Gone are the days when a new box of cray-ons, some No. 2 pencils and notebook paper would suf ce as school supplies. Now, manysupply lists include expensive graphing calcu-lators, ash drives and other electronic de-vices.

Here are some strategies as you prepare for

this school year:Many schools have uniform closets, whereformer students have donated gently usedclothing that can be purchased at a reducedprice. If your school doesnt require a uniform, consider shopping at a thrift store or a resaleshop. Kids grow quickly and fashions changeeven more rapidly. And dont worry; no onewill know where you got your clothes. Youdbe amazed at the resale shops these daysand their adherence to current fashion trends.

Check the ads in your local paper or onlinefor inexpensive school supplies. But be savvy. Many stores will deeply discount some itemsbut mark up others. Compare prices. If youdetermine you need to shop more than onestore, plan your route so you dont have tomake more than one trip out, saving yousome fuel. Check with friends who haveolder students to see if they have leftover

    electronics or supplies.

If your child doesnt ride the bus, plan now tocarpool with other parents.

Look for free or low-cost afterschool activitieseither at your childs school or at neighbor-ing organizations such as the YMCA or theBoys and Girls Club. For more ideas check theOklahoma Afterschool Network, http://www.okafterschool.org/.

If your child plays an instrument, many musicshops offer rental programs. You can also of-ten nd used sports equipment. Always talk to

your childs coaches if purchasing uniforms or shoes is a problem. Many coaches have con-tacts with companies that are willing to help.

Make use of your local library for books andcomputer use.

Most of all, make sure your childs brain isready for the new school year and enjoy theselast days of summer.
