It was a thrilling weekend for the Shaunavon Shadows nine-man football program.
On Friday, the team secured its first win of the season after travelling to Fort Qu’Appelle and beating the Bison 30-26 thanks to a last minute touchdown.
But the excitement, it turned out, was just getting started.
On Saturday afternoon, during a half-time TSN telecast of a CFL game, it was announced that Shaunavon, and the Shaunavon Shadows Football program, had been selected as one of the top four contenders in Kraft Heinz Project Play 2018.
The program provides an opportunity for a Canadian community to win $250,000 towards recreational facility upgrades.
“I was on the edge of my seat all day,” smiled Rachelle Dordu, who submitted the Shadows’ entry into the contest and knew that the team was being consid-ered as one of the finalists.
“I can’t believe it right now,” added Dordu, just moments after the finalists were announced on TSN. “This is incredible news for the football team and the community.”

In order to secure the $250,000 first-place prize, residents will have to get behind Shaunavon’s entry in the contest.
Canadians are invited to vote for their favourite finalist story at kraftheinzpro-jectplay.com beginning October 13, until October 19th at 11:59 P.M. PT.
“We need to get the word out and get people to vote for our entry,” stated Dordu.
The grand prize winner will be announced on TSN and RDS on October 28th during halftime of the Toronto-Montreal football game.
The remaining finalists will each receive $25,000 to help restore the places where their communities come together.
Dordu pointed out that the football field at the Shaunavon High School is not just home to the football team - it’s also used for track and field, minor football, minor soccer programs, flag football and more. Residents are passionate about their home teams with anywhere from 250 to 900 people attending games at a field that currently seats 30.
Among other things, Shaunavon offi-cials would like to use funds from the
Kraft Heinz Project Play program to pur-chase bleachers, locker rooms and wash-rooms, as well as a safe and insulated sound booth.
Dordu knew that Shaunavon was being considered as a contest finalist after TSN officials contacted her to arrange a visit to the community. Dordu and Shaunavon High School principal Connie Allemand served as tour hosts to the guests during a weekend visit to the community earlier this season.
The crew toured the facility on Friday (September 28), on the day when the Shadows hosted the Notre Dame Hounds, and stuck around to do more filming the next day.
Dordu, along with local community leaders Riley Kornfeld and Kyle Bennett, as well as former SHS football player Lane Pritchard, were among those inter-viewed for a segment that can be viewed on the kraftheinzprojectplay.com web-site.
When submissions opened on August 7, 2018, hundreds of entries flooded in, all showing a shared commitment to pro-moting healthy and active communities
across Canada.“Be it soccer fields, rec centres, basket-
ball courts, playgrounds, skate parks and other places to play, we were thrilled with the outpouring of nominations we received this year,” said Joanna Milroy, Marketing Director, Kraft Heinz. “It’s really amazing to see the shared commit-ment Canadians have towards improving their communities.”
Kraft Heinz Project Play helps commu-nities from coast-to-coast-to-coast build better places to play by providing funding to improve local recreational facilities. For the past nine years, Kraft Heinz Project Play has awarded $2.6 million to 77 communities across Canada. In total, Kraft Heinz has supported 179 commu-nities, contributing $6.75 million dollars to play-based infrastructure projects across the country.
Votes can only be cast on the website, kraftheinzprojectplay.com, from October 13 to 19 and voting per person is unlimited.
For complete contest rules, program rules, and finalist stories, please visit www.kraftheinzprojectplay.com.
