What are some hobbies you have? I love playing tennis and frisbee. I’ve played tennis my whole life and only just picked up a frisbee this year.

What do you enjoy most about your job? The interaction with different people every day. The encounters you face vary every day, and I find that opposing the typical monotonous dialogue of an office job. I enjoy every new project the registration specialists have for us.

What is the most rewarding experience you have had and why? Traveling to the Standing Rock reservation for the Dakota Access Pipeline Protest. It was important for me to return back to the Oglala Country for my elders as well as standing up for the sanctity of tribal sovereignty and treaties. This was very rewarding for me because it brought me closer to my indigenous culture, considering I grew up in Atlanta. I spent two weeks in a tent during freezing weather while being surrounded by warm spirits, elders and protectors.

What is your favorite inspirational quote and who said it? “If you know your WHY, you can endure any HOW” -Author UnknownThis is my favorite because we all reach a point in our life where we don’t know what we’re doing, where we’re going and how we’re going to do it. This quote inspires you to remember that as long as you know your purpose and passions, you have answered why you are doing what you’re doing. And when you know your WHY, you will always find a way to accomplish your goals and dreams and find your HOW.

What is your favorite season and why? Fall is my favorite season because of all the earth tone colors that are brought to life. I love dark and chilly days being brightened by the vivid orange and red leaves everywhere.

UFM has an exceptional and passionate group of professionals doing great work, and I was fortunate to work with so many unique, fun and dedicated people. UFM has a promising future ahead, preparing to celebrate 50 years serving the community, with many good volunteers and teachers surrounding its scope of work. As an educator, I wholeheartedly believe in the impact this organization has on students and the community alike.”

Book Club

On June 28, staff met to discuss one of the 2016-17 Book Club selections, "Lunchmeat & Life Lessons." A light lunch was provided by book club committee members Kevin Chrisjohn, Laura Widenor, Trina McCarty, Chuck Thorpe and Ashley Noll.

Participants discussed the 28 “words of wisdom” quotes from the book focusing on what might apply most to our roles at K-State

in our respective organizations. There was agreement that the most important message was one of listening to, caring about and having compassion for our clients, colleagues and fellow man (or woman!). Copies of the book are still available for anyone wishing to check out a copy; contact Chuck Thorpe at [email protected].
