Haiti Earthquake Relief

The Situation: On January 12 at 4:53 p.m., a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the is-land country of Haiti, primarily impacting its capital of Port-au-Prince and its nearly two million residents. It is believed that over three million citizens of Haiti are affected. The epicenter of the quake was centered approximately 10 miles west of Port-au-Prince. Offices, hotels, houses and shops have collapsed. Over 30 aftershocks ranging from 4.2 to 5.9 have already been recorded within the first 48 hours. Already one of the poorest countries in the world, this catastrophe will exacerbate the suffering felt by many already living with hunger and poverty. ELCA Response:

Almost two weeks have passed since the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The outpouring of gifts from members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) to ELCA Disaster Response has enabled a swift response on behalf of this church.

Thank you for your generous financial support which now totals more than $1.6 million. Thousands of other gifts are still being counted. Our community-based partners are already providing:

Two water purification systems to bring clean water to 25,000 people. !" Emergency food and medical supplies to thousands. !" Blankets and tents to shelter 10,000 people who are homeless.

Funding, distributed through three partners, will increase as giving continues.

!" $300,000 has been sent to The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), a key responder and member of Action by Churches Together (ACT). The funds support LWF efforts to provide shelter to people left homeless by the quake.

!" $150,000 has been sent to Lutheran World Relief (LWR), Baltimore, for material aid. !" $150,000 has been sent to Church World Service (CWS) for construction of temporary water systems and dis-

tribution of water purification materials. In addition, $25,000 has been sent to Lutheran Services of Florida for initial support to refugees and Haitian Americans entering or returning to the United States.

Ash Wednesday Service at St Marks– 6:30pm (2/17) On this Ash Wednesday, let us examine our commitment to Christ.

May each of us offer him our steadfast love and faithful service. Our prayers are with Bertha Bassani. Pete’s Mom appendix burst (she is 80). She had emergency surgery and fighting a tough infection. Please keep Bertha & her family in your prayers.

A boy was asked by his Sunday school teacher if he thought Noah did much fishing off the ark? “How could he?” replied the lad. “He only had two worms and there were only two fish.”

If anyone has or knows of children who might be interested in attending Sunday School

at St. Mark, please have them contact Diane Bassani at 570-685-2616. Thinking of Lent Advent prepares us for Christ’s birth; Lent prepares us for the glorious act of Christ’s resurrection. Churches have special services during the weeks of Lent, but it’s what each of us does regarding our spiritual life that makes Lent most meaningful. Lent is a good time to read, study and inwardly digest the four gospels. (The word gospel means “good news.”) A college student decided to work his way through Matthew, Mark, Luke and John for his Lenten devotional time. Soon he was fascinated by the stories, such as the Pharisees and Sadducees trying to trap Jesus in debate. The brilliant Jesus handled every occasion with wisdom, leaving the authorities dumbfounded. During his devotional time, the student was filled with laughter and amazement at the brilliant son of God, who was only in his 30s. Get to know the good news, and you’ll under-stand the young man’s amazement.

The Situation: On January 12 at 4:53 p.m., a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the island country of Haiti, primarily impacting its capital of Port-au-Prince and its nearly two million resi-dents. It is believed that over three million citizens of Haiti are affected. The epicenter of the quake was centered approximately 10 miles west of Port-au-Prince. Offices, hotels, houses and shops have collapsed. Over 30 aftershocks ranging from 4.2 to 5.9 have al-ready been recorded. The city is without electricity and the telephone network has been overloaded with calls making it impossible to reach friends and family. The presidential palace is in ruins and many churches have been destroyed. Hospi-tals that were not directly impacted by the quake are overflowing and the search for survi-vors is intense. Already one of the poorest countries in the world, this catastrophe will exacerbate the suffering felt by many already living with hunger and poverty. ELCA Response:

The ELCA, through the Lutheran World Federation, is already responding to the critical needs of survivors in Haiti. Thankfully, the LWF offices and staff on the island were spared in the earthquake, making it possible for work to begin immediately. Staff there will focus their immediate efforts on issues of water safety and sanitation, as-sisting with medical triage, and providing emer-gency sheltering for the many who are now home-less. The ELCA has long-standing relationships in Haiti through several organizations and the Lu-theran Church in Haiti.

In anticipation of your generous gifts, ELCA Disas-ter Response has authorized $250,000 for immedi-ate relief assistance in Haiti, with the possibility for an additional $500,000 as the full scope of this dis-aster continues to become clear. Your gifts are

needed now to make this type of rapid response possible.

While volunteers, especially skilled workers, will likely be needed in the coming months, the situation on the ground is still far too chaotic – no water, no power, few roads, and very limited communication – to support volunteers traveling to the area in the immediate days.

Give:Gifts to ELCA International Disaster Response help us to provide immediate and effective support to communities which are in need. Please consider giving to support the needs of this response and others like it. Information on giving is provided in the box on the right “How You Can Help.” 100% of your gift will be used in full to bring life sustaining support to this crisis. Thank you for your prayerful consideration.
