PROVINCE PROCLAIMS MAY AS SPEECH AND HEARING AWARENESS MONTH
Social Services Minister June Draude has proclaimed May 2014 as Speech and Hear-ing Awareness Month in Saskatchewan.Speech and Hearing Awareness Month en-courages the early detection and prevention of communication disorders, and seeks to increase the public’s awareness to the issues faced by individuals who are experiencing them.An increase of $37 million in this year’s 2014-15 Budget will go toward supporting the inclusion of people with disabilities into the social and economic life of our prov-
ince.“This investment demonstrates our com-mitment to Saskatchewan’s vision of being the best place in Canada for people with disabilities to live,” Draude said. “That’s why it is more important than ever that we en-courage those who experience speech and hearing disabilities along with all members of Saskatchewan’s disability community to help government shape our province’s Dis-ability Strategy.”Province-wide public consultation forums are taking place. More information regard-ing the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy, as well as a listing of the upcoming consulta-tion dates can be found at www.saskatche-wan.ca/disabilitystrategy.

Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (SDHHS) Inc. has been providing services to people who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing since 1981. SDHHS services for clients include sign language interpreter and computerized notetaker services; a community service worker pro-gram; a discount hearing aid battery pro-gram; and access to information and a wide range of technical aids and devices.“One in five Canadians experience some form of hearing loss. Awareness and early screening is vital for people to get the assis-tance they need, such as sign language, lip reading instruction, or electronic devices,” SDHHS Executive Director Nairn Gillies said. “Early access to speech and language
will make our community inclusive. Sas-katchewan has rich cultural heritage and families with deaf individuals add to the linguistic landscape with a vibrant visual language.”“I would like to thank Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services for the valu-able services they provide to those with speech and hearing disabilities, and ac-knowledge their continued work to raise awareness of disability issues affecting their members,” Draude said. “Partnerships such as this are allowing our government to work together with our community part-ners to help provide the required services to support those who need them.”

In a ceremony presided over by England’s Queen Eliza-beth II and French President Francois Mitterand, a rail tunnel under the English Channel was officially opened, connecting Britain and the European mainland for the first time since the Ice Age. The channel tunnel, or “Chunnel,” connects Folkstone, England, with Sangatte, France, 31 miles away. The Chunnel cut travel time between England and France to a swift 35 minutes and eventually between London and Paris to two-and-a-half hours.
As the world’s longest undersea tunnel, the Chunnel runs under water for 23 miles, with an average depth of 150 feet below the seabed. Each day, about 30,000 people, 6,000 cars and 3,500 trucks journey through the Chunnel on passenger, shuttle and freight trains. Millions of tons of earth were moved to build the two rail tunnels--one for northbound and one for south-bound traffic--and one service tunnel. Fifteen thousand people were employed at the peak of construction. Ten people were killed during construction. Napoleon’s engineer, Albert Mathieu, planned the first tunnel under the English Channel in 1802, envisioning an underground passage with ventilation chimneys that would stretch above the waves. In 1880, the first real attempt was made by Colonel Beaumont, who bore a tunnel more than a mile long before abandoning the project. Other efforts followed in the 20th century, but none on the scale of the tunnels begun in June 1988. The Chunnel’s $16 billion cost was roughly twice the original estimate, and completion was a year behind schedule. One year into service, Eurotunnel an-nounced a huge loss, one of the biggest in United Kingdom corporate history at the time. A scheme in which banks agreed to swap billions of pounds worth of loans for shares saved the tunnel from going under and it showed its first net profit in 1999. Freight traffic was suspended for six months after a fire broke out on a lorry in the tunnel in November 1996. Nobody was seriously hurt in the incident. In 1996, the American Society of Civil Engineers identified the tunnel as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

CRABBY DAYWhen the French Academy was preparing its first dictionary, it
defined “crab” as, “A small red fish, which walks backwards.” This defi-nition was sent with a number of others to the naturalist Cuvier for his approval. The scientist wrote
back, “Your definition, gentlemen, would be perfect, only for three
exceptions. The crab is not a fish, it is not red and it does not walk
backwards.”

A little turtle begins to climb a tree slowly. After long hours of effort, he reaches the top, jumps into the air waving his front legs, then heavily hits the ground with a hard knock over his shell. After recovering his consciousness, he starts to climb the tree again, jumps, and smacks the ground heavily again. The little turtle insisted again and again after each knock, while a couple of birds sitting at the edge of a branch, looking at the turtle with pain. Suddenly the female bird says to the male: “Hey dear, I think it’s time to tell our little turtle he is adopted.”
A family of tortoises went into a cafe for some ice cream. They sat down and were about to start when Father Tor-toise said, “I think it’s going to rain. Junior, will you pop home and fetch my umbrella?”So off went junior for Father’s umbrella, but three days later he still hadn’t returned.“I think, dear,” said Mother Tortoise to Father Tortoise, “that we had better eat junior’s ice cream before it melts.”And a voice from the door said, “If you do that I won’t go. “
A young Technician and his General Manager board a train headed through the mountains on its way to Wichita. They can find no place to sit except for two seats right across the aisle from a young woman and her grandmother. After a while, it is obvious that the young woman and the young tech are interested in each other, because they are giving each other looks.Soon the train passes into a tunnel and it is pitch black. There is a sound of a kiss followed by the sound of a slap. When the train emerges from the tunnel, the four sit there without saying a word. The grandmother is thinking to herself, “It was very brash for that young man to kiss my granddaughter, but I’m glad she slapped him.”The General manager is setting there thinking, “I didn’t know the young tech was brave enough to kiss the girl, but I sure wish she hadn’t missed him when she slapped and hit me!”The young woman was sitting and thinking, “I’m glad the guy kissed me, but I wish my grandmother had not slapped him!”The young tech sat there with a satisfied smile on his face. He thought to himself, “Life is good. How often does a guy have the chance to kiss a beautiful girl and slap his General manager all at the same time!”
