With autumn just a few short weeks away, many people willsoon spend less time on the patio and more time within fourwalls. Actually, five walls if you include the ceiling.

Many homeowners dont consider ceilings part of theirinterior design, and it shows. Most are expanses of bland whitepaint. But savvy do-it-yourselfers are converting these blankcanvases into interesting and functional design elements thatcan accent a rooms decor, create a cozier space or disguise

problems commonly found on this fifth wall. The best news: Updating a ceiling is one of the easiest andbudget-friendly ways to freshen a space. All the recent attentionon ceilings - from both professional designers and DIY-ers - hasprompted the creation of new products and project ideas.

Dana Vento, DIY expert and popular home renovationblogger, recommends tackling a ceiling project that can bequickly and easily finished over the weekend. Here are her tipsto boost your homes value while achieving DIY gratificationthis fall:

Warm up with wood.Theres a reason wood flooring is sopopular - it tends to warm up a room and add character. Thesame goes for ceilings. Real or engineered wood panels can

extend your sense of style in any room. Thats because theycome in a wide range of tones, textures and patterns to suit anydecorating style, from rustic to mid-century modern to sleekcontemporary.

Go beyond plain vanilla. For those who want to add asplash of color, the ceiling holds special allure. Painting the

ceiling the same color as the walls (or one shade lighter) cmake a small room feel larger. A bright color, say yellow pink, could enliven a childs room, while a sky blue ceilicreates a more soothing ambiance. Black ceilings have thown design advantages, dramatically defining a dining area

an open floor plan, for instance, or enhancing the envelopiatmosphere of a home theater.

Love the look of metals? Add some character ashimmer to your ceiling. Consider todays pressed metal ceilitiles. Theyre far easier to install than their antique ancestoand the light-bouncing properties of copper, brass alacquered steel can help raise the ceiling visually in any room

Hide the popcorn. Even confident DIY-ers dont relish tidea of scrapping popcorn ceilings to remove the material anthen deal with the messy cleanup. But now theres an easier amore attractive fix, Vento says.

We took the plunge and installed an Armstrong Woodhav

plank ceiling, which can be applied directly over the popcornshe says. Like wood, Woodhaven planks come in differefinishes, and can also be painted.

Vento recommends homeowners start thinking about thceiling by exploring websites and local businesses for ideas.

    B

4 ways to discover the designpotential of the 5th wall

Left: Before creating a decorative ceiling. Right: After theaddition of decorative ceiling elements.

For homeowners who experience cold winters, thewarmth and crackle of a fireplace can be a wonderfuladdition to a home. But when a typical homeowner picturesa fireplace, they will usually imagine a wood-burning ornatural gas-burning fireplace. However, there is a thirdoption: an electronic fireplace. Although less common, electric fireplaces are often safer, greener, less expensive tooperate and more stylish than other options.

Unlike a wood or natural gas fireplace, an electronicfireplace does not actually produce a flame. The illusoryflames are simply light refracted in a random, three-dimensional pattern. As for the heat, think of it like atoaster. It has a coil that heats up. The heat simply radiates

out, or it can have a blower attached to it like a fan behinda toaster, says Bobby Renner, chief building scientist forAmericas Best Energy Team. Wilfred Weihe, a contributorto ElectricFireplaceHeater.org, says an electric fireplacedoesnt give off enough heat to warm an entire house, butit generates enough heat to warm a 400 square-foot room.

Because nothing burns, electronic fireplaces areconsidered safer than wood or gas fireplaces. The lack of aflame also means that there are no flying embers. There areno exposed hot surfaces to cause accidental burns. Materialsare usually cool to the touch. There are no chimneys thatneed to be cleaned or regular maintenance of any kind,Weihe says. And Renner adds, Without combustion, theres

no worry about carbon monoxide or anything like that. And because there are no gases or toxins released,

electronic fireplaces are greener than wood or gas options.Weihe notes, There is no buildup of sulfur, nitrogen oxides, formaldehyde or other toxins that can cause wheezing, asthma or bronchitis. Electronic fireplaces are also the mostenergy efficient. Weihe continues, With coils producingheat via electricity, and fans or blowers distributing thewarmth, all energy is fully used. None is wasted.

That energy efficiency leads to another benefit:Electronic fireplaces are inexpensive to buy, install, anduse, Renner says. Weihe adds, You can find an electricfireplace to fit just about any budget. Some cost as little as

$200. An electronic model will be the easiest and cheapestto install, because all it requires is a power source. A woodfireplace will require a chimney, and a gas fireplace willrequire a gas line. Renner compares the operating costs ofthe various models: Electronic fireplaces cost about five toten cents an hour to operate, whereas a natural gas fireplace

costs about twenty cents an hour, and a wood fireplawill require wood, time to chop and so on. Regardinmaintenance costs, Weihe says, Replacement parts are alless expensive for an electric fireplace, and repairs are easy

Finally, electric fireplaces can also meet just about anstyle. Weihe says, They come in various sizes, materiastyles, colors and wattage. They are versatile and can fit aarea of any room in any style or size home. Renner echothis sentiment, saying, I think people will be surprised bthe different electric fireplaces available.

However, electric fireplaces do have their drawbacks. Fsome people, the lack of a real flame is a deal breaker. Others not like electric fireplaces smaller size because they tend nto give off as much heat as a wood or gas fireplace. Similarlunlike a wood or gas fireplace, electric fireplaces will n

work if a winter storm knocks out the power, Weihe noteAnother common complaint Weihe hears is that although electric fireplace does not get as hot as other types of fireplacsome electric models have a firebox or blower low to tground, requiring installation away from carpet, drapes other flammable materials. Renner also notes, When woor gas burn, it releases moisture, but straight electrical heatjust heat. It wont create any moisture, so an electric fireplacan dry out a room.

Like most interior design decisions, it often comes dowto a balance of cost, style and personal preferences. Fhomeowners who are looking for a safe, low-cost, energefficient alternative to a wood or gas fireplace, odds are th

can find an electric model that strikes that right balance.

You may not need to replace those kitchen or bathroom

cabinets, nor the built-ins in your living room or den. All ittakes to create the look of newness and perhaps eliminatethat outdated light color of your cabinets is staining thosewood structures, drawers and doors.

When you start looking at stain colors, its easy to getoverwhelmed. The hues are just so lovely, and some seemso similar in tone, that you may find yourself stumped tosuch a degree that you cant even decide between light anddark wood stain.

To help you choose a stain color for your cabinetry, hereare some tips to keep in mind:

Test colors against your existing hardwood floor col-or. The shade of your cabinet stain shouldnt match exactly. You need some color contrast to allow the beautiful finish ofyour cabinets to stand out. A coordinating shade is ideal. Itsa common error among home remodelers to forget to placestain color samples against their existing flooring and evenceiling colors.

Think about how light, medium and dark stains peform with your rooms theme and style. Lighter stains caof course, brighten casual spaces and go well with a cou

try-themed room. Medium stains such as chestnut suit motraditional decor in your rooms design, adding richness awarmth while easily complementing many different typof wood in your home. And medium stains can extend byond wood colors to exotic hues such as pink and green fa more whimsical or even spa-inspired color design. Dastains such as ebony and mahogany create a rich, stylish lofor a room, complementing modern interiors. Dark staina top trend now, complementing non-wood pieces such asclawfoot tub or pedestal sinks whose colors pop alongsidarker custom cabinetry.

Consider your wood species. According to t

experts at The Furniture Guild, the species of wood you slected for your ... custom cabinetry will greatly affect yoselection of wood stain color. Oak is considered the easiewood to stain and gives you the greatest amount of color otions. Cabinetry (and wood flooring) made of maple, birand coniferous wood such as pine or fir are difficult to staevenly and look best when left in their natural hues.

Its a factor to consider, since some of these woods comein a more limited number of shades. Talk to your paint storeexpert to get helpful lessons in different woods grain sizesand pores to understand better what goes into your stainingprocess and color choice.

Explore classic and exotic wood stains. For in-stance, basic wood stain colors may be oak or pine, and

youll also find exotic wood stain colors such as black forestbamboo, caramel bamboo, ebony, rosewood, wenge and astriped effect called zebrawood, among other shades suit-able for different wood types.

Think about lighting and traffic. Lighter-coloredstains will generally show the woods knots and whorls, and any dust or pet hairs on your cabinetry wont be as vis-ible as they would on darker stain. Even scratches on yourcabinets can be less evident. Darker stains will camouflagewoods natural imperfections or make knots less visible, butscratches, dust and pet hair will be more visible.

Complementthe other wood tones and designdetails in your home. If you already have wood furniture inthe room, youll want to select a wood stain color that com-plements your existing piece. Keep in mind that the woodflooring leading from your bedroom or hallway and leading

into your bathroom will play a big role in helping you seleyour cabinetry wood stain colors, so that the shades antones leading into your bathroom create a beautiful flow hues and wood details.

Decide between water-based and oil-based colstains. The experts at DIY Network say, There are seveadvantages to using water-based color stains. For one thin

they offer a range and intensity of colors that oil-based staicant begin to offer. For another, they can be used withothe need for ventilation, since they produce no dangerofumes, and cleanup is simple -- just soap and water.

The DIY Network experts say, Stains add color but doprotect wood, so some type of sealant must be used. Donuse polyurethane, though: It always adds a slight yellotint. Instead, use a water-based finish, which can be appliwith either a brush or an aerosol spray.

To help you get started considering wood finishes for yocustom bathroom remodel, review the Furniture Guilhelpful chart: http://thefurnitureguild.com/#finishes.

    Creating Interestand Impact

Wall decor is one of the in-

Gallery WallsOne of hottest looks in wall decor is

creating a gallery wall. They are easy todesign and can be changed as often ashomeowners want.

DecalsWall decals are also trendy for

kids and grown-ups, too. The decals, available in vinyl and Photo Tex fabric, are available in a variety of styles andcolors and can be changed out as oftenas needed.

Although most vinyl decals areremovable, they are, in most cases, notre-stickable, says Parikh-Crandall.Fabric decals can be removed andreapplied to the walls more than afew dozen times, making it perfect forfamilies on the move or for rentals.

Creating a FeelWall hangings help define a room

and separate spaces, too for example, designating a sitting area in a family roomr a small office in the corner of a kitchen.

Where you want to guide people to go

and what you want them to do in a space, the wall decor is a director of that, saysGorder, whos partnering with solarservice company Sunrun to talk aboutthe must-haves in designing a smart, stylish home, including home solar.

Creating contrast in the room canmaximize the effect of your wallhangings. Cool shades and low contrastcan be calming almost spa-like saysParikh-Crandall, who says high-contrastwall decor can make a space vibrant.

Be conscientious about the size ofwall hangings, too.

A huge piece of art in a small roomcan overwhelm and intimidate, saysParikh-Crandall, whereas a tiny artpiece on a big wall would barely makea difference.

PersonalizationThe easiest wall hangings to change

are pieces that are stand-alone, such asa mirror in a hallway or a frame at thetop of the stairs.

Established collections for example,a series of plates hung on a wall are

most likely to remain unchangedbecause its a larger job to redecorate.Still, wall hangings can be a very

personal thing.I tend to decorate with things that

are sentimental, an old ticket stub in

a frame, says Gorder, whose walls home are decorated with a shadow bfeaturing her grandmothers satchand vintage maps from schools.

Everything you put on the wbecomes a little precious once ithere, says Gorder. Its meaningfulyou have it on the wall.

AffordabilityYou dont have to spend a lot

money to have new wall decor.Wall hangings are an accessor

says Gorder. Sometimes the piecthat are the least expensive are tmost powerful.

Gallery walls, for example, fit abudget, says Michele, noting you cgo pricey using original artwork custom frames on the wall or budgfriendly decorating the wall with fl

market finds and Ikea frames to creayour unique look.Parikh-Crandall estimates that pric

for art prints and wall decals can ranfrom under $15 to up to $100.

During the fall and winter holiday season, your dining roomwill be an important gathering place for dinners, brunches

and cocktail parties. The dining room has experienced an evo-lution in remodeling popularity lately, thanks to breathtakingdesign projects shown on popular home decorating websiteHouzz, as well as Pinterest. No matter how large your diningroom, you can give it a makeover. Here are the top trends indining room remodeling projects:

    1) Add interesting lighting.Julia Buckingham Edel-mann of Buckingham Interiors + Design says, A chic diningroom is no longer defined by an opulent crystal chandelier;instead make a statement with a one-of-a-kind piece. Ex-amples include a trio of pendant lamps, a rustic wood roundholding frosted glass lights or a rainfall-like effect of crystals

surrounding lights. Unique lighting allows you to put yourthinking-outside-the-box skills to work and serve as a con-versation-starting focal point. Guests will appreciate your useof the unexpected to light their meal. Add your new choiceof lighting fixture above the dining room table. With portraitlights on the walls, and perhaps uplighting placed behind pot-ted trees, the easy task of installing a dimmer switch will give

you the option of different light intensity whenever you wis

    2) Choose a new paint palette.Jeanine Hays, AphroChic design blogger says, Move over white walls; 2014 well be seeing rooms with a lot more drama and glam

our. Dining room walls might finally get a makeover frotheir boring beige hue to stand out in deep navy blue, whistyle blogger Mark D. Sikes says is a big trend for 2014. While navy blue can sometimes look a bit countgleaming metal fixtures and accessories (also a big trend) cate more of a formal, modern and stylish look. Other popushades for dining rooms include cranberry and eggplant warmer tones, and, if youd still prefer a neutral shade, slagray and chocolate brown are topping the trends.

    3) Chair rails and molding.Adding new chair raand molding to the dining room adds an upscale finishi

touch to the room, and may hide those less-than-perfect palines where the ceiling meets the wall. A chair rail also invithe trend of having one paint color above the rail and anothcolor or wide paint color stripes below for creative flair.youre doing the project yourself, buy extra lengths of woto allow for some inevitable miscuts and wood splits. 4) Knock out a wall. According to Realtor Magazinesrecent Cost vs. Value Report, the average return on invest-ment for home remodel projects is 66.1 percent, and creatingan open floor plan is one of the most requested features bynew homebuyers. Even if you wont put your house on themarket any time soon, you may still want that open, airy ar-rangement.

    5) Refresh with trendy furniture and accesso-

ries. Dining rooms have gotten more eclectic, which meansyoure not limited to the all-matching dining room chairs. Now a trend is to mix up chairs and benches or alternate chairfabrics and print patterns, place grander chairs at the heads ofthe table, and more creative pairings. A big trend is the rusticlook, placing a rough-hewn wood table at the center of theroom for a relaxed vibe in an otherwise formal dining room, creating an inviting gathering place. Alternatively, to add someglam styling to your dining room, think mirrors. Not just mir-rors hung on the walls although an oversize, ornate mirrorinstantly adds opulence to your dining room but mirroredbuffets or sideboards add drama to the room, especially when

you place silver accessories such as candelabras and art piecesminimally on your dining room furniture. Supersize artworkis also a trend, and home stylists say that large artwork may behung on the walls or even leaned against a wall.

Wallpaper can be an efficient and effective way to spruceup a house without taking up any room. Wall coverings

have been around for hundreds of years, but admirationwaxes and wanes with each decade. It seems that consis-

have been more conducive to the application of paper thancontemporary or Santa Fe-style homes. Other types of walltreatments have gained a foothold out West; treatments

such as Venetian plaster, faux and decorative finishes. I have

witnessed these phases with curiosity.Back in the 1970s when I started my design career, Mylarpatterns were hot. These included shiny geometric patterns

that were printed in silver, gold and copper metallic paint.Papers were bold and intended to deliver a big punch! Of-ten just one wall received these strong designs -- that was

all that a room could stand. We used papers like this in

commercial situations and also in homes. It was also an ewhen photographic murals were considered the rage anreplaced the paper landscape murals of the 1930s or 1940

As wallpaper is printed with current color schemes, the material might become dated more quickly. Wallpaper

books stay in print for several years at a time, but you couldfind it difficult to replace a paper originally printed 25 yearsago. It may become necessary to change your entire colorscheme or select a neutral pattern instead if you dont wantto change upholstery.

Warm weather, continued care and robust plants haveyielded a bounty of beautiful, fresh vegetables - and person-al satisfaction - from your garden this season. As the weath-er cools and fall approaches, it is not time to hang up yourhat, gloves and trowel for the year. Autumn provides opti-mum weather and ample opportunity to keep growing andharvesting delicious, healthy produce well into the season.

Some gardeners assume that when fall arrives and kidsreturn to school, theyll have less time to garden, and mayexperience less success from their garden plots. But coolertemperatures and fall conditions can actually make garden-

ing easier and more enjoyable. Many of falls best-producingvegetables are also colorful, making them great additions toflower beds and containers.

If you loved summer gardening, you can keep your gar-den growing right through fall. Heres how to make the mostof fall season gardening:

Size up the soilMost vegetable plants require full sun for six or more

hours a day, and because fall provides a bit less sunlightthan summer, you may need to relocate your plot to makethe most of shorter days. If moving your garden isnt an op-

tion, you can still take full advantage of sunshine by plant-ing veggies in containers or by creating a raised bed in asunny spot.

If youll be reusing your summer garden plot, removeany leftover debris. Dont forget to pull up weeds beforethey go to seed. Fluff any compacted soil with a garden fork.Next, test the soil to see if any amendments are needed.Even if your soil is in good shape, adding a 2-inch layer ofbagged compost or a balanced, natural fertilizer like BonniePlant Food can give plants a boost.

Be prepared for frost. Keep materials on hand to protectplants when frost threatens, such as floating row cover, acold frame or a cloche. On frosty, cold nights, move con-

tainer plants to a protected spot. Not sure when frost willarrive in your area? Check out the USDA frost map on theBonnie Plants website.

Pick your plantsWhile crops like strawberries and tomatoes have faded

to sweet summer memories, many plants thrive in fall. ensure a successful harvest, its important to pick the rigplants and give yourself a jump start by using transplanrather than starting off with seeds. Planting six-week-otransplants ensures youll have the best opportunity to taadvantage of falls shorter season, and youll harvest soonthan if you plant from seed.

Producers like Bonnie Plants provide garden retailewith transplants intended to grow well during the specigrowing season and are suited for your geographic regioSeasonally appropriate transplants ensure youll have greer success in your garden. An added bonus of fall plantingthat many cool crops are also packed with nutrition and aamong the healthiest vegetables you can eat.

When the leaves have turned color and are beginning tofall off the trees, it is time to prepare your garden to ensurea healthy yard next year.

Start winterizing your garden by removing the dead plantremnants from this years garden. Dig up all of the plants, in-cluding their root systems and either remove them entirelyor pile them on top of the garden.

Ideally, it is best to remove them and to put them in a

compost pile. Leaving old crop debris creates a haven forrodents and insects. Also, if the plants are diseased, it is im-portant to remove them from the garden to prevent nextyears garden from becoming infected as well.

If you decide to leave the plant remnants in the garden, dry them out and till them into the soil in late fall or earlyspring with some of the fallen leaves from your trees. By till-ing the fallen leaves into the soil in the fall, your yard willabsorb some nutrients. Leaving them on top of the gardenand waiting until spring to till them in retards the absorp-tion of the nutrients and delays the warming of the gardensoil in the spring.

Do not put fertilizer on your garden in the fall. It is bad

for the environment. and it is a waste of your money. With-out the garden plants there is nothing to absorb the fertil-izer. Consequently it washes away causing harm to creeksand wetlands. Save your money and apply the fertilizer inthe springtime.

If you are inclined to add a chemical to your garden in

the fall time, check the pH level of your soil and see if yshould add lime or sulfur. Fall is an excellent time of tyear to add these chemicals. Simply spread them on the gden soil and till.

Tilling your garden in the fall time is helpful in seve

other ways. It helps destroy any insect larvae in the soAlso the thawing and freezing of the soil that occurs durithe winter and spring breaks down dirt clogs and ensuresmoother soil for planting in the springtime.

Planting rye grass or another cover crop is a good idto prevent erosion and improve your gardens soil. Simpbroadcast it and rake it into the soil per the manufacturerecommended levels. However, if you do decide to plaa cover crop, you should do it earlier in the autumn seson, typically before the leaves begin to fall off the trees. spring, till the cover crop over about one or two weeks bfore you plan to plant so that the cover crop plant materhas time to decompose.

With these few garden winterizing tips, your garden wbe prepared for another great planting in the spring.
