Dear Readers,As Austrian Trade Commissioner to the US I invite you to visit and explore Austria.

Austria has a strong economy with automotive components, machinery and pharmaceuticals as main export pro-

ducts to the US. One of the country's most important industries however is tourism.

Domestic and foreign visitors appreciate the exceptionally well-trained staff, tailor-made offers and the excellent

infrastructure. Austria is also considered a paradise for sports – an image that has been successfully transported

by Austrian sports equipment manufacturers. This is all the result of valuable, export-oriented tourism expertise,

which companies all over the world can profit from.

Known the world over for its green hills, clean lakes and love of culture and sports, Austria just keeps on improving,

becoming an even better place to visit and enjoy.

The number of visitors from the USA is steadily on the rise: be it leisure, business travel or an incentive program,

Austria is an attractive destination with a perfect range of services.

A mixture or tradition and innovation, culture as well as excellent wine and food, art and design and authentic ex-

periences or meeting with friendly locals - the reasons to choose Austria as a destination are numerous.

Thank you in advance for supporting us in promoting Austria in the USA!

Best regards

UNESCO World Heritage Sites in AustriaAustria offers its visitors many beautiful historical sights to visit. Nine of those are nowadays listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites because of their outstanding universal value – and each one of them is worth a visit!

Historic Centre of the City of SalzburgSalzburg, with its dramatic townscape and historicallysignificant urban fabric, together with its proliferation of prominent ecclesiastical and secular buildings fromacross the ages, is a salient example of an Europeanecclesiastical city-state. As a meeting point of culturesand arts from northern and southern Europe, Salzburgis primarily associated with music and the well-knownWolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Palace and Gardens of SchönbrunnThe castle is a symbol of the power and influence of theHouse of Habsburg in European history. Together withthe park, the ensemble is an excellent example of theprincely baroque residences, and a great work of art.

Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut CulturalLandscapeThis alpine region is an outstanding example of a naturallandscape of great beauty and scientific interest. The history of Hallstatt and this region can be traced back tothe salt-economy and through its connection with cultureand nature.

Semmering RailwayThe Semmering Railway represents a notable technological solution to a major physical problem in the construction of early railways, thereby creating a new form of cultural landscape. The Semmering Railway was built between 1848 and 1854 with a length of 41 kilometers.

City of Graz – Historic Centre and Schloss EggenbergThe historic center of the city of Graz reflects artisticand architectural movements originating from the Germanic region, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean, for which it served as a crossroad for centuries. Theurban complex, along with Schloss Eggenberg, builtshortly after 1625, is an exceptional example of a harmonious integration of architectural styles from successive periods. The urban physiognomy faithfullytells the story of its historic development.

Wachau Cultural LandscapeWachau is an outstanding example of a river landscapebordered by mountains in which material evidence of its long historical evolution has survived to a remarkabledegree. The architecture, the human settlements, and the agricultural use of the land in Wachau vividly illustrate a fundamentally medieval landscape whichhas evolved organically and harmoniously over time.

Historic Centre of Vienna Three key periods of European cultural and political development – the Middle Ages, the Baroque period, and the Gründerzeit, the era of industrialization – are exceptionally well illustrated by the urban and architectural heritage of the Historic Centre of Vienna.Since the 16th century Vienna has been universallyacknowledged to be the musical capital of Europe.

Fertö-Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape, jointly with Hungary Fertö/Neusiedler See has been the meeting place of different cultures for eight thousand years. Its variedlandscape bears witness to this intercultural develop-ment process. The outstanding rural architecturearound the lake and many palaces from the 18th and19th century are a part of the significant prominence.

Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps This serial property of 111 small individual sites (five ofthem located in Upper Austria at Attersee and Mondseeand in Carinthia at Keutschacher See) encompassesthe remains of prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements in and around the Alps. They were built from around5000 to 500 B.C. on the edges of lakes, rivers or wetlands. Nowadays the remains of these buildings and the findings from the surrounding areas provide insight into life during prehistoric times in the Neolithicand Bronze Age in Alpine Europe.

Waberer Wines & Grapes is a small family run winery business located in Mistelbach,

about 45 kilometers northeast of Vienna (Austria). Alexander Waberer runs the farm in the

4th generation. As an oenologist has a great passion for producing wine and grape juice:

“Making wine is exciting, exhausting and challenging – but it’s just fun”. Continuously

changing circumstances – no vintage resembles its predecessor. Each year, cards are shuf-

fled for new and you're waiting anxiously to have the first sip. “This is what has motivated

me to become a winemaker.”

“Only people following a vision and having joy at work can bring up excellent products.

We are deeply convinced in that – and you should be able to taste this commitment when

drinking our wines. The goal is to produce and offer you only what we would like to pour

in our own glass as well – no mass-market products without profile – simply the best wine

that nature can give“, says Mr. Waberer.

A special tip: Not only wine tastings can be arranged at the Waberer-Family’s vineyard.

“What people are always excited about is picnicking in our vineyard where we serve not

only our prized wines but also a cold platter of typical home-made Austrian delicacies.”www.wabererwein.at

Introduction to the Czech RepublicPlanted firmly in the heart of Central Europe, the unexpected natural, modern and lively destination makes for unforgettable visits. If you choose the Czech Republic as your destination, it will not disappoint: The small country offers plenty of natural and cultural treasures within easy reach.

Prague, the capital surely deserves its name, the ‘Golden City’, or the ‘City of a Thousand Spires’. It is one of Europe’s most romantic cities, impressing visitors with beautiful architecture from every era and a remarkably well-preserved and charming Old Town that is steeped in history. Although Prague might be the first go-to destination of the country, visiting the country side – the ‘Bohemian Paradise’ – is a delightful extension to your visit.

Ancient towns such as Karlovy Vary and Czesky Krumlov are unique places that you should not miss when visiting and it is easy to understand why twelve regions of the country have been listed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites, with dramatic castles, magnificent palaces and medieval towns nestling in beautiful countryside. The country also hosts world famous spas and health centers.

The most famousowner of the Konopiste Castle was the archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne whoseassassination in Sarajevo in 1914 became a pretext for World War I.

Kutna Hora

The silver mines of Kutna Hora meant it could rival Prague for wealth and power during the middle ages, but withwar and the flooding of the mines, it fell into rapid decline. Now, the medieval splendor has been revived and it isan UNESCO World heritage Site. St Barbara Church and the Italian Court being particularly fine examples of highgothic architecture.

Neuschwanstein or Rothenburg, it offers Europe's best airport and – with it's beer and food culture – is an ideal place to have a good time.

For people who have already been to Munich, is there anything new?In a city like Munich there are constantly new sights, new bars and restaurants, new hotels. In 2016 we will celebrate 100

years of BMW and 500 years of the bavarian beer purity law – both celebrations will be major events for Munich! But for mepersonally the most important news last year was the opening of the Nazi Documentation Centre. It shows the whole historyof the Nazi Party, how it started and grew, but also how it ended. And it does that in a historical location, just next to the„Führerbau“, where Hitler had his office.

For which type of client would you recommend a visit to Munich? For those who love to enjoy! Munich is a very sensual city, full of taste, full of color, full of music. And for people who have

the palate to take advantage of that, Munich is the best place …

Do you have any „secret spot“ in Munich, which you would share with the Pegasus clients?Go to the Hofgarten park, and head for the Diana Temple in it’s centre. During late afternoon and evening hours you can

always expect someone performing live music there. Acoustics here are amazing, and the baroque architecture of the temple and the park make it a sometimes surreal experience – just out of this world! And you are merely 5 minutes from the hustle of downtown …

VIENNA – DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE & ARTFrom the finest Baroque Palaces, Neo-Classicism and Art Nouveau. 7 Days to explore Vienna’s architecture!

6 Nights / 7 Days Tour

DAY 1: Arrival In Vienna: The Imperial Ringstrasse & Baroque Palaces

Meet with our English speaking guide and transfer fromthe Airport to a panoramic city tour to get a first vision of Vienna. Vienna was rebuilt in the late 19th century as a fittingcapital for the last flowering of the great Habsburg empire. The old city walls were replaced by a ring –the Ringstrasse – of buildings in suitable imperial style. The 1869 State Opera House was the first major building on the Ringstrasse, the neoclassical symmetrycontinuing with the Museum of Fine Arts and NaturalHistory. The Parliament built in Greek Revival style by Baron Theophil Edvard von Hansen, is strikingly opposed by Friedrich von Schmidt’s grand gothic CityHall, the one reaching back to the classical, the other to the folk tradition and both built in 1883. The Hofburg, the great sprawling imperial palace originates from 1273, but was continually expanded onthe most grandiose scale. Collectively, the Hofburg andthe buildings of the Ringstrasse express in a compactand ordered way the authority and power of empire in a way no other city can match. In the afternoon, step back over a century to the great baroque period. Prince Eugene of Savoy’s 1723Belvedere Palace once lay outside the city. The formalfrench gardens separate the Lower Belvedere, used forliving, and the Upper Belvedere, used for more formaloccasions. Visit its fine art collection, including the famous ‘Kiss’ by Gustav Klimt. The Belvedere’s baroque splendour is the work of Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, who began his professional life buildingfortresses for Prince Eugene in his wars against theTurks, but ended up Court Architect and continued the‘Habsburg style’ developed by his famous predecessor,Johann Bernhard Fisher von Erlach, perhaps the mostinfluential architect of the baroque era. In what wasonce the imperial hunting grounds, no more expressiveexample of that style can be found than Maria Teresa’ssummer palace of Schönbrunn; von Erlach’s design amasterpiece of harmony and imperial grace. Three course dinner in the hotel.

DAY 2: Art NouveauThere is a seamless harmony to the works of Otto Wagner, blending the ornamentation of the earlier baroque and neoclassical – and even the new gothic –into the flowing lines of Art Nouveau. Throughout thecity, his humble tram stations became shrines to design, and his Kirche am Steinhof is considered one of themost important Art Nouveau churches in the world.Later, his massive concrete Austrian Postal SavingsBank building pointed the way to more modern, cleaner, lines. Inside, the glass-roofed hall is a wonder of lightand a fitting monument to this fine architect.

Keen in making more individual statements, work byWagner’s fellow members of the Vienna Secession movement can be seen at the Secession building; e.g. Gustav Klimt’s famous Beethoven Frieze. Alfred Loos was an early exponent of clean lines and in1903 built Michaelaplatz 3. This still strikingly modernbuilding was dubbed ‘the House without Eyebrows’.After the imperial excess of the previous centuries, nothing expressed the new socialist Vienna of the1920s so dramatically than Wagner’s pupil, Karl Ern’s‘Gemeindebau’ (municipal tenement building) KarlMarx-Hof. At 1.000 meters long, Karl Marx-Hof’s is thelongest residential building in the world. Finally, to roundoff a time of great turmoil and war on a lighter note, we bring you to the Prater, Vienna’s most prized recreation area. A collection of booths, amusementsand restaurants and the Giant Ferris Wheel. Constructed in 1897 and, for 65 years, the tallest in the world, it was made internationally famous in the1947 film ‘The Third Man’.

DAY 3: Design & Hundertwasser Visit the Lobmeyr Glass Museum. For more than 150years their flagship store has been located in Vienna’s famous “Kärntnerstrasse”. There, table-setting and lightingis presented in a harmonious way, surrounded with original ambience of the high Victorian style. The secondfloor houses the Viennese Glass Museum: Here you willfind sets of drinking glasses dating from 1823, when the company was founded, and also part of the Court porcelain and silverware collections. At the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) meet with a representative of the Museum MAK Permanent Collection.Under its director, Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, the MAKdisplays its extensive collection of carpets, furniture andmore esoteric objects in an active and involving way.In the afternoon, it is time to be introduced to the extraordinary painter, designer, architect and adventurer,Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Given the opportunity bythe Viennese authorities to put into practice his concept ofnatural living, the Hundertwasser House is made of bricks, reinforced concrete, ceramics and wood, with muchgreenery as well as distinctive gold-plated bulbous spires. One of the most prominent buildings of the city is thewaste incineration plant on Spittelauer Lände which was also decorated by Hundertwasser. Visit the nearbyKunstHausWien (Vienna Culture House) built to Hundert-wasser’s principles and holding a permanent exhibition tohis philosophy.

DAY 5: The Modern CityDuring the 1960s, visionary designs by architects andartists, called the “Austrian Phenomenon”, attracted in-ternational attention with architects such as WalterPichler, Hans Hollein, and the teams HausRuckerCoand Coop Himmelb(l)au. Hans Hollein’s glass and steelHaas House directly opposite St Stephen’s Cathedral isstill the cause of controversy. After the fall of the IronCurtain in the 1990s and the opening to the east, growth and urban development spawned Sargfabrik, the biggest self-initiated and self-governed housing andculture project in Austria. The bright orange buildingwas opened in 1996, on the site where once the largestcoffin manufacturer in Habsburg lands once stood. Notonly the name (“Sarg” means coffin) and the chimneyare reminiscent of this former usage, but also the floorplan of the new building, designed by the architectsBKK-3. The large Gasometers, formerly providing fueland heating for the city, are today apartments designedby architects Jean Nouvel, Coop Himmelb(l)au, andWilhelm Holzbauer. New skyscraper buildings appeared, and the 202-meter-high Millennium Tower on the banks of the Da-nube is an integral part of the city silhouette, as isWienerberg City and the Twin Towers at Vienna's southexit. The DC Tower 1 by French architect Dominique

Perrault became the tallest building in Austria at the endof 2013, at 220 meters. The largest urban developmentproject is the Danube City, a booming location withskyscrapers and attractive apartments on the southbank of the Danube, changing forever the skyline ofVienna.

Fuchs (1930-2015) was a painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, architect, stage designer, composer, poet, singer and one of thefounders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. He bought Otto Wagner’s summer house Villa (later called Ben Tiber Villa and today Fuchs Villa). A dramaticlocated and designed building, the villa stood “decayingwith dignity in the garden” until Ernst Fuchs’ initiative tosave the building. Much of the villa was restored in thestyle of Otto Wagner, the rest after designs by ErnstFuchs. In 100 years, the cycle of architecture had comefull circle. The villa served as Fuchs’ atelier for a longtime and the artist’s work enlivens and decorate thewhole house, from the large-scale pictures, figures andobjects created specially for it, to the furniture; from decorative fabrics to the bronze figure of “Queen Esther” on the terrace. A prolific artist, all epochs ofFuchs’ creation are represented here. Farewell dinner at the restaurant Vestibül. The Vestibülnear the Burg theater is a café/restaurant with a magnificent, historical ambience. The new glass frontinvites guests to a traditional bar and café.
