Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lawyers don't always fare so well in popular culture. Even the television shows that exalt some aspects of the legal profession (like Law & Order or The Good Wife) also have some lawyers that are less than noble in

both their personal and professional lives. Even in Shakespeare's time this ambivalence toward lawyers was evident in Henry VI, Part 2 when Dick

the butcher, one of the rebels, proposes to kill all the lawyers since by their arguments they can have a man condemned as easily as freed. Still,

every day people turn to lawyers seeking their help with a host of problems. The love-hate relationship continues.

In the Gospel this weekend, the scholar of the law is looking for the way to life. His question is sincere. He is trying to understand what is required of him. He can quote the law, indeed, probably even lives by it. But the

question of who is a neighbor is one of legal precision. The interpretation of the Mosaic law based the fact of one being a neighbor on a covenantal

relationship. Those who worshipped the one God were considered as one's neighbor. In the time of Jesus this narrow interpretation was being reconsidered. Some religious scholars suggested that a more universal

application was needed, while others held to the tradition that Samaritans, foreigners, and those outside the law were not neighbors under the law. Jesus makes his position clear, although by coming at it from the other

direction. It is the Samaritan who shows himself to be a neighbor. Maybe that is where the argument lies for us today. We cannot define

with legal precision who is going to be a neighbor to us. All we can do is decide to be neighborly toward others, that is, to show them the very love

with which we love ourselves. And then rely on God's mercy that someone will be there for us as a neighbor in our time of need.

Vocations Committee Prayer is powerful and our priest are in need of prayer to sustain

them in their work of salvation. We encourage all parishioner to pray for vocations especially before the Blessed Sacrament. Great work can be done in the

church by the people of the parish.

Blood Drive Heartland Blood Centers will be hosting a

Blood Drive in the St. Thomas More Gym Sunday, July 17th from 8:00 to 12:00 Noon.

Walk-ins are welcome. Must have a photo I.D.

OUR ANNUAL PARISH FESTIVAL I am sure that you have heard many things about our annual festival in the news and on social media the past couple of weeks. I think that it is unfortunate that something happened after our festival was over on that last day. However, it was falsely reported that the festival was forced to close early and the violence moved across the street to the Jewel parking lot. The fact of the matter was that our festival had ended. We end at 10:00 p.m. every year on the final day (Sunday). In any event, there are many people who have asked what we intend to do. I would like to address that with you. We intend to continue to provide a wonderful summer experience for our parishioners and our community. We examine what we do every year and try to determine how we can improve. We will do this again over the next several months. The past couple of years, we have added fencing around our festival. This year, we only had two distinct entrances so that the police would have an opportunity to inspect bags and wand patrons. We will look at our procedures and try to make sure that we can provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all who attend. In all of this, I would ask you — those who attend the festival — for a huge favor. This year, we had a few complaints from our neighboring businesses about the conditions of their parking lots. They are allowing people to park there out of the goodness of their hearts. They certainly do not deserve any grief for their decisions. If you park in a business’ lot, I would ask you to do a couple of things: 1. Patronize the business. Stop in before or afterward

and purchase something. Thank them for allowing you to use their lot. That way they will know that they are, at least, receiving some business out of the chaos.

2. Do not leave the lot a mess. This year, several people left an inordinate amount of trash around. Some even tossed dirty diapers on the pavement and drove away. No one should have to pick that stuff up. If it is your mess, please dispose of it appropriately.

In short, please try to be what the parish tries to be: a good neighbor. We hope to be able to provide the festival to you for many years to come.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A Bible School volunteer was walking around observing her classroom of children while they were drawing pictures. As she got to one child, she asked what the drawing was. The child replied, “I’m drawing God.” The teacher said, “But no one knows what God looks like.” To that, the child replied, “They will in a minute.”

Virtus Training Sessions: Saturday, August 13 at 10:30 a.m. or Wednesday, August 24th at 6:00 p.m.

As part of our diocesan Synod, we want all parishioners to attend our safe environment program.

The more people involved, the better this works. Please come to training, even if you are not required to do so.

We all need to do our part to keep God’s children and His Church safe.

The Virtus Program deals with the awareness and prevention of the sexual abuse of children.

Due to the content of the program, absolutely no children are permitted to attend the training. Anyone 18 years or older must be Virtus trained

to volunteer or work in the school or in the parish. Please email Laura Brockway at

[email protected] to reserve your seat for Virtus training and to assure we have enough materials for everyone.

Please arrive promptly. Please enter through the gymnasium doors under the carport.

Did you know? In order for your children to get the best religious education possible, it is very important that they attend religious education classes each year,

from Kindergarten through 8th grade, not just when it is time for them to receive a Sacrament.

The St. Thomas More Religious Education program welcomes ALL Catholic children, including those

with special needs. Our class for students with special needs in grades K-8 meets on Thursdays from 4:30-

5:30 p.m. For more information about our classes, or to register

period of salvation history, so that you can discover the amazing story woven throughout all of Scripture.

The study will be covering twenty-four videos presented by Jeff Cavins.

Each video will be preceded by a lively group discussion.

Our first session: August 18 -November 3, 2016. 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the Parish Office Conference Room.

St. Thomas More School July 10, 2016

To many students, the best day of the school year comes at the end...and it’s Field Day.

Students in grades 4 to 8 compete on blended teams, each suitably named for a country, and although Team USA

always fairs well, it is not always victorious. In the spirit of this year’s Olympics, the competition was fierce, but

the good times were better.

Blue Army of Fatima “I come here from Heaven, I am the Lady of the Rosary.

I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and to ask pardon for their sins. They must not offend our Lord any more,

for He is already grievously offended by the sins of men. People must say the Rosary. If people do as I ask, many souls will

be converted and there will be peace.” Of all the Marian apparitions, none so captivated the world than

at Fatima. As we begin the Centennial, all are invited to the Blue Army of Fatima Hour of Prayer (please note time change):

Every Monday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

while they are here working. From July 19th to July 26th, we are requesting your donation for

toiletries like bath soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, disposable razors, deodorant, mouth wash, shaving cream, and combs. Q-Tips, band aids, dish soap, laundry detergent, bleach, toilet paper, paper towels, canned fruits and meat, peanut butter,

beans, pasta, pasta sauce, cooking oil and rice. These items will be distributed after the Migrant Mass

sponsored by St. Thomas More, St. John the Evangelist, and Holy Name parishes on Sunday, August 14, 2016.

All items can be deposited in the box labeled “Migrant Ministry” in the main church vestibule or during weekdays by

the Parish Office. Kindly label your bags “Migrant Ministry” so they do not get mixed up with other parish collections.

Synod 2016

In the July 3rd issue of the Northwest Indiana Catholic, Bishop Donald J. Hying wrote about young Catholics. Please take the

time to read the bishop’s column and reflect upon this question: “How do we teach our young people how to read, study and

pray the Scriptures, so that the narrative of salvation in the Bible makes sense to them as the interpretive key for their own lives?”

To view Bishop Hying’s videos on synod topics, go to dcgary.org/synod.htm.

If you do not receive the Northwest Indiana Catholic, you can access the Bishop’s column at nwicatholic.com.

What is a synod? A synod is a formal gathering of prayer, dialogue, reflection and discernment, whose purpose is to live the

mission of Jesus with greater fervor and effectiveness. Our

diocesan synod will center around the Church of the

Diocese of Gary, using Bishops Hying’s recently published

pastoral letter, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all

nations…” as the basis for discussion.
