News and information from the Thames-Coromandel District Council August 2013
Walk this WayOne of the simplest and most satisfying ways you can experience some of the Coromandel’s most magical spots is just by taking a walk.
Our Local Walks Guide is just out www.tcdc.govt.nz/localwalks which pulls together a collection of walks throughout the Coromandel that are three hours or less in duration. Taking in harbour and river margins, local heritage, playgrounds and playing elds, busy working wharves and along sandy beaches and coastal headlands, there is something for every level of tness and plenty of treasures along the way.
The walks mapped in the booklet are largely on Council land, with a few exceptions where walks lead to Department of Conservation land or traverse sections of private land, for which we are grateful to the owners and ask you to be respectful.
On a more ambitious scale our Coromandel Great Walks Project www.tcdc.govt.nz/corogreatwalks has set up a working group, made up of representatives from our Council, East Coast iwi Ngati Hei, Coastal Walkways Group and Department of Conservation sta. This group is looking at potential sites around the Mercury Bay area that could contribute to stage one, including the possibility of a walking link from Hot Water Beach through to Hahei and further along to the Purangi River. An overall business case and environmental impact study is also currently being draed.
And if walking isn’t your thing we also have the Hauraki Rail Trail, which is a grade 1 cycleway following historic railways lines from Thames to Paeroa, Paeroa to Waikino and Paeroa to Te Aroha. The Rail Trail was created in partnership with Hauraki and Matamata-Piako Councils and we’re now looking at the viability of another link from Thames to Kaiaua.
We thank our partner Councils for their huge eort.
And no matter how you get around the Coromandel, we hope you enjoy your time here.

If you already have a collection for your blue rubbish bags and
green recycling crate, then starting from October, you’ll have even
more recycling capacity with a brand new wheelie bin!
More bang for your buckWith three Councils working together, you’re about to get a smarter kerbside recycling service that will reduce waste going to land ll, give you more recycling capacity, create more local jobs and save ratepayers more than $4.5M over ten years.
More space for recyclingYou’ll still use your o cial Council bags for weekly rubbish collections, but starting from October, you’ll get a brand new wheelie bin for plastics, paper and cans. Your current green crate will then be just for glass. This way you can recycle a lot more in a simple, convenient way.
When your wheelie bin arrives (the rst ones will be delivered late next month), you’ll get a handbook with all the details. Or nd out more online at kerbside.co.nz

Rates are charges levied on properties to help pay for your local government services. In the past three years, the average rate has gone down 5%. This year the average rate increase is 1.34%.
When are your rates due? All rates - except water by volume - are payable in three equal instalments due on;Instalment one - 8 September 2013Instalment two - 8 December 2013Instalment three - 8 April 2014
How can you pay?By cash, cheque, EFTPOS (except credit card accounts), direct debit, automatic payment, telephone banking, direct debit and internet banking. You may also pay rates online by credit card.Just go to www.tcdc.govt.nz/payonline
What happens if you don’t pay your rates or are late in paying?A 10 per cent penalty will be added on to any rates that are not paid by the due date. A further penalty of 10 per cent is added to rates that remain in arrears from previous years. If you pay your rates late you can ask for the penalties to be written o if there are exceptional circumstances.
Having Trouble Paying Rates? If you are facing nancial hardship, help is available. We can postpone paying your rates . All applications made during a rating year will be applicable from the start of the following rating year.
Find out more at www.ratespostponement.co.nzYou may also be eligible for a rebate of up to $595 depending on your total gross income, number of dependants living with you and total amount of rates you pay (TCDC and WRC). There’s a handy calculator on the Department of Internal Aairs website at www.dia.govt.nz and homeowners can apply for the new rebate from August 2013, for the 2013/14 rating year. The closing date for applications is 30 June 2014.
What are your rates made up of?There are many dierent strands that make up your rates and what rates are charged. Some of these include:
General Rate - Goes towards planning and management of land, building controls, transport, stormwater and solid waste. This rate is determined by the land value of the property and is district-wide.
Uniform Annual General Charge - For natural and cultural heritage, District leadership and representation amongst other uses. UAGC is a xed dollar charge per separately used, or inhabited, part of a rating unit.
Targeted Rates for particular projects - Targeted rates cover particular services supplied to a property, or an area. We have targeted rates to cover various projects in a particular area, including where a loan has been raised for the works such as ¥ood protection works at Moanataiari and a wastewater scheme at Cooks Beach. Other separate targeted rates include:
• Solid waste and recycling collection.• Wastewater Disposal.• Local Works and Services.

This removes any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing ttings overnight. Some plumbing ttings have the potential to allow minute traces of metal to accumulate in water standing in the ttings for several hours. The Ministry recommends this simple precaution for all households in New Zealand, including those on public and private water supplies.
Flush your TapsThe Ministry of Health reminds all of us to ush a mug of drinking water from our taps every morning.

DistrictPlanReviewWorking together for sustainable management of the district’s resources
The way we use, develop and subdivide land in the Coromandel is under review.
We’re making changes to our District Plan - this is the document that helps determine where activities can take place in the Coromandel, under what restrictions and what natural and cultural features should be protected.
Our District Plan was last reviewed in 1997 and a lot has changed since then, so we’ve come up with a “Dra District Plan”.
• From October 2012 - January 2013 this Dra Plan went out for public feedback with 930 comments received.
• Our District Plan Review Committee then held six deliberation sessions from March - July 2013 looking at all the changes being suggested.
• This month and next month the District Plan Review Committee and Council will formally sign o on a Proposed District Plan
• The Proposed District Plan goes out for formal consultation in November 2013.

whitianga.co.nz26Matchless simplicity. Anytime. Anywhere. When we envisioned MasterBuild, we wanted something any Tom, Dick and Harry* could use to submit building consent applications online. Then we got carried away.
Online building consent application.
Make it so it could plug straight in to any councils’ existing systems.
Design it to make all the backstage stuff automated for staff (no double or triple handling.)
Make it work from anywhere in the world as long as you have access to the internet.
And on it went. You get the picture.
