Our Local Walks Guide is just out www.tcdc.govt.nz/localwalks which pulls together a collection of walks throughout the Coromandel that are three hours or less in duration. Taking in harbour and river margins, local heritage, playgrounds and playing fields, busy working wharves and along sandy beaches and coastal headlands, there is something for every level of fitness and plenty of treasures along the way. The walks mapped in the booklet are largely on Council land, with a few exceptions where walks lead to Department of Conservation land or traverse sections of private land, for which we are grateful to the owners and ask you to be respectful. On a more ambitious scale our Coromandel Great Walks Project www.tcdc.govt.nz/corogreatwalks has set up a working group, made up of representatives from our Council, East Coast iwi Ngati Hei, Coastal Walkways Group and Department of Conservation staff. This group is looking at potential sites around the Mercury Bay area that could contribute to stage one, including the possibility of a walking link from Hot Water Beach through to Hahei and further along to the Purangi River. An overall business case and environmental impact study is also currently being draſted. And if walking isn’t your thing we also have the Hauraki Rail Trail, which is a grade 1 cycleway following historic railways lines from Thames to Paeroa, Paeroa to Waikino and Paeroa to Te Aroha. The Rail Trail was created in partnership with Hauraki and Matamata-Piako Councils and we’re now looking at the viability of another link from Thames to Kaiaua. DistrictPlanReviewWorking together for sustainable management of the district’s resources

The way we use, develop and subdivide land in the Coromandel is under review.

We’re making changes to our District Plan - this is the document that helps determine where activities can take place in the Coromandel, under what restrictions and what natural and cultural features should be protected.

Our District Plan was last reviewed in 1997 and a lot has changed since then, so we’ve come up with a “Dra District Plan”.

• From October 2012 - January 2013 this Dra Plan went out for public feedback with 930 comments received.

• Our District Plan Review Committee then held six deliberation sessions from March - July 2013 looking at all the changes being suggested.

• This month and next month the District Plan Review Committee and Council will formally sign o on a Proposed District Plan

• The Proposed District Plan goes out for formal consultation in November 2013.
