Infection Prevention
...for Standard and Additional Precautions.
Your Personal Protective Equipment...
Kimberly-Clark*Personal Protective Equipment
According to World Health Organization statistics, at any given time, 1.4 million people worldwide suffer from infectionsacquired in hospitals. And with the proliferation of MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) and other multiple drug-resistant organisms (MDROs), that number is increasing.
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) reports that patients diagnosed with MRSA infections rosefrom 1,900 in 1993 to 368,800 in 2005 in the USA1.
Because organisms such as MRSA can survive as long as several months on virtually any surface with patient or healthcare worker contact, such as stethoscopes, pagers, pens, blood pressure cuffs, otoscopes, bed rails, bed tables, doorknobs, patient charts, etc, proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is crucial in preventing the contact transfer of infection – to patients, visitors and to fellow healthcare workers2.
HAIs at a glance:USD$6.7 billion annual impact on healthcare facilities in the USA3
At any given time, at least 1.4 million people worldwide suffer from HAIs4
Estimated ≈6,900 reported MRSA Infection cases per year nationally in Australia5
98,987 US deaths from HAIs in 20026
The additional cost to treat a single MRSA infection in the USA can be as high as USD$35,0007
Proper use of PPE is a crucial step in helping control HAIs8
At Kimberly-Clark, everything we make, everything we do, is focused on protecting healthcare professionals and patients. This means we work every day to develop and deliver highquality products that you can depend on for the protection you deserve.
Kimberly-Clark provides a vast range of Personal ProtectiveEquipment (PPE), consisting of:
Ambulatory CareFootwearHeadwearNon-sterile Isolation GownsPatient Gowns
All of these products are latex free to ensure there is no risk of latexallergic reactions to healthcare professionals and patients.
Electromicrograph of MRSA Bacteria
Special lighting and a luminescent substance representing bacteria show how easy it is to set the problem of contact transfer in motion. A healthcare worker merely has to touch a contaminated surface and then touch a patient.
Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs):A critical issue for you and your patients
Sequence for donning Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):The type of PPE used varies depending on the level of protection needed, e.g. Standard and Contact, Droplet or Airborne Infection Isolation.
Sequence for removing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):Except for a Respirator, remove all PPE in a doorway or anteroom. Remove Respirator after leaving the patient room and closing the door.
Eyewear or Face Shield Gloves
Gown Mask or Respirator
Perform hand hygiene immediately after removing all PPE
Use safe work practices to protect yourself and limit the spread of contamination:Keep hands away from face Change gloves when torn or heavily contaminatedLimit surfaces touched Perform hand hygiene

Personal Comfort
Personal Preference
Protection: Putting safety firstThe most important element in selecting a face mask is the confidence that comes from knowing that both the patient and the healthcare worker are adequately protected.
When addressing facial protection, consider the following:
What are the airborne infection risks?
Is there a risk of contact with bodily fluids?
Is eye protection required?
Does the patient have respiratory symptoms?
Does it meet the Australian Standard for protection against bloodborne pathogens?
Kimberly-Clark*
LONCET breathable film fabric provides anexceptional bacteriological barrierAll KIMBERLY-CLARK FLUIDSHIELD face masks incorporate four layers of barrier protection, including a layer of LONCET breathable film which protects healthcare workers from exposure to blood and body fluids whilemaintaining a high degree of “breathability” thus delivering the critical balance of protection and comfortto keep staff compliant.

(PFE) Particle Filtration Efficiency (0.1 µm). Measures the filtration efficiency of a facemask against small particles, usually 0.1 micron. Latex particles are aerosolised, dried, and passed through the test samples. Control counts are performed, without a testsample in the system. The filtration efficiency is calculated by comparing the results of the test samples to the results of the control counts. Reference ASTM F1215-89.
(BFE IN VITRO) Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (3 µm) Used to determine the bacterialfiltration efficiency (BFE) of various filtration materials. This test employs a ratio of thebacterial challenge counts to sample effluent counts to determine the percent bacterial filtration efficiency (%BFE). The test procedure allows a reproducible bacterial challengeto be delivered to test materials. This test is based on Mil-M3694C, and provides astandard procedure for comparison of filtration materials.
(ΔP) Differential Pressure (mm H2O/cm2) Determines the air exchange differential ofporous materials. This technique employs a water manometer differential upstreamand downstream of the test material at a constant flow rate.
(ASTM F 1862-98) Face Mask Fluid Resistance Testing (80, 120, 160 mmHg) Developedto simulate a challenge to the fluid splash resistance of a face mask under conditionssimilar to actual use. During this test, face masks are insulted with synthetic blood, andgraded as a pass or fail. The masks are evaluated at three pressures, 80, 120, and 160.The higher the pressure at which a mask passes, the greater the fluid splash resistance.

The worry-free choice…for everyone, everywhereLatex allergy is a growing concern within the healthcareindustry. With STERLING Nitrile Exam Gloves, Kimberly-Clarkhas created a latex-free glove with the protection, comfort, and sensitivity9 of latex, at a comparable price. It’s the one glove for most uses, facility-wide.10
The protection of nitrileThe improved manufacturing process boosts the tensilestrength of nitrile – the force required to break through the glove – to increase its already superior barrier protection qualities.
The sensitivity of latexThe process also allows a reduction in glove thickness, which means that less force is required to stretch the material. That provides a latex-free glove with the dexterity and sensitivity of natural rubber latex.
Save space and wasteSTERLING Nitrile Exam Gloves come in space saving 150 count boxes. That can save you up to 1/3 of the storage space you’d usually devote to gloves. The reduced number of packages used also means less waste for your facility.
KIMBERLY-CLARK* STERLING Nitrile Exam Gloves are just one of the clinical solutions that you can depend on to meet the demands of your fast-paced world.
Whether your needs involve preventing healthcare-associated infections, surgical and digestive solutions orpain management, with Kimberly-Clark you’ll always haveone less worry.
