it all words are the basis of everything. Hence, words are forever they never die, fade, rot or by any means ever disappear they simply stay on

paper, sheets, screens and most important of all in the hearts of the people. Here are some inspiring quotes to reign over your hearts : • People find it far

easier to forgive others for being wrong than being right.

• The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.

• There are no failures - just experiences and your reactions to them.

• Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live.
