The Evoque has quick and accurate steering, and the ride is supple enough to absorb most small imperfections in the road surface, without being so soft that the car wallows when you turn in to a corner. Okay, the suspension isn’t perfect – it

sometimes lets the body bounce up and down a couple of times before bringing it under control – but the set-up is generally well judged for UK roads. The exceptions are the 2WD models, which don’t ride as comfortably as the other models

Land Rover’s petrol and diesel engines are audible when worked hard, but they fade nicely into the background at motorway speeds. The wind noise that builds up around the door mirrors is far more intrusive, and road noise can also be a problem, particularly with cars on 20-inch wheels. The nine-

speed automatic gearbox (optional on the 187bhp diesel model

and standard on the petrol) is smooth and rarely gets

caught in the wrong gear.

Really I think the auto is a must if your budget can stretch to it, it’s got a good size boot for the size of the car and the inside is great

with sat nav DAB radio and Bluetooth these all work well

and are very user friendly, big comfortable leather seats that

make you feel like you’re flying with BA in business class (other airlines are available ) Over all I like it and would happily drive it, you can even get a coupe version if you want to be a bit sportier.

ell election time is almost here! I can barely believe it is has been five years since I was elected to represent Milton Keynes South.

Time has flown since 2010 but I must say it has, without a doubt, been the best five years of my life.

It has been an enormous pleasure to represent such a vibrant and diverse constituency. I have worked with some fantastic organisations, businesses and charities. I have been spoilt for choice of causes to promote in the House of Commons and I have backed many successful local campaigns from the re-opening of East West Rail to a £2.9million expansion of our A&E. I have met and helped thousands of residents with casework. Whatever the result in May I will look back and be very proud of my time serving you.

The UK was a very different place five years ago. I remember knocking on doors and speaking with residents who had lost their jobs and fearing how they would secure their family’s future. Today when I visit residents, businesses, and charities

our long-term economic plan. In an uncertain world, why risk throwing away our hard-won gains?

I have been eagerly writing my election literature and it is impressive to see the progress we have made. In Milton Keynes alone unemployment is down by over 65%, 2,000 new businesses have

started up, apprenticeships are up 66% and 700 families have gone on the property ladder using

help to buy. This is a record we can all be proud of.

his year’s annual hope for hollie Ball will be given an extra boost by the support of 2013 X Factor Winner Sam Bailey, who will be performing live on the night.

Sam will be coming to Stadium MK on the 13 June to perform a number of songs from her new album especially for guests of this year’s Best or British themed ball.

The hope for hollie ball is annual event on the Milton Keynes fundraising calendar attending by over 300 each year. Funds raised will support the work of the hope for hollie Foundation, a local based registered charity that helps to raise awareness of and provide grant funding to those affected by rare and life limiting Niemann Pick Type C. The inspiration behind the charity is 9 year old Hollie Carter who was diagnosed with the condition back in 2008 when she was two years old. Although the condition is thought to be extremely rare, with only 1,000 people known to suffer from it worldwide and 100 in the UK, extraordinarily there are now four children in the local area fighting the condition.

Although children with the condition can develop normally for a number of years the disease eventually, causes them to lose many functions we take for granted such as speech, ability to walk and eat food. Children can develop dementia and seizures that are hard to control with many losing their lives before teenage years. Once it takes hold the disease is aggressive and devastating.

The hope for hollie Foundation was registered with the Charity Commission in March 2014 and 12 months on the trustees are delighted at just how much they have achieved already. The Foundation currently part funds the post of Niemann Pick UK Family Officer. The family officer provides vital support to families from the point of diagnosis onwards and helps to reduce the feelings of isolation and despair. In addition the charity has been able to provide vital funding to families for such things as specialist equipment, medical monitoring equipment and help towards adaptions around the home as well as funding research.

Helen Carter, Hollie’s mum and founder of the charity said ‘We are delighted at just how far we have come in 12 months

and extremely proud of what we have achieved. Being able to fund posts such as the Family Officer and provide crucial funding for specialist equipment makes us feel like we are really making a difference to the lives of others affected by this disease. Our aim is to be able to build on this year’s success so that we can continue to offer the same level of funding if not more in future years. It is so important that we can help

ensure the continuation and enhancement of vital support and information services. Working in

collaboration with other charities we can ensure such services are maintained

and also partner fund research which will hopefully help make lifetime a reality for future generations affected by the disease. Rare diseases are known to be under funded under resourced. Without

the support of grant giving charities and support groups many families

would struggle to cope. This year’s charity ball will make a positive impact

to our funding capabilities for the coming year and help us to continue fulfilling our

charitable objectives.’

This year’s ball will take place on Saturday 13 June 2015 and will include drinks reception, three course meal, live entertainment from Sam Bailey, disco, charity auction, and fun casino. Tickets cost £60 per person and are on sale now.

end up planted in a confined spot in a border, or up against a wall. They grow slowly but they do grow and some species can end up 8m / 25ft high and a whopping 6m / 20ft across when mature! Look around you and you’ll see many a front garden where an unhappy magnolia resides, branches butchered to make it fit.

Magnolias hate having their roots disturbed and they hate being pruned so if you buy one

please plant it in the right spot straight away; somewhere it has room to spread and

flourish. Dig in plenty of organic matter as they like rich soil and make sure you water well during any dry spells.

For small gardens I’d recommend Magnolia stellata. It’s very slow growing

and reaches just 3m / 10ft high and about the same width when mature. It’s early to

flower and produces it’s starry blooms about now. ‘Royal Star’ is a great white variety while

the flowers of ‘Rubra’ are a lovely dark pink. Because it is so early to flower it is susceptible to late frosts so a sheltered position is best.

The most common type (and the one I have in my garden) is Magnolia x soulangeana. It has large, goblet-shaped flowers. ‘Lennei Alba’ is pure white and worth seeking out. I have ‘Rustica Rubra’ which produces pink-flushed blooms.

ardening Expert, TV Presenter and Novelist Alan Titchmarsh MBE will be at Frosts Garden Centre in Woburn

Sands on Saturday 18 April, to help celebrate National Gardening Week.

Alan is visiting the Centre for a day of gardening talks, a book signing and to meet and greet fans. Throughout the day there will be two 40 minute gardening talks where visitors can get tips from the UK’s favourite gardener.

The first talk takes place at 11am; Alan will be providing expert advice on how to create a garden to attract and provide for wildlife. At 1pm fans are invited to return for a book signing and the chance to meet the man himself. Then at 3pm, Alan will hold a second gardening talk where he’ll share all of his small garden secrets.

Entrance to the talks costs £5 which will be donated to Supershoes, a charity which creates personalised canvas shoes for seriously ill and severely disabled children in the UK. Supershoes is a charity very close to the team at Frosts, having been set up by Ken White, the Managing

Director of Frosts Landscapes.

ust last week, Brandon Lewis, Secretary of State for Housing and Planning, visited Brooklands in Milton Keynes to see a Barratt Homes development as the latest number of homes bought through the Help to Buy scheme were announced.

Since the launch, the government-backed scheme has helped 88,420 people across the UK buy a new home, with more than 800 new homes bought in Milton Keynes. Mark Lancaster MP for Milton Keynes North welcomed the Minister on site to meet with the homebuilders and recent homebuyer Vicky Wood. Standing near the site of her family’s new three bedroom home. Vicky, said, “We wouldn’t have been

able to buy such a large house if we hadn’t used Help To Buy, it meant we could find a place that suited us and our money went that little bit further.”

Once completed, Brooklands will feature a total of 2,074 quality new homes as well as a number of additional facilities, including a highly-rated primary school, a secondary school due to be opened in 2016, a town square with shops, cafés and restaurants and a park and ride service with regular buses to the centre of Milton Keynes.Located near to lakes and peaceful open spaces, yet close enough to the city for residents to be able to enjoy its amenities and take advantage of

its excellent transport links, Brooklands will feature a wide range of two, three, four and five bedroom homes.

Brandon Lewis said; “Help to Buy continues to be a huge success, helping almost 90,000 homebuyers

nationally secure a new home, as part of this government’s drive to create a fairer society while boosting the economy.“Thanks to the scheme, thousands of people have been able to buy a home with a fraction of the

deposit they would normally require. It is part of wider efforts to ensure anyone who works hard and

wants to get on the property ladder has the opportunity to do so.”

ary Fitzsimmons has been a volunteer with Secklow Sounds since 2011.

After being “interrogated”, some might say interviewed, by Caz Tricks for her Sunday morning show, discussing his latest projects and his past musical career, Caz persuaded him to record a pilot show. With his eclectic taste in music, and extensive knowledge of the music business, this was like a red rag to a bull. He has a small recording facility at his home in Leighton Buzzard, a large vinyl, CD and mp3 collection and a vivid imagination, so the “Gary Fitz Here” radio show was born. Starting with a one hour show, it quickly became popular amongst musicians and left of center music lovers. After six months or so, the show was expanding and needed more airtime, so the present schedule time of Monday at 10pm for two hours was programmed.

Gary is a musician, sound engineer, arranger and producer. In the 70s, he was a guitarist on the

London pub circuit (Nashville Rooms, the Red Cow etc), with the bands, Glyder and Buster. Moving into the 80’s he was an international touring musician, playing with The Man Ezeke (who was later presenter with Radio Bedfordshire and Radio 1), in Germany (The Hamburg Plaza

and The Berlin Hilton), Sweden (Grona Lund, Stockholm), Oman (Muscat)

and The Rose of Tralee Festival in Eire. In the 90’s he became sound engineer for The Jazz Devils (Virgin Records) and Australian band Ute (Phonogram Records) as well as jamming with Special Brew, his own

12 piece band. 2015 see’s the release of The Special Brew third record.
