I hear from all types of business owners over & over: "That didn't work last time". I'm a HUGE fan of learning from past experience and sticking to things that work well, but before I condemn something, I'm also a HUGE fan of asking WHY it didn’t work!
WHY didn't that work last time? Was it poorly planned? Did the person answering the phone drop the ball? Was it promoted or marketed properly? Was it themed properly? WHY did it fail?? Too often I find the marketing and/or the ad was NOT good. I’ve been able to take a marketing piece or campaign and turn it into a winner, producing a great Return On Investment.
Only when ALL of the facts are analyzed can a decision be made whether to try it again or not. Trying it again doesn’t mean doing it the same as last time, usually there are some changes needed. That is where getting all the facts come into play.
Sometimes a particular ad/campaign didn’t work because of the media. I have ads that work for a while and then just stop, due to many outside factors. There are times when it happens because if what the consumer will respond to at that time or what the rest of the business world is doing.
We were helping clients use 6 X 9 postcards very successfully for a while and then response rates just plummeted for a variety of reasons. We’ve seen certain media stop working and then coming back. This goes to something I talk about on a regular basis --- marketing is a moving target, with many aspects evolving.
Think about how many things have change on Facebook over the years. It was originally set up as a way for college students to stay in touch with their friends, now that same age group of people is nowhere to be found on Facebook.
Keeping your eyes and ears open to what is going on and what is changing is critical. It’s also the reason more and more entrepreneurs and business owners are turning to folks like me to do their company marketing for them or at least consulting for them to help them sort it out.
Sometimes "that didn't work last time" is just an easy way out of doing anything and staying risk-free. If you wanted risk-free you should have NEVER gone into business for yourself.
NO marketing or advertising works 100%.
By doing nothing you have NO RISK more importantly you NO chance for success.
