Step 1 Decide where to collect!

You can hold your collection almost anywhere as long as you’ve asked permission. It’s best to choose a place where lots of people will pass your bucket. Here are just a few suggestions.

At work – Ask colleagues to put spare change into your bucket at lunchtime or to give up their morning coffee and donate the money to Breast Cancer Care.

School – Collect at the school gates from parents and teachers. Try to advertise in advance.

Shopping centres – Particularly at weekends or during late night shopping. Check with the manager first.

Half-time collection – If you belong to a sports club ask if you can collect at the game or afterwards in the clubhouse.

Your local theatre – Particularly if a member of the cast is willing to encourage donations from the audience.

Your local pub – Choose the busiest night of the week, and ask permission from the manager.

Do it on campus – If you’re at university, get a group of friends together and collect on campus or at your union. Check with your volunteering office first.

Local shops – Collections at your local food or clothes shop can work well. Speak to the customer services department about available dates.

Step 2 Get people together!

Friends, family and colleaguesStart by asking them to help out with your collection.

Use social media to spread the word Tweet about the Bucket Brigade using the hashtag #bucketbrigade or post about it on your Facebook wall.

Posters in your local area Download and personalise posters from our website. Use them to promote your collection or ask people to volunteer.

Local clubs Guides, Army Cadets or Rotary Clubs are often a great source of volunteers.

Every £100 raised could pay for four calls to our Helpline so people facing breast cancer can get the support and information they need.

Step 3 Watch your buckets fill up with donations!

It’s important to stand out in a positive way. When collecting smile, be friendly and make eye contact with people. Greet people and let them know that you are collecting for Breast Cancer Care.

Dress for the occasion! Comfortable shoes help when standing for a long time. Dress warmly if your collection is taking place outside.

You could organise a musical or dance performance at your collection, with permission from the venue, to encourage people to stop and make a donation.

Remember to say thank you! Every donation will help us support more people with breast cancer.

If you are asked a question about our work and you don’t know the answer you can signpost people to our website www.breastcancercare.org.uk or our Helpline (0808 800 6000).

Last but not least, have fun!

Step 4 Pay in your donations!

Be security conscious when transporting cash. If possible put collecting buckets in unmarked bags or use a wheeled suitcase to disguise heavy loads.

Where possible drive to the collection and park nearby or get someone to give you a lift. Avoid public transport, where you will be more vulnerable.

Count the money in a safe location, such as your home, and have two people there.

Please return the funds to us within two weeks of your collection.

You can pay in your donations:

online at www.breastcancercare.org.uk/bucket

by sending us a cheque along with your completed money return form

into a HSBC bank – contact your local fundraising team to request a paying-in slip.
