Did you all enjoy the Olympics? We did – though we weren’t bothered
about that little thing going on in London. We were obsessed with
the Google Olympics, which was far easier for us to take part in –
us largely being unfit northerners with little desire to visit the
Big Smoke when the tube situation was deemed to be an utterly
squished affair. Plus, Rach thought that dressage involved adorning
one’s horse with pretty sashes, so we thought it would be a better
idea to stay up north.
No, Google Olympics was fine for us. Dean was horrified when Lisa
and Rach both managed to beat his score in the hurdling, and Howard
got a whopping 30 hoops in the basketball. Claire beat him in the
rowing, though, completing the course in a super quick 12.8
seconds. Of course, these sports only involved jabbing at a couple
of arrow keys on a keyboard, but we still feel pretty proud of
ourselves. Helen is currently laminating the medals that we printed
out, and Jon and Ronnie are busy making a podium out of empty
cardboard boxes for our closing ceremony – during which we will
dress up as
the Spice Girls and perform our own version of their debut single:
‘If you wannabe a Linker’.
Of course, the main reason that we couldn’t travel to London to
partake in the Olympics was the fact that we’d miss Yorkshire Day –
a huge event in the Your Local Link calendar. Of course, it all
ended up
turning into a food fight – Gini, ‘the boss’, decided that Helen
should be punished for trying to work during the Yorkshire pudding
tossing by repeatedly throwing puddings at her head until she
joined in. Unfortunately for Helen, she was trying to leave a
voicemail message at the time. To whoever ended up with a garbled,
hysterical message, we apologise.
Speaking of hysterics, Nic (who is usually über professional and
doesn’t like jokes*) ended up with tears rolling down her cheeks
when she somehow managed to get a miniature helicopter stuck in her
hair. Miraculously Helen came to the rescue and it didn’t need to
be cut out, but there are still strands trapped in the rotor blades
and now it won’t work.
We think we’ll leave the sporty stuff and stick to what we’re good
at…
*That is a blatant lie. Anyone who has met / spoken to Nic, or been
in the next aisle to her in Sainsbury’s, will know that she is
incapable of lasting five minutes without laughing.

After being postponed from the original date in July, the Dragon
Boat Challenge is finally set to take place on 22nd September – and
we’re so excited that we dedicated our front cover to it. This year
is the tenth anniversary of the challenge, which sees participants
race on a 250-metre stretch of the River Ouse between Scarborough
and Lendal Bridges. There’ll be a range of activities and stalls to
keep spectators entertained while they wait for the race to begin,
and funds raised will be donated
to charity. The main charities this year are our own columnists
Brunswick Organic Nursery, and Craft Workshop and York Blind &
Partially Sighted Society – plus, two thirds of the funds raised by
each rower will be donated to a charity of their own choice. Your

go Back To school If you’re a youngster reading this, then sorry –
this one goes out to the mums and dads. They’re going back to
school! Yes! Hooray! No more cries of “I’m bored” and “I want an
ice cream” – they’re going back to learn stuff! Woohoo! September
gives all of us parents moments to treasure forever – the fabled
quiet cup of tea, long soak in the bath that lasts longer than five
minutes, a tidy house that stays that way until the little cherubs
get home. Bliss.
For tips on how to prepare the little mites if they’re making the
move to secondary school, as well as how to pick the right shoes
and bags, head to our Family section.
go TraDiTional Traditional dancing is a fascinating subject. Does
anyone actually know what a Morris is? We’re not sure, but we know
that Morris dancing involves wearing a rather bizarre costume and
waving a stick around a lot. Meanwhile, the Northumbrians
apparently use some sort of ‘Rapper sword’, which we assume
involves fencing to Dizzee Rascal. Whatever the actual dances are,
we know that the York Festival of Traditional Dance, taking place
from 7th-9th September – is a must see. The Saturday features a
colourful dance procession from the Guildhall to Parliament Square,
followed by dancing in King’s Square and St Sampson’s Square and a
spectacular show in front of local dignitaries. There’ll be more,
less formal dancing on the Sunday morning. Visit

THE UPS AND DOWNS OF LIFE AS SEEN BY OUR VERY OWN (VERY) GRUMPY,
(ALMOST) OLD WOMAN
tHe WaY i see it...
This month thousands of teenagers will be heading off to university
for the first time. No doubt there’ll be tears, terror and more
than a few sleepless nights at the thought of what lies
ahead.
And that’s just their parents.
Speaking as one who’s been through it and lived to tell the tale, I
thought it might be good to pass on a few words of advice to any
parents who are facing the prospect of the dreaded empty
nest.
First of all, make sure your kids know the facts of life. Not the
birds and the bees stuff – to be honest, they probably know more
about that than you do – but the really important things. Like how
to work a washing machine or read the small print on a tenancy
agreement. You’d be amazed at what teenagers don’t know. My
daughter had never seen a gas bill before she left home. She just
assumed that the gas supply, like the contents of the fridge,
miraculously
renewed itself without any effort on anyone’s part.
FooD For ThoughT
Talking of food...it’s probably a good idea to make sure they know
how to do more than microwave a ready meal. You might assume anyone
can boil a pan of pasta, but you’d be wrong. If you don’t believe
me, let
me tell you about my friend’s son, who thought it would be a good
idea to economise on his first term’s food bills by bulk buying
tins of beans and loaves of bread from the cash and carry. A
brilliant wheeze, you might think – except it didn’t occur to him
that 15 loaves of bread might actually go mouldy if left in a
cupboard for a whole term.
Fresher Fever
Tip three is to get them to sign up with a doctor as soon as
possible. Teenagers assume they’ll never get sick. But after two
weeks of bar crawls and freshers’ parties, their immune systems
will be in a worse state than the Greek economy. My daughter
visited the A & E department so often in the first month she
ended up on first name terms with the local drunks.
My final tip is once they’re gone – leave well alone. The house
will seem empty without them, and you may well find yourself
sobbing in their bedroom more than once. But resist the temptation
to call and text them every hour on the hour. Just because you
don’t hear from them for a whole day doesn’t mean they’ve been
crushed by a truck. They’re just getting on with their new lives,
and it’s time for you to do the same.

hoT 50 shaDes oF grey. Have you read it? Even if you haven’t,
you’ll probably know it isn’t a book about interior decorating.
Some people find it titillating, but having read it I can’t see
what all the fuss is about. The hero is a creepy stalker, the
heroine is pathetic (after a couple of chapters I wouldn’t have
minded handcuffing her, either. Preferably to the back of a moving
train), and the writing is frankly awful. And as for the idea that
most women secretly fantasise about
being tortured with various items of hardware; if my husband told
me he was going on a shopping trip to B & Q, the only thing
that would get me excited would be the thought that he was finally
going to put those shelves up in my office.
noT Parcel Delivery services. I’ve had a food processor thrown over
my fence, a cashmere cardigan left half unwrapped in the rain, and
even DVDs dumped inside my wheelie bin. The other week we found a
parcel of books mouldering behind the shed – and they weren’t even
addressed to us. And now the Post Office is bidding to be able to
leave parcels with neighbours instead of taking them back to the
sorting office - great!
According to Donna... There’s no better barometer on what’s hot and
what’s not than our Donna. Here, she shares her thoughts on what’s
in or out in her own unique style!

here’s a few famous faces you share your sign with
Virgo (24th august - 22nd september)
librA (23rd september - 22nd october) Looks like you have to deal
with a four way division of loyalties this month. There is some
conflict of priorities between your personal life and your
professional life, and then to complicate things, your duties as a
wife, mother, husband, father, et al. get very much in the way of
personal desires.
ScorPio (23rd october - 21st november) There may be a few things on
offer this month, everything from subtle bribes to profound
promises… but you must remember that there ain’t no such thing as a
free lunch, and sooner or later there’ll be a price to pay. Be
cautious and avoid impulsive or irrevocable decisions.
SAGittAriuS (22nd november - 21st December) There is a temporary
feeling of anti-climax as you enter September but as the month
progresses your spirits pick up and you’ll soon be busy with a host
of plans for both the mid and long term future. You shouldn’t be
afraid of thinking outside the box and doing a few different
things.
cAPricorn (22nd December - 19th January There is possibly some
friction and frustration when you feel trapped and held back by
fate and circumstance. Be patient. This mood will pass, and as you
move towards month’s end, you’ll find some cause for
celebration.

My old granny used to say that “if you want summat done proper, do
it yerself,” and her philosophy holds sway for a lot of Virgos at
this time. This is applicable where work is concerned, and also,
more subtly, in affairs of the heart. If you’re waiting for someone
to make the first move, chances are that they’re sitting there
waiting for you to make the first move! Given the fact that (a)
this is a positive time for Virgoan romances and (b) that faint
heart never won fair lady (or that tall dark handsome stranger)
this is a great time to throw caution to the wind and to tell
someone exactly what is going on down there in the seat of your
heart. Rather than rejection, I’m fairly confident that you’d be
accepted, and probably with open arms! Leastways, I hope you might
put it to the test because you’ve got everything to gain and
nothing to lose. Whatever happens, there’s a much brighter and
zingier feeling to the second two weeks of September: maybe a lot
of things happen and fall into place all at once.

AquAriuS (20th January - 18th February) The trick this month is to
find a fine balance between emotional commitments and career
ambitions. Get the balance right, and each aspect aids and
strengthens the other. Get the balance wrong, however, and a lover
or partner is going to take you to task and make your life
absolutely miserable until you do get it right.
PiScES (19th February - 20th march) There has been a powerful and
deep rooted sea change in the direction and flow of Piscesian
energy this summer and now, moving into the autumn of the year,
there seems to be a whole new ball game being played, with
different rules, goals and expectations.
AriES (21st march - 19th april) A good month for tying up some
emotional loose ends which, if nothing else, should create a calmer
domestic environment. Some travel plans are under discussion,
possibly scheduled for October. A fresh burst of enthusiasm and
commitment within relationships make some of your long term options
much easier to deal with.
tAuruS (20th april - 20th may) Another potentially difficult month
financially. You’ll pull through, but only by robbing Peter to pay
Paul. This financial situation isn’t all that critical, but it will
push your mood into some angry spirals, which could, in turn, cause
you to behave impulsively.
GEMini (21st may - 20th June) Some quite specific financial
opportunity knocking on your door at this time, but to make the
most of it you have to be prepared to take a risk. You may resist
this, but be honest, and ask yourself what you’ve got to
lose.
cAncEr (21st June - 22nd July) It is during the last ten or 12 days
of the month that some notable progress will be made in business
and financial affairs, but prior to that September looks like being
a bit of a slog. A partner’s negativity or lack of emotional
understanding causes some frustration and anger; choose your words
carefully.
lEo (23rd July - 23rd august)
There will be payment of monies owed to you that you’d probably
written off, so this windfall gives you permission to splash out a
little bit and either buy something you’ve long wanted or go
somewhere very special.

Formula One drivers who were rained off at Silverstone. 60
hand-built pedal cars – all designed and built by Scouts aged eight
and above – came to Rufforth Airfield and braved the rain to do
battle. The number of entrants for the National Scout Car Races was
up on the previous year – just like Scouting membership. Cheered on

“It’s more akin to stand up comedy than a play really. It’s like
four stand up comedians, stroke bouncers, telling you about a very
funny night.” John Godber, playwright and director of the latest
production of Bouncers, sums up his play in a nutshell. “What’s
interesting for me is coming
together with people who’ve got profile,” says John. “The play was
the staple of Hull Truck, a rep company, for 28 years and I don’t
think we’ve ever done it before with actors who are well known.
It’s exciting for me to do it on a larger scale.”
The four actors – who will each
play three parts – are immediately recognisable: Ian Reddington,
AKA Vernon from Coronation Street; Don Gilet, AKA Lucas Johnson
from Eastenders; fellow Eastenders regular Ace Bhatti, or the evil
Dr Yusef Khan; and William Ilkley who has appeared in a wide range
of TV soaps and
dramas, and performed in a huge variety of theatrical
productions.
TiMe WarP A whopping 35 years have passed since John wrote
Bouncers, but he says that the play is still relevant today. “Even
though the original version was written in 1977, so little has
changed.
Our Nicolette met John Godber, writer and director of Bouncers, and
the cast of the national tour that’s set to kick off at York
Theatre Royal this month.
Working Class Hero
20
People still go out and get drunk and try to pick up a girl or a
bloke, and they’ll either get a smack in the mouth or a kebab. Or
both. Or neither!”
The play seems to appeal not only to all generations, but also all
regions in the UK, and even countries: John’s work has been
extensively translated into other languages. John admits, though,
that some southern schoolchildren have been a bit bemused by
certain aspects. “I directed a production of it in Bromley ten
years ago, and afterwards I answered some questions. One person
asked: ‘Why did you choose to do it in a Yorkshire accent?’ So I
said, ‘You’ve heard the way I speak, can you have a guess?’ And
someone else piped up: ‘Is it because you just wanted to be
different?’ which I found hilarious.”
no Frills Though it’s theatre, the production is almost like TV –
it’s very fast paced, with lots of switches between characters –
which means that the set and props are minimalist so that the
action isn’t slowed down by set changes: there are just two beer
barrels that make up the set. It also means that the boys all have
to play girls. Ian says that we won’t have a chance to see them
wearing six inch platforms, though. “We’ll be practising in heels
to get into the characters, but there won’t be any heels
onstage.
Just a couple of handbags.” John says that this stripped back way
of doing things, with minimal set and props, means that nothing
gets in the way of the story. “That’s what theatre is about, the
quality of words and performance.”
sorry, you’re noT coMing in… John comments that the whole group are
from similar, working class backgrounds, and all experienced nights
similar to the one portrayed in the play. He says that fellow
Yorkshire lads Arctic Monkeys summed up the essence of a typical
night in their song From the Ritz to the Rubble. “The first line
goes: ‘Last night these two bouncers, and one of them’s all right,
the other one’s a scary’un.’ That’s what it was, and still is,
like. We used to swap jumpers like they do in the song too!”
John says that the best club of his youth was Rooftop Gardens in
Wakefield. “It was the largest club in Europe, it was unbelievable.
Wakefield then was what Ibiza’s become now. Ibiza, West Yorkshire!”
The boys roar with laughter, and Ian grins. “Perhaps Ayia Napa
should be renamed Ayup Napa.”
n Bouncers will play at York Theatre Royal from 5th-8th September.

Off the busy hustle and bustle of Tadcaster Road lies a quiet and
beautiful property. Built in the 1920s for chocolate magnate Noel
Terry, Goddards is now open to the public to experience what life
was like for the creator of the Chocolate Orange. Built in the Arts
and Craft style, Goddards was the home of the Terrys from 1927
until 1980.
Staffed by dedicated volunteers, the house was once the regional
office of the National Trust and has been decked out with
furnishings from the 1930s. Visitors are welcome to wander freely
around the rooms in which the Terry family lived, from Noel’s study
to the luscious drawing room. But unlike most grand houses open to
the public,
at Goddards visitors can actually sit on the sofas and touch the
display items.
As the history of the house is fairly recent, the National Trust is
hoping for visitors to share their own memories and stories – such
as the man who, while watching a video playing within the house
depicting Terry’s factory workers, declared he had just spotted his
mother.
With the extensive grounds including stunning gardens, hidden
informal ponds and a relaxing oasis of rockeries and winding paths,
Goddards is the perfect refuge. Due to the house’s location it is
recommended to walk or arrive by bus. Call 771930.
BaDge oF honour The Museum Trust is asking you to help keep a rare
artefact in Yorkshire One of England’s most notorious monarchs,
Richard III was no stranger to York. Having spent much of his
childhood in the area, Richard spent time in the city as Governor
of the North. To reward those most loyal to him during turbulent
times, the king gave a gift of a small silver gilt livery badge in
the form of a boar, the symbol of Richard III. One such badge was
discovered by a metal detectorist in Stillingfleet in 2010 and now
the Museum Trust is asking for public donations to help keep it in
the region.
Without £2000 to secure it, the badge could be sold on the private
market to the highest bidder – denying the people of York a vital
link to the city’s past. Natalie McCaul, assistant curator of
archaeology, said, “This is an exciting and rare find and because
of its connection to Richard III it makes it something very
important to Yorkshire. We hope we can keep hold of it and put it
on show to the public for them to enjoy.”

Who didn’t love bedtime stories when they were growing up? Tall
tales that led us into magical realms and faraway lands,
introducing us to characters that were hilarious and horrible in
equal measure, were brilliant at lulling us off to sleep (or,
often, quite the opposite). International Literacy Day, which takes
place on 8th September, aims to highlight the importance of
literacy for individuals and the whole community, and we think a
fantastic
way to mark the day with our children is to visit the York National
Book Fair at the Racecourse from 14th-15th September. There’ll be
loads of rare books on a huge range of subjects, from cookery to
crime and everything in between, so there’s sure to be something to
spark their interest. Why not search for a Roald Dahl book with
them – 13th September marks the official day of the genius
himself.

Memoirs are a lovely heirloom to pass down through the generations,
ensuring that great gran’s hilarious story about that tractor and a
pair of y-fronts never gets forgotten. But you have to be rich and
famous to write a memoir, right? Wrong. Your treasured memories can
be remembered by future generations, whether you’re a brilliant
writer or not. Rupert from Ebor Self Publishing passes on his
expert tips for getting started…
Recollections: You can begin your project with nothing more than a
quiet five minutes and a cup of tea, time to begin reflecting back
through the years. You’ll be amazed how quickly your mind begins to
fill with memories.
cataloguing youR memoRies: I always recommend buying a small
notebook. In this you can note down all those random ideas that pop
up over the cup of tea, and then begin to separate them into
different categories – topics, events, people or places.
Planning the book: Your goal is to decide what the book will do –
for example, tell a chronological story of your life; perhaps a
series of anecdotes on different themes, or simply mini biographies
of people who have been important to you at different times.
the fiRst dRaft: All you need to produce is a rough draft, not a
finished masterpiece, and people do this in different ways. Some
are happy to write their own text, others like to talk into a
dictaphone, then get it transcribed into written form and ask a
ghostwriter to pull it together.
the finishing touches: This can involve a cover-to-cover edit
(smoothing it out, ensuring it reads well), proofreading (getting
rid of any spelling or grammatical errors), internal layout (making
it look superb on the page) and a book cover that says “Read
Me!”

Well, what an impressive show Olympic 2012 was. Who’d have thought
that all it would take to drag this country out of its permanent
state of depression and moaning was a load of people who can run
right fast and jump high?
I recently got chance to carry an Olympic Torch (it’s much heavier
than I thought it would be) and meet Olympic gold medal Winner Ben
Hunt-Davis. Ben was one of the Men’s Eight rowing team that won a
gold medal in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Sir Steve Redgrave got
all the glory at that particular Olympics – winning his fifth gold
medal. But the Men’s Eight final was nail biting stuff – with Great
Britain beating Australia by just 8/10ths of a second to claim gold
for the first time since 1912.
be the best What the team did was focus on anything and everything
they could do to be the best they could be. They all completely
focused on winning that race, to the exclusion of everything else.
Ben’s written a book, Will It Make The Boat Go Faster? which
documents the stress, anger, fights, arguments and disappointments
on the journey to the race. And it’s a great read. I’ve managed to
get a few copies of Ben’s book which I’m going to give away. Just
about anyone who is successful at anything practises the same
strategies as that Olympic Eight Rowing Team.

Local
BolT oF lighTning It was one of those ‘where were you?’ moments
when Usain Bolt pressed his turbo boots on and smashed all his
competitors to achieve the 100m gold medal. I was in Tenerife, with
a number of other sport fanatics crowded round a flat screen,
gaping in amazement at Jamaica’s number one sprinter. Unbelievably
he got almost as big a cheer from the UK fans as some of the Team
GB athletes. He is getting cocky now though, and reckons he can win
gold in Rio like those wacky marathon runners who compete dressed
as a
beer bottle.
Even in Tenerife, the Olympics was seemingly all people watched all
day
every day, (well, apart from about 50 women who seemed engrossed in
reading ‘Fifty shades of Grey’ next to terrified husbands who
seemed to
be getting paler instead of getting a tan). On a local level it was
interesting to note that if Yorkshire were a country they would
have come 12th in the overall medals list, a cracking
achievement.
suPer saTurDay While Sky Sports boast of ‘Super Sunday’ when Fulham
are playing West Brom, there really were so many amazing Olympic
moments from the real ‘Super Saturday’ of Jessica Ennis, Greg
Rutherford and Mo Farah. Across the whole games there were so many
to mention from the cycling roll of geniuses from Sir Chris Hoy,
Laura Trott, Queen Victoria Pendleton and Jason Kenny, not to
mention the soon-to-be Sports Personality of the Year and knighted
Bradley Wiggins.

but luckily we know a bloke who does. He tells us about the hottest

funny too so we don’t get distracted by a bit of fluff while we’re

Mo Farah’s second gold has to be my favourite moment, what an
amazing effort and improvement from Bejing.
Inspirational, every one of them, yet there were also some pretty
funny times too such as the Turkish athlete who just obliviously
decided to jog forward when the PA announced the runners to ‘set’.
Another classic was the women’s elimination cycling event where
after each lap the last placed cyclist was eliminated through their
handlebar flashing and lighting up. That was unless you were
Argentinean and just ignored it and kept cycling round. Eventually
she did, before someone ran on and let her tyres down or put a
branch in her spokes.
Some people kept saying that the Olympics weren’t quite as good as
London in 1908 but you can’t compare it to an Olympics where only
22 countries took part and GB won events such as the ‘Tug of War’
(won by the London Police). In fact Britain did a one, two, three
sweep in the medals for that particular event because Sweden didn’t
bother turning up for their bronze medal match.
enD oF The WaiT Of course by this point, York City will have
started their eagerly anticipated return to the football league
after an eight year absence. After only one
home game in August, fans are treated to three fixtures at Bootham
Crescent across September starting with old promotion foes Oxford
United who visit on 1st September. Chesterfield visit a week later
before another Saturday fixture against Cheltenham Town on 22nd
September.
1st September is a busy day for local sport with two of York’s
professional boxers representing the city in a Yorkshire show at
Doncaster Dome. Veteran Graham Fearn will be boxing in his 20th
bout when he faces Robbie Barrett whilst also on the bill will be
Harry ‘The Pocklington Rocket’ Matthews, who will be hoping its
third time lucky when he challenges for a title. This time it’s the
British Masters title that he is fighting for, against Jason Ball
over ten rounds. Both fighters lost on points to the highly rated
Chris Eubank Junior, so it should make for an interesting
contest.

Q. What does an exfoliator do? a. It sloughs off dead skin cells,
getting rid of dry, dull and lifeless skin and leaving you with a
fab, healthy glow.
Q. Why is a massage good for you? a. Massage or any hands-on
treatment is wonderful for your health and well-being. It relaxes
tense, tired muscles and stimulates a sluggish circulation, helping
to shift toxins. It can also help smooth out the appearance of
cellulite.
Q. What does a mud wrap do? a. Hot sea algae mud is applied to your

reduce water retention and the appearance
of cellulite. It also makes you feel wonderful! But this treatment

would be ideal for soothing swollen ankles and nagging back pain.
Seek advice from a salon therapist before you book a treatment,

my partner? a. Many couples chose to have spa days together as they
are romantic and relaxing – and the feel-good factor continues long
after your treatment is finished. Men typically prefer deep tissue
massage, deep cleansing facials or male hand or feet treatments.
Once he’s had his first spa treatment, we guarantee he’ll be
hooked!

hoT Teeny Weeny Bags Now, we know that these aren’t the most
practical of luggage carriers, but we reckon you can squeeze in
just about enough stuff into the new ‘mini bags’ to sustain
yourself on a night out. So, you might not be able to get any money
in there, and your keys poke out of the top – but you still look
effortlessly chic, and that’s all that matters.
caTs eyes Despite the fact that they’ve been popular for years,
eyeliner flicks show no signs of
dropping down to the ‘not’ list any time soon. The feline style
suits the shape of most eyes, and with eyeliner pens becoming more
user friendly, more and more of us are having a go. If you haven’t
yet, embrace your inner kitten and make your eyes purr!
TickleD Pink Maybe we’re clinging on to the last of the summer sun
with this one, but we think that candy-pink blusher is cute and
fresh enough to cheer up those cooler autumn days. As long as you
don’t plaster it on in a perfectly round circle on each cheek,
you’ll look fun, rather than freakishly like a doll. Just lightly
dust your cheekbones and the apples of your cheeks, and inject a
little spring into your step.
noT hangover hell Unlike the eyeliner flick trend, we fail to see
how this suits anyone. It basically involves making yourself look
as if you forgot to take off your make-up the night before – on
purpose. Sorry, but we’re baffled as to why messy black streaks
under the eyes is a good thing.
Disco Diva Frankly, we’re terrified. When we first spotted this
trend, we seriously considered the fact that our cuppa might have
been spiked. Neon fur coats and handbags are hitting the catwalks,
apparently. Select from fuschia, turquoise and canary yellow to set
off your
outfit beautifully – if you’re going to a rave. If not, avoid at
all costs. It might be ‘fun’, but
anyone who doesn’t know you will think you look like a complete
twit.

a great opportunity to get your peepers checked. We spoke to
optometrist Ruth Perrott of VisionCare Optometry in Acomb for
advice. “Regular sight tests are a must for looking after healthy
eyes,” says Ruth, “but your diet can also help.” Ruth explains that
studies show that what we eat can affect our vision, and
antioxidants can help to prevent damage to the retina at the back
of the eye. “Foods that are beneficial to eye health include broad
leaf greens such as kale and spinach, brightly coloured fruit and
veg such as corn, carrots and oranges, oily fish like salmon, as
well as broccoli and eggs,” says Ruth. A lack of exercise can also
contribute to eye problems, particularly amongst people aged 60 and
over, as Ruth explains. “Exercise may reduce the risk of sight loss
from narrowing or hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure
and diabetes.”

# 1. tHe Rules oF ‘tiggY oFF tHe gRounD’.
Firstly, the person who is to be ‘on’ must be nominated. This is
typically done via the Eenie-meenie method. The other players then
scatter around the playground in an attempt to avoid the ‘on’
person, who is doggedly attempting to ‘tig’ (also referred to as a
‘tag’) the other players. If ‘tigged’ that person is therefore
passed the duties of being ‘on’. The only refuge players have from
their pursuer is to remove themselves from contact with the ground;
be it up a tree, on a bench or by shimmying up a drain pipe. Note:
off-the-ground havens are only valid for ten seconds, after which
the protective qualities of altitude become void.

moving on uP Making the move up to secondary school can be daunting
for children and their parents. The Parenting Team at City of York
Council have come up with these top tips to help you cope:
• Make sure all the uniform they need, P.E. kit and equipment is
sorted out so your child feels confident right from the
start.
• If they’re using public transport, help them to plan their
journey to school by checking out bus routes on www.firstgroup.com
or pick up timetables from the central library.
• Make sure your child is fully aware of road safety issues. Check
out www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk. Get them to sign up for cycling
proficiency training at school, if they haven’t done it at
primary.
• For the first week or so, try to arrange for at least one parent
to see your child off in the morning and be there when they get
home to give them a bit of extra support.
• Be prepared for some insecurity in the beginning. Children can
often regress to childish behaviour, such as crying and temper
tantrums, or feeling ill (especially with stomach aches and
headaches).
• Chat to them about their new experiences. This is often easier to
do when you are doing another activity, such as driving or washing
up.
• Homework is important. Make sure your child has a quiet place to
work. Help your child to work out which is the best approach for
them to get homework done.

WHetHeR it’s tHeiR veRY FiRst DaY oR a move to ‘Big’ sCHool,
We’ve got some top tips FoR a tRouBle-FRee FiRst teRm!
Bag to basics Did you know kids sometimes carry up to 60% of their
body weight in their
schoolbags, causing long term back damage? The charity BackCare
recommends children should carry
no more than ten per cent of their body weight. Choose bag with
straps that hook over
both shoulders and insist that they carry it fastened close to
their back rather
than over one shoulder.
best foot foRWaRd Top tips for choosing school shoes:
1. Do your shoe shopping in late afternoon, as kids’ feet swell
during the day.
2. Don’t overspend – children outgrow shoes so fast you won’t get
your money’s worth.
3. A proper fitting pair of shoes should have room between the edge
of the shoe toe and the edge of your child’s toes when their foot
is fully extended.
4. Don’t be tempted to buy shoes with too much room for
growth.
5. Pick a style with laces, velcro or some other fastening system.
Avoid backless or slip-on shoes, or heels.
6. Choose breathable materials, such as canvas or leather. They’ll
help keep your child's feet cool and dry.
7. Look for a sturdy sole that’s thick enough to protect feet from
injury. A patterned or textured sole will prevent slipping.
8. Once you've found shoes that fit well, allow them to choose
which colour or design they prefer. It will save a lot of
arguments!
Power lunches Step away from that soggy sandwich/chocolate bar
combo and give your child a lunch that packs a healthy punch!
Bagels, pitta pockets and wraps make a great alternative to boring
sandwiches. Include some fun finger foods such as carrot or pepper
sticks, breadsticks or wholemeal crackers with cheese or dips.
Replace chocolate bars and cakes with fresh or dried fruit.
Drinks can be packed with empty calories. Look out for ‘hidden’
sugar even in no added sugar squash. Alternatively, go for milk,
pure fruit juices or smoothies.

This month summer finally arrived with all the apologetic energy of
someone who turns up late to a wedding. “So terribly sorry I’m
late,” huffed summer, red cheeks and moist armpits. “Here, have all
the nice days you’ve missed in one go.” And so the temperature
soared, the sun beat down mercilessly and we all suddenly longed
for a return of the torrential rain. And I was chief amongst the
whingers, wafting my collar, squinting at the horrid clear blue
skies and complaining about being hot.
Because I hate the summer.
shock, horror There, I said it. Call me a weirdo if you like, I
don’t care. I’ve always dreaded this time of year and can only
assume I have the opposite of seasonal affective disorder. Or maybe
it’s just that I’m paler than Casper
the friendly ghost and I burn quicker than a cheaply made
shell-suit over a naked flame. Either way, summer can bog off back
behind the clouds.
There is an extra concern this summer – something else to add
to my unease – as this will be my daughter’s first proper sunny
season. Last year, when Ava was just nine months old, we spent most
of the summer indoors lying on the floor,
or out under the shade of a tree, lying on the grass. It’s what
babies do. But toddlers, oh dear readers, do anything but stay in
one spot. Ava, fast approaching two and finalist in this year’s
Little Miss Scream No
pageant, is all over the shop – ou
