Spring and YouYOUR STYLE COVER STORY
arch the 20th marks the beginning of a new season in temperate regions. Guys, no, NCAA March Madness is not what is being referred to here. Being a tropical country, the advent of spring is not much with much fanfare seeing as
we are the recipient of sunshine all year round. Insert gloating smile here. All though spring is a temperate season it is often used as a metaphor for a time of renewal and by extension, better times. So if you were looking for that telltale sign to use as the mark for rearranging one’s home or even one’s self, let’s make the mark of the new season our springboard for renewal and improvement. Forgive the pun.
Never mind that we haven’t rearranged the house since Christmas dinner, we’ll use spring as an excuse to make some changes and give your home a fresh new look.
It is always best to start from top to bottom paying special attention to corners especially for cobwebs.
Replace your curtains with funky fresh colours like green and orange, it will definitely make a room come alive particularly if you have children.
Don’t forget to pick up your cleaning agents such as bleach,
scouring pads and other essentials. If the burden from the re-cent financial tribulations is still taking its toll, then feel free to invest in some homemade cleaning solutions. Trust us, water, baking soda and lime juice can tackle some tough jobs.
Also it would be a good time to clean out that closet with the 20 pairs of shoes you’ve forgotten you had. There are plenty of charities around who would definitely enjoy the fruits of your uncurbed enthusiasm for shopping.. Don’t forget outside, now would be the perfect time to log off Farmville and start you a real farm. A small garden for the home is ideal for the season.
Detoxification of the boDy
Along with the home, don’t forget that your body could use a little spring cleaning too, a time to de-clutter and relax, even more so to shed those extra pounds you may have gained dur-ing the Christmas festivities.
It is also the season of Lent so if you haven’t reduced your intake of meat or some other vice now would be the perfect time to do so.
A little alone time would definitely be catch up on some read-ing or to catch that new flick your friends saw without you.
Treat yourself, so while in the supermarket picking up your cleaning agent slip a bottle of wine in your shopping cart.
We have heard so often that water is good for the body, but how many of us are drinking eight glasses per day? Not nearly enough, water will always be the best liquid passing those lips and it is great for keeping skin rejuvenated.
So extend that spring cleaning and renewal to your bodies and the summer body efforts that will get under way in a couple of months will definitely be for the better. Here’s to spring!

WomenThe Newest Emerging Market
he term “power of the purse” refers to the ability of a particular group to directly influence another group by restricting access to funding or attaching stipulations to said funding. A study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has shown that women
will earn an estimated $5 trillion in new income, thus shrink-ing the gap between male and female income to single digits in the next 5 years. The power of the purse has taken on new meaning. So much so that economists have posited that the next big emerging market will not be defined geographically, or even politically but demographically.
According to the BCG, an estimated $12 trillion of the $18.4 trillion that is spent annually is spent by the biggest emerging market of them all...women. Gender inequality worldwide persists but the gender gaps in earning, education, health and political representation have narrowed considerably in the past few decades giving women greater consumer power in households and more importantly, in our markets. Econo-mists are willing to bet the farm that this new emerging mar-
ket holds the impetus to spur the post-recessionary world into prosperity over the next few decades.
The current financial crisis has hit male dominated industries such as manufacturing and financial services especially hard allowing for female earnings to grow by 8.1% compared to 5.8% in men. The result...the abovementioned $12 trillion ris-ing to an estimated $15 trillion by 2014. This added spending power in the hands of women is important because of what women are noted for spending on. According to an August 2009 report by Goldman Sachs, women gaining more influ-ence over household and bargaining decisions will see “house-hold spending patterns changing, with purchases increasingly directed towards health, education and the welfare of the
household, bolstering the development of human capital and fuelling economic growth in years to come”. Thus the hope for this new expanding market comes not from its ability to spend more but rather the tendency to spend differently.
When considered as an emerging market, women are almost double the size of India and China the two hottest emerging markets right now. And with the continued rise in gender equality around the world, it is a market with potential that may not quite be limitless, but very close enough. Added to this is the fact that female representation in politics around the world is steadily increasing, a fact which will influence the macroeconomic policy decisions that drive countries around the world. The Chinese proverb says that “women hold up half the sky” and it seems that economists are counting on them to stand fast.
According to the BCG, an estimated $12 trillion of the $18.4 trillion that is spent annually is spent by the biggest emerging market of them all...women.
